Section 1 - So what are these "hash coffeeshops" anyway? Hash coffeeshops are a phenomenon just about unique to Amsterdam. (Which, by the way, is a fabulously pretty and laid-back city in its own right and well worth visiting even if you've never touched a spliff in your life.) Basically, they are cafes or bars that sell cannabis (hash, weed, grass, dope, gear, SOFT DRUGS) openly, albeit discreetly. (For legal matters, see section 2 below.) The existence of the coffeeshops dates from the mid-1970s when the Dutch government embarked on a policy of toleration of cannabis use. There are now around 300 coffeeshops in Amsterdam, though because the selling of cannabis remains unlicensed, no-one knows the exact number. This guide describes 20 of them. I didn't sample hash products from every one, but I did smoke in every one.

I will leave this website online until I have a new one to replace it with! I am an ecologist postdoc in the EEB dept. at Princeton University, in Steve Pacala's lab. My scientific interests and research are focused on plant community ecology. I take a quantitative approach, combining theory and modeling, with large amounts of data, via statistics. The aim is to build a realistic understanding of plant communities in order to attempt to answer interesting ecological questions, at the same time as producing tools that can be used to make quantiative predictions to guide management. I am currently focusing on fthe ecology of temperate forests, with the eventual aim of building a detailed, but rigorously tested and parameterized, forest gap model for simulating at continental, and decdadal to century, scales. The key component of this work and any work that aims to understand forest ecology is canopy structure. Jan 11 Dr. Drew Pinsky, my favorite of all television/radio doctors, is going on the attack, and his target is Dr. Phil McGraw. Dr. Phil famously tried to use Britney Spears’ emotional breakdown last week as a vehicle to boost his own show’s ratings. The Spears family requested that he meet privately with Britney. And while Dr. Phil did technically do that, he then issued multiple press releases about it, blabbed to Entertainment Tonight about Brit’s condition, and then said he was going to have the Spears parents on his show. He eventually had to retract that, and the Spears had to issue a statement explaining that they wanted Dr. Phil’s private – not public – help. By most accounts, Dr. Phil just yammered at Britney for fifteen minutes (not the hour long conversation he originally reported) while she packed her belongs to leave the hospital. Dr. Drew (who is a board-certified MD, an addiction-medicine specialist in full time practice, teaches at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, has been the host of radio’s Loveline since he was a med student in 1983, and is currently the host of VH1’s Celebrity Rehab) has called Dr. Phil out for his unprofessional behavior. [From PR-Insider Britney clearly needs a specialist, not a general TV-grade psychologist who’s out for their own benefit. And it seems pretty likely that she needs someone with a medical degree, as it seems possible that she has some sort of physical problem going on, whether it’s chemical or biological. Hopefully the biggest disservice Dr. Phil did was to his own career and not to Britney or her family. There’s been a lot of speculation that his actions may have caused an irreparable rift between the Spears.

MSNBC contributors It seems almost everyone has an opinion about Britney Spears’ fall from pop grace. “Loveline” host Dr. Drew Pinsky recently joined the chorus in an interview with Us Weekly . The addiction-medicine specialist shared his informed opinion on what’s wrong in Brit’s life and whether or not there’s still hope for the singer. “(Britney) is a drug addict,” Dr. Drew insisted. “It is an indisputable point.” To back up his claim, he told Us, “We know that she is a drug addict because she's been admitted to a treatment center. You can't be admitted unless you’ve met criteria for addiction.” When asked if Brit’s problems could be traced to attaining pop success at such an early age, Dr. Drew wouldn’t entertain the blame game. “Her mental health has almost nothing to do with her career.” But he does believe her mega-stardom makes it harder to help her.
