While attending the University of Minnesota, Dylan traded his electric guitar for an acoustic and began to pattern himself after hard-traveling folksingers of the previous generation, such as his mentor Woody Guthrie John Lee Hooker . After playing harmonica on a session for folksinger Carolyn Hester, Dylan was signed by producer John Hammond to a contract with Columbia Records. Except for a brief hiatus in the early Seventies, Dylan has recorded for and remained with the label since 1961. the Beatles began conquering young America, the articulate and challenging Dylan occupied the minds of a slightly older set. The fruits of those labors were repeatedly bootlegged and finally saw legitimate release in 1975 as The Basement Tapes John Wesley Harding , a folk-country album that found Dylan penning inscrutable parables about historical characters and outlaws as a metaphorical means of deflating the audience-hero relationship.

Instead, it's the same damn songs they've been feeding us over and over for 40 years. (There was originally some talk about how the tracklisting would be determined by the votes of fans; that doesn't seem to have happened.) We don't even get that not-bad new Mark Ronson remix of "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)". DYLAN is just his brittle canon of "classics," undigested and unreconsidered, with stuff from his lesser records thrown in to fill it out.

Dylan's contribution is first and foremost as a lyricist. Able to communicate tenderness, bitterness, melancholy, anger, detachment, even confusion - he brought a range of emotional expression never before seen in popular music. Most of his songs are built on standard rock or folk chord changes and simple but effective melodies, designed to deliver the payload: his words. Dylan's Never-Ending Tour has been going on since 1990, and I finally caught it and wrote a review on our concert review page . He was born with a snake above his fist while a hurricane was blowing. You must know that. Know the fact, or the music, or the truth inside the mythology, spun from roots by his rough magic into cloth of gold, into songs that are the shifting, stormy center of American popular music in the second part of the very century when the music was invented. ... Oprah Winfrey Categories Leaders/Revol. Builders/Titans Scientists/Thinkers Heroes/Icons Bob Dylan couldn't wait for the music to change. He couldn't be only part of the change. He was the change itself. The snake and the hurricane. And you do know that. If you've been listening only in passing, you know, among other things, that the answer's blowin' in the wind, the times they are achangin', everybody must get stoned, they're selling postcards of the hanging, and that to live outside the law you must be honest. Later, listening more closely, you found out that we're goin' all the way till the wheels fall off and burn, that dignity's never been photographed, and that no one plays the blues like Blind Willie McTell. Those are legends and home truths, passed along in song, that became part of a cultural vocabulary and an ongoing American myth. Hundreds of songs; more than 500 and counting. Forty-three albums; more than 57 million copies sold. A series of dreams about America as it once and never was. It was folk music, deep within its core, from the mountains and the delta and the blacktop of Highway 61. Rhythm and blues, too, and juke-joint rock 'n' roll, and hymns from backwoods churches and gospel shouts from riverside baptisms. He put all that together, and found words to match it.

(CBS) This segment originally aired Dec. 5, 2004. There is no living musician who has been more influential than Bob Dylan.
Over a 43-year career, his distinctive twang and poetic lyrics have produced some of the most memorable songs ever written. In the '60s, his songs of protest and turmoil spoke to an entire generation.
While his life has been the subject of endless interpretation, Dylan has been largely silent. At 63, he wrote a memoir called "Chronicles, Volume One." Correspondent Ed Bradley got to sit down with this music legend in his first television interview in nearly 20 years.
