Executive summary: Gone With the Wind Olivia de Havilland is the last surviving principal cast member from Gone With the Wind . She played Melanie, the sweet southern belle with a backbone of steel, and de Havilland is reportedly very much like the character she portrayed. De Havilland won two Oscars, for To Each His Own , a 1946 drama in which her character became pregnant out of wedlock, and three years later as The Heiress , in which Montgomery Clift might be pursuing her only for her money. Biography Filmography Awards Article ... GONE WITH THE WIND Originally just a pretty face opposite gallant heroes in many-a Hollywood adventure film, Olivia de Havilland later proved herself to be a very capable dramatic actress, earning five Academy Award nominations and two Best Actress Oscars over the course of her career. De Havilland (on the far right in this still, along with Ross Alexander, Dick Powell, and Jean Muir) began her film career in 1935, playing Hermia in Warner Bros. ' A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, after a talent scout for director Max Reinhardt saw her in a local stage production of Shakespeare's legendary play. The film was her first under a seven-year studio contract with Warner Bros. De Havilland in another of her earliest roles under contract to Warner Bros. as Lucille Jackson opposite James Cagney in THE IRISH IN US (1935), a comedy about policemen and prizefighters. Though not filmed until after A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, THE IRISH IN US and another Warners comedy, ALIBI IKE (1935) co-starring Joe E. Brown, were released in theatres before the Shakespearean film adaptation. As a result, despite her desire to be known as more than a beauty mark in films, these two low-budget comedies became de Havilland's debut movies. It is important to note however, that despite the quality of these vehicles, de Havilland did receive star billing in these films quite a prestigious beginning for a novice film actress.

A Tribute to Olivia de Havilland
What strikes me as most ironic about the career of Olivia de Havilland is that even though she was known for playing characters who could usually be described as "pleasant" and "endearing," it was she who sued Warner Brothers in 1943 and essentially broke the studio system that kept actors and actresses in virtual slavery to companies like WB. She should be applauded if only for that.
But, of course, there's much more. Olivia earned five Academy Award nominations and two Best Actress Oscars, for

19. Olivia De Havilland
Fan written article providing biographical information and a career overview.
Elizabeth's Olivia de Havilland Page
Olivia (far right) and cast in "Gone With the Wind". In 1939, Olivia begged the Warner Brothers bigwigs to let her do "Gone With the Wind". They finally agreed, and Olivia was thrilled. She played Melanie Hamilton, the "mealy-mouthed ninny", as Scarlett called her. But Melanie proves to be strong, even stronger than Scarlett's "stupid Ashley" (Rhett's words this time!) The cast included Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Hattie Mc Daniel, Butterfly Mc Queen, and Clark Gable. Olivia and Gable became friends during the production. In fact, it was Olivia who convinced Gable to stay in "GWTW". He wanted to quit, because he had to cry over Bonnie's death. But he listened to Olivia and stuck it out. "GWTW" was a rousing success, and Olivia was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, but she lost to her co-star, Hattie Mc Daniel. After "GWTW", Olivia once again starred in a series of movies co-starring Errol Flynn. One such movie was the classic western of 1940, "Santa Fe Trail", also starring Ronald Reagan. She also starred with Flynn in 1941's "They Died with Their Boots On". Olivia played Elizabeth Bacon in this story of the life of General George Armstrong Custer. That same year, Olivia starred with James Cagney and Rita Hayworth in the romantic comedy "The Strawberry Blonde". She played Amy Lind, the best friend of Virginia Brush (Rita), the girl Biff Grimes (Cagney) is infatuated with. But Virginia goes for Biff's friend. As Biff tries to get closer to Virginia, he winds up getting closer to Amy, and sparks fly!
