Absence and Loss' focuses on the remarkable number of Holocaust memorials in Berlin; on the sculptures, art installations, unusual plaques and signs that can be found in public places. Juxtaposing images and text, it reveals the destructive impact of the Nazis on the daily life of German Jews and other minorities, and the void left in post-war Germany by their annihilation and emigration. Protest and resistance are also featured both through
portraits and memorials.
The exhibition aims to present an impression of the period, demonstrate man's inhumanity to man and encourage reflection on current issues of racism and extremism.

Marion Davies Home Films Gallery Links ... Email Biography Marion Davies was born Marion Cecelia Douras on January 3, 1897 in Brooklyn, New York. Davis performed as a chorus girl and Ziegfeld Follies player before making her film debut in 1917 in Runaway Romany . Davies had the right attributes for silent movies. She would panomine in exaggerated ways in comedic performances. Davies met newspaper tycoon, William Randolph Hearst, soon after she'd started working in movies. They fell in love and began a relationship that lasted until Hearst's death. Hearst's love for Davies and belief in her talent led him to form Cosmopolitan Pictures solely to produce starring vehicles for her. Davies films received good reviews(from Heart owned newspapers) and free publicity her films were not commercially successful, despite the enormous sums of money Cosmopolitan lavished on Davies' pictures, Regardless, Davies proved herself a talented screen personality in The Belle of New York The Restless Sex Enchantment When Knighthood Was in Flower Little Old New York (1923), and many others. Hearst loved seeing her in expensive costume pictures such as

IMDB Page Davies, Marion(1/3/1897-9/22/1961): Norma played an extra in the 1920 Marion Davies epic, The Restless Sex . Davies started her career as a showgirl, even making it into the Ziegfeld Follies. For years overshadowed by her affair with William Randolph Hearst , within recent decades, Marion Davies has become more appreciated as a comedienne. William Haines , costar of Norma's 1925 film, The Tower of Lies , summed up Davies' career best when he told Lawrence Quirk, "The sad thing about it all was that Marion was just delightful in certain parts and could have made the grade if she had never laid eyes on Hearst, but his insistence on artificially inflating her image, often in inappropriate roles, resulted in her becoming, at least so far as her career went, a Hollywood joke." When Irving Thalberg purchased the screen rights to The Barretts of Wimpole Street , Norma wasn't sure if she could excel in the portrayal of the invalid poet, Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Hearst asked to let Marion have the part, then Norma changed her mind and Louis B. Mayer told Hearst there was no way Marion could have the part. Then when production was delayed for

NOTICE - webminster The webminister can assist you in contacting the author. Reader's Theatre for the SCA by THL Brighid Ross I. Justification of Style Readers Theater is reading-aloud to communicate a story through oral interpretation rather than acting. (rather a long dull sentence, but accurate). Readers read from a “script” and reading parts are divided among the readers. No memorization, costumes, blocking, or special lighting is necessary. I am introducing Reader’s Theater as a bardic activity because I feel that this style of performance will make available “period” literature and language to a wider audience within our society. Our Society is made up of a populous with similar interests, but varied location. A traditional theatrical production is limited to those members of the society who live close enough to each other to meet to practice several times a week, for several weeks. This can be almost impossible to arrange. The style employed by Reader’s Theater will allow a much more “spread out” group to have the opportunity to work together on projects. Scripts can be handed out, and conversations relating to meaning, characterization, and timing can happen via mail, both electronic and traditional, phone conversations, and rehearsals at events. A well explained and thought out piece of Reader’s Theater can be performed after very few rehearsals. Whereas a full length play, or even several scenes from a play, can take weeks of rehearsal to practice blocking (movement on stage), using props, getting used to costumes and creating scenery, using Reader’s Theater to perform the same scenes allows time to be spent on studying the language and the meaning and emotion of the work. Reader’s Theater style productions are “user friendly.” For a novice actor, memorizing any part can be intimidating, when you add in “period” language, iambic pentameter, and couplets, many new actors may just give up. Having the script available to refer to makes it more accessible for those interested in and new to acting. But the style remains challenging for even the experienced actor, it is often used as an exercise in working with establishing the tension or mood in a scene, using nothing more than voice inflexion and intention.

Marion Davies in the 1920sOf Greek and Irish heritage, she was born Marion Douras in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were Herbert Douras, a lawyer who moved in New York City political circles and Rose Reilly, formerly of Jersey City, New Jersey.
Marion was the youngest of five children. Her elder siblings included Rose, Reine, and Ethel. A brother, Charles, died at the age of 15 from drowning in 1906.
The Douras brood lived near Prospect Park in Brooklyn, but already the bright lights of Manhattan beckoned to the sisters. They all became showgirls on the Great White Way, where Florenz Ziegfeld was beginning his spectacular annual "Ziegfeld Follies" shows. These shows were considered the high end of vaudeville.
The girls changed their surname to Davies, which one of them spotted from a realtor's sign in the neighborhood. Even as New York was the melting pot for new immigrants, having a WASP surname greatly helped one's prospects.
