He began his career as a dancer, making his film debut in 1935's "Broadway Melody of 1936" and starring in various screen musicals including 1938's "My Lucky Star".
Ebsen was originally cast as the "Tin Man" in the 1938 classic The Wizard of Oz. He recorded all his songs, went through all the rehearsals, and started filming with the rest of the cast. He was rushed to the hospital nine days after filming began, when his lungs seized after a week of inhaling aluminum dust from the dangerously experimental "tin" makeup. While Ebsen was in the hospital for two weeks, recovering from a near-fatal allergic reaction to the dust, he was silently replaced by Jack Haley. Haley didn't run the same risk because the makeup was changed in the meantime from a dust to a paste. Ebsen's career may have been damaged by losing the "Wizard of Oz" part; he appeared only in minor Westerns for many years after this incident. From 1941 to 1946 he served as a lieutenant in the United States Coast Guard.
Ebsen's work in television started as the sidekick to Fess Parker in the Davy Crockett series, but he became famous in 1962 when he starred as Jed Clampett in the television show The Beverly Hillbillies. The show depicted a stereotypical hillbilly family from the Ozarks getting rich on oil and moving to a stereotypical rich neighborhood in Beverly Hills.

Considine Jr.; MGM; 1935)
"Strictly for those who love showbiz nostalgia." Reviewed by Dennis Schwartz A lively musical-comedy directed by Roy Del Ruth ("Born to Dance"/"It Happened on Fifth Avenue"/"The West Point Story"), with a screenplay by Jack McGowan and Sid Silvers that was based on a story by Moss Hart (it was the first time a musical was nominated for an Oscar). There are three outstanding numbers: ‘Broadway Rhythm' with Francis Langford's voice dubbed for Eleanor Powell, ‘I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' sung by Robert Taylor and June Knight and ‘You are My Lucky Star' also with Francis Langford's voice dubbed for Eleanor Powell. Other songs include: 'On a Sunday Afternoon,' 'Sing Before Breakfast' and 'All I Do Is Dream of You.' Four songs from the movie would be repeated in Singin' in the Rain (1951). Jack Benny is cast against type as a nasty Walter Winchell type gossip columnist. This is the second of four Broadway Melody musicals produced by MGM and many consider it the best. Though this one is strictly for those who love showbiz nostalgia.

A dancer who performed with his sister in films, the former Christian Rudolph Ebsen traded taps with young Shirley Temple and moved on to dramatic work in such films as "Breakfast at Tiffany's" . (Ebsen's best-known role that never materialized was as the Tin Man in the classic "The Wizard of Oz" . An allergic reaction to the aluminum makeup caused Ebsen to drop out after ten days of filming; Jack Haley replaced him.)

Buddy Ebsen
Not many people give up pre-med for tap dancing or get a job in a Broadway musical the first day they arrive in New York City. But Buddy Ebsen's career became one of the most successful and colorful in the entertainment industry. "His mentors were his vaudevillian parents, his inspiration was his sister and dancing partner, Vilma, and among his fans are you and I," says his old friend Bob Hope. Today's swimmers probably know Buddy Ebsen best as the Beverly Hillbillies ' Jed Clampett or TV's detective Barnaby Jones , but few know Buddy to be a former competitive swimmer.
