Hollywood's favourite hillbilly Buddy Ebsen and his famous Beverly Hillbillies screen character, Jed Clampett, both left their home towns to enjoy good fortune on the golden California coast. Though famous for playing Jed and detective Barnaby Jones, Ebsen was also a celebrated painter and writer. Born in 1908 and based in Florida from the age of 12, Ebsen preferred the environs of the school boxing ring to his father's dancing studio, until he watched the Dixie Four performing and wanted to emulate them. His first love was medicine but, when the money ran out, he abandoned medical school and started dancing professionally. Making whoopee: Buddy Ebsen on stage With his sister Vilma, Ebsen moved to New York in 1928, where they trod the boards together. Once of their first appearances was in the Ziegfeld production Whoopee.

DM) I understand that you've re-released a CD of songs that you recorded?
BE) Over the years in show business I've written some songs like my own version of "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" which is on the CD. "Long Talk With That Boy " turned out to be something people liked. "Back Home USA" is a wonderful song about a belief in people and the country. "Howdy" is a very lovely song, and "Angelica" is a song I wrote for my granddaughter. Well, there's all songs like that. They're all very entertaining songs that lasted over 15 years.
DM) Can you tell me more about the song, "Spaceship" which you said at one point can also apply to the events of today?

THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES U.S. Situation Comedy The Beverly Hillbillies (1962-71, CBS) was the brainchild of Paul Henning, the cracker-barrel surrealist also responsible for Petticoat Junction The Real McCoys , and, notably, Green Acres . Certainly the most popular sitcom in television history, and quite possibly the most successful network series ever, it ran for over 200 episodes, clocking in as the top-rated show of its premier season, and remaining in the top ten throughout its nine-year tenure. Individual episodes almost always placed in the Nielsen Top 20, and on occasion rivaled the ratings of Super Bowls. As explained in the opening montage and cadenced theme song, Jed Clampett (Buddy Ebsen) is an Ozarks mountaineer who, through epic fortuity and sheer ineptitude rather than the Protestant work ethic, falls into unfathomable wealth with the discovery of oil beneath his worthless Arcadian scrub oak. When a roving petrochemical concern gets wind, they buy him out for $25 million, whereupon town sophisticate Cousin Pearl (Bea Benaderet) convinces him fabled Beverly Hills might provide: (a) a suitable beau for his daughter Elly May (Donna Douglas) and (b) career opportunities for his wayward nephew Jethro Bodine (Max Baer, Jr.). Claim: Buddy Ebsen was slated to play the Tin Woodman in the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz, but he had to be replaced after the aluminum makeup used with his costume made him gravely ill.
    Status: True.
    Origins:
Actually, the person first cast to play the Tin Woodman was Ray Bolger. Buddy Ebsen was originally intended for the role of the Scarecrow, but Ray Bolger eventually managed to convince MGM to allow him to swap parts with Ebsen (not, as is often claimed, because a clause in Bolger's contract stipulated that he could play the part of the Scarecrow if MGM ever made The Wizard of Oz
MGM initially had no idea exactly how to costume Ebsen for his role. They tried a variety of materials for his clothing (real tin, silver paper, cardboard covered with silver cloth) and makeup before finally settling on aluminum dust (applied over clown white) for the latter. When The Wizard of Oz began principal photography on 12 October 1938, Ebsen had finished all his costume and makeup tests, recorded his songs for the film soundtrack, and completed four weeks of rehearsal. Nine days later, he was rushed to the hospital and placed in an oxygen tent when his lungs failed. As Ebsen described the onset of symptoms in his autobiography:
