Movie comment: De Palma's 'Redacted' or our forced labyrinthic way to Truth
Last Saturday, we went to see 'Redacted' at the theater. My husband and I have been expecting the movie since it made headlines and controversy after the Venice film festival. We dragged our reluctant nearly 18 year old with us. 'This is your chance to see how our governments treat, or mistreat, the Truth', we told him. He complied.
'Redacted' is the story of the rape and the killing of a 15 year old iraqi girl by two US soldiers stationed in Iraq, constructed from real material; videos and video surveillance cameras inside military camps, blogs, soldiers' testimonies, TV footage, unavailable to the public through mainstream media. The story is set in the larger context of the war in Iraq and De Palma shows us the reality of life in and around a US checkpoint, where many Iraqi civilians were killed. The movie could have been a documentary except that, De Palma, for legal reasons, wasn't able to use the real material and he had to fictionalise the story relying on actors and a carefully scripted scenario. This is a very convoluted, labyrinthic, way to reality. The reality of the Iraq war is heavily redacted on our screens and in our newspapers, and De Plama restores to us this reality through fiction. He also uses video footage as to give the impression of a documentary.

THE BLACK RHAPSODIES OF BRIAN DE PALMA
There does seem to be a bit of Brian De Palma blowing in the cinematic winds these days leading up to the release of The Black Dahlia , and it’s taking form in a lot of interesting posts and comments on the director and his films on some very smart blogs. I’ve already mentioned Slant ’s Auteur Fatale series, as well as well-considered observations from That Little Round-headed Boy (whose piece on Mission to Mars even gets a mention from the oracle at De Palma a la Mod Girish and Peter Nellhaus . Now you can add Peet Gelderblom’s two cents to the coffers of fine writers checking on De Palma. Peet muses about paradox in De Palma's work on his blog, Lost In Negative Space , an off-shoot of his excellent film criticism site 24 Lies A Second . (Peet also points to Soundtrack.net where snippets of Mark Isham's score for The Black Dahlia can be heard.)

by Dennis Harvey (November 15, 2007) [EDITOR' NOTE: "Redacted" was originally reviewed in indieWIRE's sister publication covering Bay Area film, To their credit, many filmmakers are using their cinematic podium to address, directly or indirectly, the war in Iraq or "the quagmire," as many might put it. That may slow down (even if the quagmire's woes show no signs of doing the same) eventually, given that so far movies on the theme have been overwhelmingly rejected by the public. Maybe ticket buyers just don't want to fork out cash to get the same bad news they can access for free elsewhere. Starry downbeat dramas " In the Valley of Elah Rendition A Mighty Heart " and " Lions for Lambs " all tanked. The documentary " No End in Sight ," which most critics raved was practically a civic duty for audiences to see, failed to become even a significant urban arthouse success.
Still, you've got to applaud artists for taking on the unpleasant of an unpopular, ongoing war in a commercial climate where it too often seems "the people" just want dumb-and-dumber escapism. Right?

Brian De Palma's UNTOUCHABLES prequel, CAPONE RISING, loses a Cage, but keeps a king!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I'm not one of those people that automatically thinks Nicolas Cage is a horrible actor. He's done some shitty, shitty movies, but he's also done some great projects, and has been good in them. LEAVING LAS VEGAS, RAISING ARIZONA, FACE/OFF (sue me, I love that flick), ADAPTATION, THE ROCK, WILD AT HEART, MOONSTRUCK to name a few. Having said that, I'm glad he's left the Brian De Palma prequel, THE UNTOUCHABLES: CAPONE RISING . He had to drop the project due to scheduling issues. I like Cage and give him credit as an actor, but I didn't like the casting of him as Capone. He just didn't feel right. However, someone who does feel right is still on the project. Gerard Butler is still attached to the project, playing the character of Jimmy Malone, the younger version of Sean Connery's character from the original film.

