Her career spanned some forty-five feature films with co-stars such as Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard, Dick Powell and Robert Montgomery. Known in the silent era as one of the screen's most prolific clowns, Marion was one of the few silent stars to survive the transition to talkies. History often remembers Marion only for her association with magnate William Randolph Hearst, their story is truly one of America's greatest love stories of all time. One of the most loved stars in Hollywood, Marion was the socialite of her era, often hosting grand parties with themes such as the circus, wild west or the baby party in which everyone came dressed as children. She was also among the most giving of the Hollywood crowd, building two children's hospitals and establishing a foundation to care for them long after her death.

    MARION DAVIES
The Love of William Randolph Hearst!
Marion Cecelia Douras (Marion Davies) was born in the borough of Brooklyn, New York on January 3, 1897. She had been bitten by the "show biz bug" early as she watched her sisters perform in local stage productions. She wanted to do the same. As Marion got older, she tried out for various school plays and did fairly well. Once her formal education had ended, Marion started out as a chorus girl in New York City and eventually found herself in the famed Ziegfeld Follies. But she wanted more than to dance. Acting, to Marion, was the epitome of show business and aimed her sights in that direction. Her first film was RUNAWAY ROMANY in 1917 when she was 20. It was a film written by herself and directed by her brother-in-law. The film wasn't exactly a box-office smash, but for Marion it was a start. The film was, instead, a stepping stone to bigger things. The following year Marion starred in two films, THE BURDEN OF PROOF and CECILIA OF THE PINK ROSES. It was this latter film that was backed by newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hearst, whom Marion would launch a long term romantic relationship for the next 30 years. Because of Hearst's newspaper empire, Marion would be promoted as no actress before her. She appeared in numerous films over the next few years with CINEMA MURDER, in 1919, being one of the most suspenseful.

Silent Film Clips Message Board Marion Davies (1897-1961) Marion Davies was born Marion Cecelia Douras in Brooklyn, New York on January 3rd, 1897, and she attended school at the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Hastings-on-the-Hudson. Marion's father was Judge Bernard Douras, a City Magistrate of New York. Marion and her sisters enjoyed performing from an early age. Her first professional appearance on the stage was in a popular musical comedy show called "Chin Chin", where her beauty was noticed by the famous illustrator Howard Chandler Christy. He painted her as "Morning." Other famous illustrators and artists of the period sought Marion out to be their model as well: Harrison Fisher, Montgomery Flagg, Haskell Coffin, Penrhyn Stanlaws, Nell Brinkley, and Hamilton King. For Cosmopolitan, Marion's films of note were mostly costume dramas, including "When Knighthood Was in Flower" (1922), in which she played Mary Tudor, and "Little Old New York" (1923), in which she appeared dressed as a boy through most of the film. Marion really came into her own when she was signed by M-G-M and began to make comedies, such as the film "Show People" (1928), a nostalgic vehicle which featured many of the stock players and stars of that famous studio in cameo appearances, and "The Patsy" (1928) in which she proved delightful as a young flapper who falls in love with her sister's beau. goldensilents.com

    Marion the Chatelaine
Marion Davies (1897-1961) Marion Davies was born Marion Cecilia Douras in Brooklyn, NY in 1897. Davies met William Randolph Hearst while she was in the Zeigfeld Follies. She became his mistress and remained so until his death in 1951. Hearst attempted to make her a star, but unfortunately insisted on serious roles when her talent lay in comedy. Hearst's production company, Cosmopolitan, was founded primarily for Davies' films, and it eventually was absorbed by MGM. At MGM, Davies became a vehicle for Louis Mayer's search for power. He treated her well, lavishing money and attention on her, even giving her a private bungalow on the lot. Some people felt that these rewards exceeded her worth as an actress, but not the value of the MGM publicity in the Hearst papers. Davies moved to Warner's when she didn't get to play Elizabeth Barrett Browning, but retired from films shortly thereafter. Heart was offended by the portrayal of Davies in Citizen Kane (although Davies herself did not seem to mind). Hearst publications boycotted the movie, and it received little of the publicity it would have otherwise received. Davies stood beside Hearst as his finances and health began to fail, offering all the gifts he had given her for his support. It is accepted that they both had deep feelings for each other. She was shunned by his family, however, and was not allowed to attend his funeral.
