William Heath Davis William Heath Davis came from a Boston sea-faring, ship-owning family, although he was born in Honolulu in 1822. His father, William Heath Davis, senior, married a daughter of Oliver Holmes, another Boston ship-master and a relative of Doctor Oliver Wendell Holmes. It is interesting to note that the shipping trade to the Coast and to Hawaii was almost exclusively in the hands of Boston firms from its beginnings to the days of the Gold Rush. Davis' grandmother on his mother's side was a native of Hawaii, and her husband, Oliver Holmes, in addition to his trading operations, was at one time Governor of Oahu. Davis first visited California as a small boy in 1831. He came a second time in 1833, and in 1838, arrived aboard the "Don Quixote" to enter the service of his uncle Nathan Spear as a clerk in the latter's store in Monterey. For four years Davis followed the fortunes of his uncle, first at Monterey and later at Yerba Buena, the straggling settlement which he was to help build into the City of San Francisco. In 1842 he engaged as supercargo on the "Don Quixote" and made several trips to the Hawaiian Islands. In San Francisco, Davis entered business on his own account, and in time became one of the town's prominent merchants and ship-owners. He visited San Diego many times and, in 1847, married into a prominent Old Town San Diego family. His wife was Maria de Jesus, daughter of Don Joaquin Estudillo, a wealthy ranchero who was son of

William Morris Davis No Erosion of Impact Personal Life History - William Morris Davis was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on February 12, 1850. He died in Pasadena, CA., on February 5, 1934. He was the son of Edward M. Davis and Martha Mott Davis, who were both members of the Society of Friends. His father a Philadelphia businessman, was expelled from the society for enlisting in the Union army during the civil war. His mother was the daughter of Lucretia Mott an early and strenuous worker for women's rights and a firm antagonist of slavery. His mother resigned her post on the society shortly after the expulsion of her husband from the group. In 1879 Davis married Ellen B. Warner of Springfield Massachusetts. After her death he married Mary M. Wyman of Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1914. After her death he married Lucy L. Tennant of Milton, Massachusetts in 1928. She miraculously survived him. Academic History - Davis' contributions cover the separate field of geography, geology, and meteorology. He had an emphasis throughout his career on education in both the high school level as well as the college level. Davis' most influential concept was the "cycle of erosion". He worked on refining and detailing this concept for most of his professional career. Many of his early publications layed the foundation for this concept but it is the essay "the rivers of pennsylvania,1889" where he first states and defines the concept. It is clear that Davis was influenced by Darwin's organic evolution theory. In a 1883 writing he states "it seems most probable, that the many pre-existent streams in each river basin concentrated their water in a single channel of overflow, and that this one channel survives- a fine example of natural selection."

William Morris Davis Biography This noted geologist was responsible for one of the major theories to come out of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Davis proposed a cyclicity of river erosion and subsequent uplift of the land that helps to define, at least in relative terms, the age of a river in relation to the surrounding topography. Davis was the son of a prominent Quaker family and grew up in Central Pennsylvania. His father participated in the American Civil War, and as such was not a prominent figure in his life. Davis was brought up by his mother and grandmother. Life was strict for Davis, but his thirst for knowlegde was never subdued. Davis excelled in his academic pursuits, and taught at Harvard. He helped to found and was a member in many schorlarly, academic and scientific societies. These associations helped him to further his research goals and to maintain his high level of academia. Davis had many prominent students throughout his tenure at Harvard. He helped to shape the geographic minds of the twentieth century, and was perhaps one of the most popular, if not one of the most difficult professors at Harvard.
