Romance is on fast track in 'Personal Best'
Email Print Text size By Tom Russo January 13, 2008 The rippling, fetishized musculature of Olympic athletes is ultimately only the second most impressive thing on display in "Personal Best" (1982). What's even more striking about writer-director Robert Towne's drama is how matter-of-factly it depicts the romantic relationship between eventual track rivals Chris Cahill (Mariel Hemingway) and Tory Skinner (real-life Olympian Patrice Donnelly). There's nothing sensationalistic or prurient at play in the women's involvement with each other. no going on and on about "taboos." Even when their hard-case coach (Scott Glenn) comes between them, it's not about the story taking an easy out, but rather introducing a valid, squirmy bit of dramatic complication. The film also holds up well visually, with deftly edited shots of runners at the starting blocks building terrific anticipation. A scene in which Hemingway and Donnelly race up a giant dune in slow-motion, with only their breathing and the scattering sand audible, is a clinic in sound design. Extras: Towne sits down for a commentary track with Glenn and castmate Kenny Moore, another Olympic vet. You're likely to ask, "Kenny who," given that his character is a minor player. But Towne explains that Moore was key to the production shooting at the Olympic trials. (The two would go on to co-write the Steve Prefontaine biopic "Without Limits.") Towne occasionally digresses when the material turns graphic, choosing Hemingway and Donnelly's big love scene to talk about how Hemingway was actually coached on the "Fosbury flop" by high jumper Dick Fosbury. Eventually, though, he gets around to noting that he took issue with a crew member's notion that the scene should have a cold design to reflect an inappropriateness about it. For Towne, the moment was all about innocence. (Warner, $19.97)

During the interview, he discussed his time working as a writer for World Wrestling Entertainment, bringing up last night's Smackdown angle featuring The Undertaker and Muhammad Hussan. O'Neal ran down the angle as Opie and Anthony hadn't seen it, mentioning the parental advisory at the start of last night's Smackdown. He then described the angle, comparing the masked men to being similar in appearance to terrorists on the "beheading videos" and Daivari "being carried out like a martyr." Opie and Anthony noted that they thought Vince McMahon had lost his mind. O'Neal noted that he wrote for the company and used to fly with Vince McMahon in his lear jet. O'Neal said there are several people you will meet in your life where you will "completely lose your manliness" and Vince McMahon is one of them. He says that he was at McMahon's house in Stamford during rewrites and was like a little girl when McMahon spoke to him because McMahon is a "powerful dude." He said Vince "is a cold dude."

Synopsis:
Based on the original novel from Robert Daly, "Personal Best" is the directorial debut of "Chinatown" Oscar winner Robert Towne. The film stars world-class athletes including Olympians Patrice Donnelly, Jodi Anderson, and Kenny Moore. Track star and hurdler, Chris and Tory meet at the 1976 Olympic trials and begin a lesbian affair. Tory then talks her coach, Terry, into allowing Chris to train with her under his guidance. Eventually, Terry convinces Chris to train for the pentathlon, creating a rivalry between the two women, leading to the end of their affair.

    Patrice T. Smith
    Patrice’s work with nonprofits began when she was 15 years old as a Summer Day Camp Counselor. From that experience she gained increasing responsibilities with the organization working her way to Program Director of the organization’s Female Youth Outreach Programs. Patrice’s passion for the nonprofit and philanthropic community stems from her faith and that significant time during her teenage years when she realized her call to serve others. She is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Public Administration. She also has a Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management from Robert Morris University in, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. She continues to serve her community as a member of the board of Trustees at the Mount Ararat Baptist Church, and various other nonprofit organizations.
