... TINY MUSIC MAKERS: Pt 2: The Microsoft Sound
Ten years ago, Microsoft spent $300m launching Windows 95 (just under $3 per copy sold). A tiny slice of that money went to Brian Eno, who recorded the startup sound on a handful of ageing synths in his studio.
There are various different versions of 'The Microsoft Sound'. I'm pretty sure that this is the one (it sounds Eno-ish with delayed pianos). Please tell me if I'm wrong.
Brian Eno is proper arty. He once urinated in Marcel Duchamp's 'Fountain'
Brian Eno has produced six U2 albums, which have sold 70 million copies worldwide. Windows 95 sold 110 million copies in just two years.
Brian told XFM that he was paid $35,000 for the sound.
In 2001, MS-hater post-rock band Trans Am released Let's Take The Fresh Step Together [iTunes Link] , which is the Microsoft Sound timestretched to 51 seconds.

"artist as curator". An artist is now a curator. An artist is now much more seen as a connector of things, a person who scans the enormous field of possible places for artistic attention, and says, What I am going to do is draw your attention to this sequence of things. If you read art history up until 25 or 30 years ago, you'd find there was this supposition of succession: from Verrocchio, through Giotto, Primaticcio, Titian, and so on, as if a crown passes down through the generations. But in the 20th century, instead of that straight kingly line, there's suddenly a broad field of things that get called art, including vernacular things, things from other cultures, things using new technologies like photo and film. It's difficult to make any simple linear connection through them.

"I grew up as a David Byrne fan. I admired his work with Talking Heads and those records then led me to 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts' where I discovered Brian Eno's work. The collaboration between Byrne and Eno inspired me to think outside the box and opened my head up to new musical and most importantly non-musical experiences." Brian Eno David Byrne My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts came out in 1981. The Big Here and Long Now by Brian Eno It was 1978. I was new to New York. A rich acquaintance had invited me to a housewarming party, and, as my cabdriver wound his way down increasingly potholed and dingy streets, I began wondering whether he’d got the address right. Finally he stopped at the doorway of a gloomy, unwelcoming industrial building. Two winos were crumpled on the steps, oblivious. There was no other sign of life in the whole street. "I think you may have made a mistake", I ventured. But he hadn’t. My friend’s voice called "Top Floor!" when I rang the bell, and I thought – knowing her sense of humour – "Oh – this is going to be some kind of joke!" I was all ready to laugh. The elevator creaked and clanked slowly upwards, and I stepped out - into a multi-million dollar palace. The contrast with the rest of the building and the street outside couldn’t have been starker. I just didn’t understand. Why would anyone spend so much money building a place like that in a neighbourhood like this? Later I got into conversation with the hostess. "Do you like it here?" I asked. "It’s the best place I’ve ever lived", she replied. "But I mean, you know, is it an interesting neighbourhood?" "Oh – the neighbourhood? Well…that’s outside!" she laughed. The incident stuck in my mind. How could you live so blind to your surroundings? How could you not think of ‘where I live’ as including at least some of the space outside your four walls, some of the bits you couldn’t lock up behind you? I felt this was something particular to New York: I called it "The Small Here". I realised that, like most Europeans, I was used to living in a bigger Here.

In music there are superstars and there are legends; and the two are not always the same thing. Take, for example, Brian Eno. With a career that spans more than 30 years, Brian Eno has created the sound of several superstar acts such as Devo and Talking Heads. He's created entire new genres of music and has become a major influence of several hundred modern rock stalwarts such as David Bowie and U2. Yet at 57 years old, Brian Eno remains the prototypical "indie" musician. People "in the know" know Eno, that's why you should too. - The early '70s glam-rock band probably most famous today for the eighties hit "Love is the Drug" spawned two major forces in music; Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno. The two men had very different ideas about the direction of the band, leading Eno to quit after only the second Roxy release, "For your Pleasure," in 1973.

Meanwhile, Brian Eno becomes a political advisor
By Bruce Sterling Link: Brian Eno (or "Eno" as friends call him) has not always chosen his colleagues wisely. U2, Coldplay, Paul Simon: any discerning record shop would shelve these artistes under "crock music", yet Mr Eno (or "Brian" as some Americans call him) has worked with them all. (((What the hell kind of narrative hook is THAT?! Those are some of the biggest iconic musicians of the 20th century, not to mention that U2 are so rich even Gates takes them seriously.))) "His latest collaborator is perhaps the most head-scratching of all. Nick Clegg, the Lib Dems' new leader and one of Westminster's jeunesse dor©e, has appointed him his adviser on youth affairs. It is not unusual for a politician to cadge some cred from a popstar. (((Or marry one.))) Oasis' Noel Gallagher visited Tony Blair at No 10, and Tony Hadley (yes, the horsey-looking one out of Spandau Ballet) has gone so far as to meet Michael Howard. In this instance, however, the parliamentarian is 20 years younger than the pop musician, who becomes eligible this year for a free bus pass. (((That's because Eno is a wise old man... nay a very guru.))) The precise nature of Mr Eno's role is yet to be disclosed (the pop star "has some thoughts" is as far as Mr Clegg's spokesperson was willing to venture). Still, the former Roxy Musician is bound to have some interesting ideas....(((Boy, I'll say.)))
