Deanna Durbi n (Edna Mae Durbin) was born on December 4, 1921, in Winnipeg, Canada, to English immigrant parents. She is the most popular actress and singer in Hollywood films of the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1935, young Edna signed a contract with MGM Studios and in 1936 made a Tabloid Musical film with Judy Garland called EVERY SUNDAY.
Universal Studios saw the potential of Deanna Durbin and her amazing voice so she was signed up to make her first feature-length film in 1936 called THREE SMART GIRLS. The huge success of her movies helped save the studio from financial ruin. Because of her outstanding performances on the screen, she received a special Academy Juvenile Award. And such was Deanna's fame and popularity she became the highest paid actress in the world.
Deanna is best known for her singing voice - a voice described variously as light but full, sweet, unaffected and artless. With the technical skill and vocal range of a legitimate lyric soprano, she performed everything from popular standards to operatic arias. No doubt Deanna could of been an opera star if she chose to go in that direction. She was also considered by many as the most beautiful and best dressed woman in the world.
She retired from public life in 1950, after her marriage to Charles David, who had directed her in LADY ON A TRAIN. They made their home near Paris with Deanna vowing that she would never go back to show business. Since then she has resisted numerous offers to perform on the stage and screen.

W hen you think of child stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, you may think of Shirley Temple, Judy Garland or Mickey Rooney. How about Deanna Durbin? A movie star so bright she couldn't be filmed in colour more than once. Born Edna Mae Durbin in Winnipeg, December 4, 1921, she lived most of her life in Los Angeles. Her parents, who were originally British, moved there in 1922 because of her father's health. She was an average little girl growing up in the entertainment capital of the world. How could Judy Garland at the keyboard and Deanna Durbin in a publicity still from the short film, Every Sunday. she not wind up in the business? In 1932, she began taking singing lessons and originally hoped to have a career as an opera singer. Her extraordinary voice drew immediate attention, and after a number of radio performances, Durbin was introduced to agent Jack Sherrill, who signed her immediately to Metro Goldwyn Mayer. Shortly afterwards she was given an audition. It turned out to be a screen test in the form of a short film. Every Sunday , as it was titled, had a running time of a mere 11 minutes. It could have been the most important 11 minutes in MGM's history, but it didn't turn out that way. Paired with Durbin was another young singer with high hopes, Judy Garland. The story goes that when MGM boss Louis B. Mayer saw the results, he said something along the lines of "drop the fat one" meaning Garland. But his command was somehow misunderstood, and Durbin wasn't offered a contract at the legendary studio. Judy Garland was instead. She would go on to spend her entire career at MGM making some of the greatest films of that era including, of course

Deanna Durbin began her screen career in 1935 in an MGM movie entitled "Every Sunday" in which she starred opposite Judy Garland. When MGM decided to drop Deanna following the film, Universal Pictures snapped her up and were literally saved from financial ruin when her first feature-length movie, "Three Smart Girls", was an overnight box office success.
She made twenty-one movies with Universal , rising to become Hollywood's most highly paid female star of the period before retiring at the age of 28 to concentrate on her family and marriage to French director Charles Henri David.
Her charm, good looks and beautiful soprano voice have ensured that her records and movies continue to be appreciated, with new audiences rediscovering her as a result of repeat showings of her movies on television channels around the world.
