Executive summary: The Patty Duke Show Patty Duke is known to generations as the preternaturally perky identical cousins on The Patty Duke Show . She has played both Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan in 1962 and 1979 film adaptations of The Miracle Worker . She remains a familiar presence on television, and has made more "Lifetime Channel" movies than any other actor. Duke was born into a troubled family, with parents who had vicious, violent arguments. Her father, an alcoholic, seemed to her to always be smiling, but when she was six her mother kicked him out, and he disappeared from her life. Duke's mother, who suffered from depression and had violent episodes, began working at odd jobs to support her three children. When her brother Raymond became interested in acting, a couple who managed young actors asked him if he knew of a young girl who could play the part of his sister. Duke was a natural for the part, and the managers quickly lost interest in Ray and began to concentrate exclusively on Anna. These managers were Ethel and John Ross. They took Duke into their home, and Ethel Ross told her, "Anna Marie is dead. You're Patty now". As "Patty Duke", she got small parts in television commercials and soap operas, but her charm and willingness to please soon got her larger roles. Her first screen appearance was a brief role in

    Patty Duke: Exceptional Person
Patty Duke is an actress. She has won three Emmy Awards for made-for-television movies. In 1965, at the age of 17, Patty became the youngest person to win an Academy Award in a regular category (Best Supporting Actress) for her role as Helen Keller in the motion-picture version of The Miracle Worker. At the age of 13, Patty starred as Helen Keller in William Gibson's play The Miracle Worker.
As part of Patty's plan to win the Helen Keller role in the play, Patty would practice at being a person with a visual impairment. She would blindfold herself and practice eating, dressing, and moving around. Patty also learned the manual sign language alphabet in preparation for her audition. It was her determination and practice that won her the role as Helen Keller.
Although successful as an actress, Patty was a very unhappy person. In 1982 Patty was finally diagnosed as having a manic-depressive disorder. Manic depression is a disease caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Patty continues to cope with this disability with medication. The medicine is not a cure but makes the symptoms of manic depression easier to control. Patty is still an actress, but also tours the country as a disability advocate, giving talks and answering questions about manic depression and other mental illnesses.

Patty Duke in Indianapolis to Talk About Mental Illness
From Indiana's WISH TV - Channel 8 - by Debby Knox "Patty Duke is an Academy Award winning actress and best-selling author. She's also a person with a mental illness. Duke was in Indianapolis Thursday night. Patty Duke has made it her life work to talk openly about her battle, and victory over bipolar disease. Patty Duke was sigining copies of her book at an event sponsored by Eli Lilly and Company. But she's best known for her acting career. She won an Oscar at a young age for the portrayal of Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker. But even then, she was battling her own demons, bipolar disease, which wasn't diagnosed until she was in her 30's. "Once my diagnosis was made and confirmed and accepted by me, the medication that was begun in my case is lithium. It worked," Duke said."

    See More About:
by Marcia Purse Anna Marie Duke was born in New York into a troubled household. Her father was an alcoholic, her mother an undiagnosed manic depressive. The first six years of her life were shadowed by her parents' fighting; after her father was kicked out or walked out (reports vary), though, her mother's violent rages still made home a fearsome place. Her older brother Raymond's interest in acting brought the attention of managers John and Ethel Ross to the Duke family and, ultimately, it was young Anna who became their client. The Rosses recognized in 8-year-old Anna the talent that could make them wealthy, and they took over the child's life in an effort to capitalize on their find. It was the Rosses who changed her name, telling her, "Anna Marie is dead. You're Patty now."
