Biography
Birth Name: Ruth Elizabeth Davis

Died: October 6, 1989, Neuilly-sur-Seine, France Gallery Filmography Film Highlights
Bitch Goddess
ette had a very long and active film career, she made over 100 films. Her debut film was in Bad Sister (1931), her final film was Wicked Stepmother (1989). Through her much acclaimed acting career she won two Oscars, her first for Dangerous in 1935, her second for Jezebel in 1938 and received ten Academy Award nominations. Ms. Davis portrayed many types of women in her films but will be best remembered for her strong independent characters – the Bitch Goddesses. She had an unconventional beauty but dominated the screen with incredible presence, and GREAT LINES . My favorite film is by far Now Voyager , I couldn't begin to tell you how many times I've seen it or how many times more I will watch it. To pick a second is ,nearly impossible, Dark Victory Jezebel , or All About Eve could be possibilities. I have many of her films and have seen many more, some are great others are simply contractual obligations, and quite obviously so.

The history of the first Academy Awards
Find out about the history of the very first Academy Awards Ceremony in 1929.
The Hollywood Film Industry celebrated it’s finest for the first time on May 16th, 1929. On that night the inaugural Academy Awards ceremony was held. The awards were given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which was formed in 1927 as a non-profit corporation. It originally comprised 36 members. The first President of the Academy was Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. As well as recognizing outstanding achievement in the world of moviedom, the Academy had as it’s purpose to advance the field of science and the arts in movies, to provide a forum for different branches of the movie industry and to increase public education and awareness of the motion picture industry. The award that would come to symbolise the Academy Awards was a 12 inch high statuette, a model of a naked man plated in gold. The man was actually a knight who was holding a sword. He was standing on a reel of film. The reel had five spokes which represented the original five branches of the Academy. The statuette was conceived by MGM executive art director Cedric Gibbons who sketched it during a meeting of the Academy’s Board of Governors. He described the figure as one of “dignity and individual character which recipients would be proud to display.” The statue was sculpted by George Stanley. For many years the award was known simply as ‘the Statue.’ So, how did the Statue come to be known as ‘Oscar’? No one can be certain as there are three claimants to the distinction of so naming the statuette. Bette Davis is credited with naming it after her first husband, Harmon Oscar Nelson, Jr. Another story has it that a librarian at the Academy by the name of Margaret Herrick said that the statue reminded her of her uncle Oscar. Whoever it was who gave the Oscar it’s name, the title certainly stuck. Today the entire Awards ceremony is known simply as the Oscars.

She was the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She was the first actress to receive ten Academy Award nominations and the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. Kim Carnes's song, "Bette Davis Eyes", became a worldwide hit and the highest selling record of 1981 in the U.S.
In addition to being a fine actress, Betty Davis had a way with words. She was known as someone who always said what was on her mind. Here are some of my favorites from The Girl Who Walked Home Alone , the recently published biography based on extensive interviews with her.

Dark Victory (1939) is a sentimental, tragic and moving melodrama (a "weepie" or "woman's picture") from Warner Bros. studios - made in Hollywood's most famous and competitive year. The film contains an electrifying, compelling, tour de force , tear-jerking performance from its major star Bette Davis. It was a bit of a risk for the movie studio to make and publicize an intense film about a terminally-ill patient with "prognosis negative." The protagonist is a young socialite-heiress named Judith Traherne (Davis), who suffers from a brain tumor and ultimately falls in love with her supportive and dedicated doctor Frederick Steele (Brent). In the midst of her deadly illness, she comforts her best friend Ann King (Fitzgerald), and courageously meets her fate when her eyesight dims. She climbs her stairs for the last time - accompanied by Max Steiner's swelling score in the film's finale. A title from a film trailer proclaimed: "The love story no woman will ever forget!"

    Stardust: The Bette Davis Story
Dan Kaufman, reviewer January 16, 2008
Described at the beginning of this documentary as a vulnerable, lost girl, Bette Davis was also strong enough to carve out the career she wanted when Hollywood was not only a man's world but treated actors like puppets. Davis often preferred meaty roles that required her to play gutsy and abrasive women - her break-out role as Mildred in Of Human Bondage is considered the first leading-lady bitch in cinema. Here she's shown to be a perfectionist who suffered from wild mood swings and often gave directors and studio boss Jack Warner hell. Narrated by Susan Sarandon, this documentary should please Davis fans and features some great footage such as when she appeared on a '70s talk show and discussed her disastrous wedding night (she was a virgin when she first married at 24). E-Mail Biography Bette Davis was born Ruth Elizabeth Davis, on April 5, 1908, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to Harlow Morrell Davis, a patent lawyer, and Ruthie Favor. Her parents divorced when Bette was seven. Her Mother supported Bette and her sister by working as a portrait photographer. Bette attended several boarding schools and, in her teens, began calling herself Bette after Honor de Balzac's nineteenth-century novel Cousin Bette. She acted in school plays and in semiprofessional stock productions and in the summer of 1925, studied interpretive dance at New Hampshire's Mariarden artists' colony. After graduating from Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, in 1927, she studied acting in New York City at the John Murray AndersonRobert Milton School, where her dance teacher was Martha Graham. Davis got a small role in a Rochester stock company production of Broadway (1928), acted and ushered on Cape Cod, and then rejoined the Rochester company. She made her New York City debut off Broadway at the Provincetown Playhouse in The Earth Between (1929) , after which she toured with Blanche Yurka's repertory company, appearing in two plays by Henrik Ibsen, The Wild Duck and The Lady from the Sea . Davis then acted on Broadway in Broken Dishes (1929) and Solid South (1930) . Bette failed her first screen test for Samuel Goldwyn that year, but she passed her second screen test for Universal Pictures and signed her first Hollywood contract.
