DALLAS - The widow of Sammy Davis Jr. is suing two former business partners over the rights to the Rat Pack entertainer’s life story and management of his legacy. Altovise Davis says in a lawsuit filed in federal court that the two men exaggerated their show-business credentials and defrauded her into signing away some rights to her husband’s estate. The entertainer — a fixture in Las Vegas with fellow Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Joey Bishop — died of throat cancer in 1990 at age 64. He owed more than $5 million to the IRS, forcing his widow to auction many of his personal belongings. Altovise Davis says she gave her intellectual rights to Sammy Davis Jr. Enterprises Inc., formed in 2004 by Barrett LaRoda and Anthony Francis, in return for a one-third share in the business.

At the age of four he starred in a short act called "Will Mastin's Gang, featuring Little Sammy." In 1932 he made his debut in the Warner Brothers film Rufus Jones for President . Davis played the part of Rufus, a little boy who dreams of becoming President one day. He continued appearing with the Will Maustin Gang throughout the 1930s. In 1943 he was drafted to serve in a Special Forces unit during World War II. Davis' autobiography Sammy: An Autobiography , describes in detail the racial prejudice he encountered during his years in the army. This racial prejudice continued throughout his career and lifetime. After the war he was supposed to be cast with Elvis Presley, another war veteran, for Stanley Kramer's The Defiant Ones . At the last minute the casting was changed, however. Presley later confided to Davis that the change of casting was racially motivated.

Altovise Davis says she gave her intellectual rights to Sammy Davis Jr. Enterprises Inc., formed in 2004 by Barrett LaRoda and Anthony Francis, in return for a one-third share in the business. She alleges the men hid the company's financial records from her. According to the lawsuit, LaRoda and Francis killed the movie negotiations by demanding a "substantial" fee and credit as executive producers. In an e-mail to The Associated Press, LaRoda said he was trying only to get Mrs. Davis more money from the movie. Davis is "like a mother to me" but is being manipulated by Burt Boyar, LaRoda said.

When Elvira and Sammy Davis separated in 1928, the senior Davis gained custody of his son and promptly took him on the road as part of the Mastin Troupe. Young Sammy quickly took to the performing life. He became a Mastin Troupe regular at age 5 in 1930 and at age 7 made his film debut in the musical short "Rufus Jones for President." Davis Sr. and "uncle" Will Mastin carefully shielded the youngster from racial discrimination, explaining away slights and snubs and ensuring that Sammy's early years, at least, were free from the limitations imposed by racial ignorance and hatred.

I’m doubly glad to feature Sammy Davis Jr. because not only do I actually dig this cat, I’ve read with great interest jeffash over at AM then FM who occasionally features music from his Dad’s collection. This is called inspiration. And, Sammy just seems to hit the mood on the head today. A founding member of the Rat Pack, Sammy just exudes laid back cool and swaggering confidence. Mrs. Davis also charged that she was close to a deal last year with a Hollywood studio for a movie about her husband until Barrett LaRoda and Anthony Francis got involved. LaRoda and Francis didn't immediately comment today. The suit is seeking unspecified monetary and punitive damages. Davis died in 1990 of throat cancer. He was 64.