August 31, 2007: Brian DePalma's same old song
Over on Pajamas, we have another article I am proud of [ oh, shut up-ed. give me a second], Drima of Sudanese Thinker's Wild Parties in Sudan . We are working very hard to expand our global spread via the blogosphere to give people something they wouldn't get elsewhere. We hope you appreciate it. Finding and publishing such things take up a lot of my time nowadays. Meanwhile, what used to take a lot of my time has a way of encroaching on my present reality. Apparently, someone I used to know...Brian DePalma... may have resurrected his career, seemingly scoring a hit at the Venice Film Festival with his new film " Redacted ." The subject is a particularly gruesome real-life rape case, concerning a 14-year old Iraqi girl raped by US servicemen who also murdered her family. Now I don't know the details of this case. (Some of the servicemen involved have been given long sentences and it sounds truly hideous.) Yet, according to Reuters, the film is halfway between documentary and fiction. This to me is a highly suspect form, especially when based on recent events (2006), which are more verifiable than most. You would think the truth would be enough. But what interests me more is Brian's selection of material and his intention, as he states it, to stop the war.

"We've killed over 400,000 of their citizens." That's what actor Tim Robbins thinks U.S. troops have been doing in Iraq. He made the claim last week in an appearance on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher He's wrong, of course. American soldiers have not been slaughtering 300 Iraqis a day for the last four years. Even for one of Hollywood's most feculent personalities, this is an appalling slander of U.S. troops. The Iraq Body Count is an antiwar website that tallies all civilian deaths in Iraq as reported in the news media. Theirs is a comprehensive count that seeks to hold the United States and Britain accountable for a wide range of civilian deaths. As explained at iraqbodycount.org : "The count includes civilian deaths caused by coalition military action and by military or paramilitary responses to the coalition presence (e.g. insurgent and terrorist attacks). It also includes excess civilian deaths caused by criminal action resulting from the breakdown in law and order which followed the coalition invasion."

It’s not often that a press conference becomes an actual news event, but that’s what happened last Monday at the New York Film Festival. Though his film Redacted screened the week before for the press, Brian DePalma took the stage before assembled members of the press that afternoon. It’s probably no surprise to say there were some hostile questions—DePalma has courted controversy throughout his career. One woman, sitting defiantly in the front row, asked “Did you intend to make a hipster horror film?” and looked unmoved when DePalma responded, simply, “No.” Another accused him of helping to create a culture desensitized to violence—and that was even one of the nicer questions. Most of the festival’s press conferences have been a series of complimentary questions, long digressions about camera style, or totally oddball questions; nothing quite matched the level of criticism being lobbed at DePalma that day.
But nothing the critics had to say came close to what happened about 10 minutes into the conference, when Magnolia Pictures representative Eamonn Bowles spoke up from the back of the room to dispute DePalm’s claim that his film has, ironically, been redacted because of executive producer Mark Cuban’s opposition to some images. A little background: DePalma based his film on a

The Director's Chair Interviews Hollywood's foremost visual stylist revisits familiar territory with the fight night whodunit Snake Eyes
by Wade Major Click here for Brian DePalma films, books, and soundtracks Having directed some of the most memorable and controversial films of the past 30 years, Brian DePalma can afford to relax a little. So why doesn't he? Because he loves what he does, that's why. As he begins his fourth decade as one of Hollywood's most in-demand directors, the maker of Scarface Carrie Blow Out Body Double Dressed to Kill Carlito's Way , and The Untouchables is enjoying his status as an entertainment industry institution, a visionary stylist whose past films continue to inspire and provoke new generations of filmmakers as well as his own contemporaries. Having only recently scored his biggest career success to date with Mission: Impossible , DePalma is enjoying more creative freedom than he has had in years. It comes as little surprise, then, that he should seize the chance to once again return to the genre for which he is best known, the psychological thriller. Starring Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage and Oscar-nominee Gary Sinise, Snake Eyes is a highly-stylized, claustrophobic, real-time thriller set during and after an Atlantic City boxing match where the United States Secretary of Defense is assassinated. Sinise plays Navy Commander Kevin Dunne, the head of the security detail charged with protecting the Secretary. Cage is Dunne's childhood buddy, a tainted Atlantic City police detective forced to rise to the occasion when the murder literally falls in his lap. Together they must race with fate and an impending hurricane to unravel a labyrinthine puzzle meticulously designed by DePalma and his preferred screenwriter of late, David Koepp (
