Is Brian De Palma cursed? From a purely populist perspective we might conclude in the affirmative, but this would be to deny the development of a career now in its fifth decade and still provoking the most divisive of viewer reactions. I don't think it's a stretch to say that De Palma is the most visible American director now working to inspire such passionate, often violent, choruses both pro and con. Yet in the face of these critical tempests one simple fact is conveniently ignored: De Palma continues to work steadily through it all. Whatever one's opinion of the man's output, his sheer dedication to his art form, regardless of those praising him to the heavens or condemning him to an early grave, is reason enough to take a closer look at a varied career, one fascinating in its complexity, themes, and obsessions.

(AP) Director Brian De Palma presented his new film "Redacted," a harrowing depiction of the horrors of the Iraq War, at the Venice Film Festival on Friday.
The director of "Carrie," "Scarface" and "Casualties of War" began the project after reading about a March 2006 incident in Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad, when a group of U.S. troops in the 101st Airborne Division raped a 14-year-old girl before setting her body alight and shooting dead her parents and 5-year-old sister.

It's also possibly the most direct, and the most potentially upsetting. "Redacted," a fictional story based on real events, wasn't even a germ of an idea when a representative of HDNet films asked De Palma if he'd be interested in shooting a film on high-definition video. De Palma was intrigued, but wanted to make sure he could first come up with an idea appropriate to the medium. He found his subject after he read about the rape and murder of a 14-year-old Iraqi girl,

Brian De Palma: "Making You Aware of What You're Watching"
Submitted by dwhudson on November 12, 2007 - 5:51pm. Interviews
    By Sean Axmaker
Brian De Palma arrived for the North American premier of Redacted at the Toronto International Film Festival direct from Venice , where he won the prestigious Silver Lion for Best Director. It was a controversial award for a controversial film, a fictionalized portrait of real-life war crime in the current Iraq occupation, which De Palma has made more provocative by using the techniques of non-fiction filmmaking, TV news reporting, video diaries and propaganda pieces to challenge audiences to question what exactly they're seeing. He was clearly exhausted from his whirlwind schedule (he was ordering a sandwich when I was ushered into the hotel room; "I just don't have any time to deal with anything else," he remarked as I set up my tape recorder), but it didn't blunt his comments about his feelings of impotence in the face of war and the cinematic response that is

Interviewed by Noel Murray November 15th, 2007 For more than 40 years, Brian De Palma has been directing feature films that divide audiences, from box-office hits decried for their violence ( Carrie Dressed To Kill Scarface The Untouchables ) to box-office flops that draw passionate defenders ( Obsession The Fury Blow Out Femme Fatale ). But few De Palma films have been as controversial as Redacted , his impressionistic recreation of a rape and murder committed by U.S. forces in Iraq. Based on an actual incident
