Executive summary: Ambient music pioneer One of the most widely-known musicians to have successfully positioned themselves within both the mainstream and the avant-garde fields, Brian Peter George St. Baptiste de la Salle Eno was of course decended from several generations of postmen, but was deflected from the family vocation (aside from two holiday seasons) by the insidious influence of American doo-wop, introduced into their rural, Suffolk County home by his older sister's U.S. Air Force boyfriends. The damage was subsequently made irrevocable by attendance at art schools in Ipswitch and Winchester, where he was introduced to the work of British avant-garde composers Cornelius Cardew and John Tilbury (both participants (at different times) in the improvisational ensemble AMM ), as well as American insigators such as

While an art student in the late 1960s, Eno began experimenting with electronic music, and in 1971 he joined the fledgling band Roxy Music as keyboardist and technical adviser. A rivalry with singer Bryan Ferry led Eno to leave the group in 1973, whereupon he launched a solo career. No Pussyfooting Here Come the Warm Jets (1973), was soon followed by the proto- punk Discrete Music Music for Films (1978), and Music for Airports (1979) exemplified this approach. During this period Eno also began producing albums for other artists, and his experimental approach to music making was well suited to such alternative performers as Devo , Ultravox, and David Bowie (especially on Talking Heads and Remain in Light Unforgettable Fire (1984) and The Joshua Tree Brian Eno Link to this article and share the full text with the readers of your Web site or blog-post.

Unraveling Beliefs If I were an average white woman living in the United States in 1850, I would already have been dead for 10 years. Not an ideal position from which to contemplate optimism about the future, you say. But consider this: In the snap of 150 years, the life expectancy of this very group catapulted from a dismal 40 to a respectable 80 years. Given my own privileges, this means that I will write 30 more responses to the yearly Edge question. Yippee.
Many others in this volume will speak about specific human accomplishments that are legitimate grounds for optimism. I am inclined to focus on an aspect of the mind because it, I believe, is the font of the many possibilities that give us optimism.
What gives me particular optimism about the future is the ability of humans everywhere to go against the grain of their own beliefs that are familiar, that feel natural and right, and that appear to be fundamentally true. What makes me optimistic is the possibility that we can (and do) unravel the contents of traditional beliefs and even the process by which they were constructed.

Brian Eno: A Sandbox In Alphaville
By Lester Bangs
(from August 2003)
What happens when you have one of the most influential music scribes cover on one of the most influential producer/musician/philosophers? Take a great writer and a great subject and you will easily have a great article. Well, maybe... But in this case, yes. Expanding on an article he'd written for Musician magazine, Lester Bangs decided to expand and expound on the curious subject that is art-rock legend Brian Eno. Including not just an overview of Eno's life and recording career, Bangs did extensive interviews with Eno also, accompanying him to shows and recording sessions. This work was meant to be a chapter in a book mirroring AB Spellman's Four Lives In the Bebop Business , focusing on other artists such as Marianne Faithful, Danny Fields and Screamin' Jay Hawkins. The tentative title for the book was Beyond the Law: Four Rock 'n' Roll Extremists Sadly, the book itself was never completed though the chapter on Eno was finished around 1979/1980. Never published until now (though pieces of it appeared in a Musician article he did in '79), this through examination of Eno's work during the '70's is a (dare I say) lost treasure that shouldn't be buried or lost. This occasion comes on the heels of the publication of a second anthology of Bang's work: Main Lines, Blood Feasts, and Bad Taste: A Lester Bangs Reader

Self-described "nonmusician" and studio experimentalist Brian Eno has greatly influenced an encyclopedia of styles - from art rock to punk to world music to techno. A founding member of Roxy Music, Brian Eno went on to work as a solo artist and a producer/collaborator with U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Robert Fripp, and others. His series of ambient music records (by himself and with such composers as Jon Hassell, Harold Budd, and Laraaji) feature an atmospheric instrumental sound that found expression in both New Age and minimalist work. An aesthetic breakthrough, his tape-delay system, developed for Robert Fripp as “Frippertronics,” insisted on the conscious use of recording technology as a method of composition and paved the way for the “sampling” used extensively in rap and techno.
Roxy Music and For Your Pleasure , he departed in 1973 due to friction with songwriter Bryan Ferry.
After No Pussyfooting (with Robert Fripp), Eno put out two records of free-associative, noisily inventive songs -
