Lola Lola wears this smile, along with a brimmed hat and a sleeveless sequined top, when she takes the stage toward the end of "The Blue Angel." Wrapping her famous legs around the back of a wooden chair, she sings "Falling in Love Again" (actually "Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuss/ Auf Liebe eingestellt": "From head to toe/ I'm made for love"). What siren power this song and this singer have! They prod a stern schoolteacher, Prof. Immanuel Rath, to unbutton his inhibitions, renounce propriety, propose marriage and become her crowing cuckold. All because he believed that Lola Lola was singing to him alone as her eyes raked the room for contact with the customers. The Professor fell for the oldest, most seductive lie in show business: the lie of intimacy.

The Immortal Legend of Glamour
Success in life depends upon your sense of values.
Marlene Dietrich Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) was one of the most remarkable actresses of the 20th century. - She did not go in for national politics but was fiercely anti-fascist and pro-American. - She had no interest in gender politics but her androgyny contributed to her glamorous myth and became its essential part. Being an alluring woman, she would dress up like a man and have publicly known affairs with women. - She looked like a heavenly prima donna but during WW2 she worked on the front in Northern Africa and Europe entertaining American troops and helping in hospitals for which the U.S., the French and the Israeli governments awarded her medals. - She had terrific legs but wore trousers wherever she appeared. - She had a career after 40 but became a legend long before her death.

Marie Magdelene Dietrich von Losch (aka Marlene) was born in Berlin, Germany on December 27, 1901. Her father was an army officer who had served in the Franco-Prussian War. Because of his constant absences from the family due to his army duties, Marlene and the rest had to rely on themselves. When he died and she was 11, Marlene's mother married Eduard von Losch and he adopted the Dietrich children. Marlene enjoyed music and attended concerts. She was adept at playing the violin and piano. By the time she was in her mid-teens, Marlene had discovered the stage. Acting was to be her vocation. In 1921, Marlene applied for an acting school run by Max Reinhardt. She was accepted. She appeared in several stage production, but never had more than a couple of spoken lines. In short, she wasn't setting the stage world on fire. She attempted films for the first time in 1922 Her first film was NAPOLEON'S YOUNGER BROTHER which was followed by TRAGEDY OF LOVE. On this last project, she met Rudolf Sieber and married him in 1924. The union lasted until his death in 1976 although they didn't live together that whole time. The remainder of her early film career was generally filled with bit roles that never amounted to a whole lot. After being seen in the German production of BLUE ANGEL in 1930, Marlene was given a crack at Hollywood.

Marlene Dietrich was a film actress and cabaret singer from Berlin who became a Hollywood star after starring in Josef von Sternberg's film The Blue Angel (1930). The film featured "Falling in Love Again (I Can't Help It"), a signature song she performed internationally until the 1970s. All angles and androgyny, she's been a sex symbol and fashion icon since she appeared in German films in the 1920s. As an actress she is best known for her roles in the von Sternberg movies Shanghai Express Blonde Venus (1932) and The Scarlet Empress (1934). In Hollywood her best-known roles were in the western comedy Destry Rides Again (1939, featuring her other well-known song, "The Boys in the Back Room"), the courtroom drama Witness for the Prosecution (1957) and the Orson Welles thriller Touch of Evil (1958). As a singer she was known for cabaret songs sung in a deep, sultry voice, for her support of U.S. troops during World War II and for her popularity in the 1950s in London and Las Vegas. She broke her leg during a performance in 1975 and stopped appearing publicly, spending her remaining years as a recluse in her Paris apartment.
