(Peter Blake Gallery, Orange County) Art is art and everything else is everything else, says paul darrow quoting Ad Reinhardt.

PAUL DARROW
by Shirle Gottlieb
Peter Blake Gallery
, Orange County) "Art is art and everything else is everything else," says Paul Darrow quoting Ad Reinhardt.
"Art is not something you do on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, and it is not a career; art is a way of life as essential as breathing," says Paul Darrow quoting himself.
"Darrow's collagesbits and pieces of artifacts from his personal life merged into new references through unusual juxtapositionsare important aspects of his (work)," writes art historian, Arthur Stevens.
"This blend of apparent opposites explains a lot about Paul Darrow. He is living proof that a near-perfect balance of intellect and intuition can be found and maintained," says Marjorie L. Harth, director of Pomona College Montgomery Art Galleries.
And that is only the beginning of a life-long list of characterizations that have emanated from Darrow's singular vision. California born and bred, this artist/printmaker/poet/ educator/photographer/sailor was also inspired by his mentor, Suero Serisawa; the spontaneity of jazz; his attraction to Eastern philosophy; Tibetan meditation; the rhythmic flow of calligraphy; the flotsam and jetsam of daily living; and his ardent love of the ocean.
Wandering through the exhibit of his most recent poetic collages, one can spot allusions to everything just mentioned. Over and over we see shadows, echoes, and recurring abstract shapes that suggest meditative mandalas, "the path," waves of water, the horizon, calligraphic scribbles, and faded remnants of the past. Meditative and contemplative, most of this work is lyrical and mysterious with metaphysical overtones; while other pieceslike Zen koansare enigmatic riddles that engage and intrigue.

home news articles archives ... contact Of Side Trips and Signals from Mars - the Kaleidoscope Story Ptolemaic Terrascope Part One I The (American) Kaleidoscope were a band who ploughed their own strange furrow during those heady late 60s psychedelic daze and whose albums, being reissued in recent years, haven't really received the wide acclaim that they deserve. It's never easy to see why some bands don't achieve the popularity they deserve - if good music was simply enough, then Kaleidoscope would be easily as famous as so many of their West Coast counterparts, the Airplane, Moby Grape, Country Joe and the Fish or whoever your own personal favorite might be. But they're not, they never were and today, they're largely forgotten. II So now we know. Calling themselves initially The Baghdad Blues Band and later Kaleidoscope, a name given to them by producer Barry Friedman (who was instrumental in the formation of the Buffalo Springfield), they were signed to Epic on the strength of a one-track demo they'd submitted (I've researched this, and it seems it's true. Epic was then seemingly reserved by Columbia for bands it didn't quite know what to do with) and, since none of them had anything in the way of experience to speak of, they called on Chris Darrow who was already well versed in electric music and had a modicum of instrumental and vocal prowess. Lindley, Darrow and Richard Greene had all been in the Dry City Scat Band, who appear on an album released on Vanguard and issued their own EP of bluegrass, jug-band, old-timey material; hence Lindley knew Darrow and hence the connection. But I digress.

One of the College’s current strategic planning goals is to build a collection of contemporary art that will, as President Nancy Bekavac says, “enhance students’ understanding of art of our time by seeing examples of extraordinary work.”
Our senior seminar was crowded but intimate since almost all of us had begun our journey four years prior with “History of Western Civilization,” taught by Professor Blaine, a man so excited about the Middle Ages one could not help but catch his enthusiasm.

Biography:
American actor John Darrow played leading roles in "B" movies of the '30s. He got his start working in summer stock and by age 20 was appearing in silent films. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide...

Horse Racing Movies The First Auto (1927)… Russell Simpson, Frank Campeau. A successful horse breeder’s son goes to Detroit and gets involved with the auto industry. Barney Oldfield, a famous racecar driver, has a cameo. Sporting Blood (1931)… Clark Gable, Ernest Torrence, Madge Evans, Lew Cody, Marie Provost, J. Farrell MacDonald. Gable was still in his tough guy mode for this one but most of his films are worth seeing. This one revolves around a racehorse and its various owners. Broadway Bill (1934)… Warner Baxter, Myrna Loy, Walter Connolly, Helen Vinson, Lynne Overman, Raymond Walburn, Clarence Muse, Douglass Dumbrille, Charles Lane, Ward Bond, Margaret Hamilton, Clara Blandick, Frankie Darro, Jason Robards Sr. Baxter marries into money, buys a racehorse and confusion reigns. Worth seeing for Frank Capra's standard wholesome touch. In fact, he remade the film in 1950 as the musical Riding High with almost the same supporting cast. The Lemon Drop Kid (1934)… Lee Tracy, Helen Mack, William Frawley, Minna Gombell, Baby LeRoy, Robert McWade, Kitty Kelly. Tracy is a fast-talking gambler who falls for Mack. Adapted from a Damon Runyon story but plays better in the 1951 Bob Hope version. Ann Sheridan has a bit part in one of the track scenes. The Big Race (1934)… Boots Mallory, John Darrow, Paul Hurst, Frankie Darro
