High on acid once, R. Crumb invented practically all of the characters who would later captivate the cartoon world. This was in the fall of 1965 during a stay in Chicago. Crumb had apparently taken a dose of bad acid, and it left him in what he later called a weird electric state that lasted months. During this time Crumb also broke up (temporarily) with his then-wife, and tried to sell some cartoons to Playboy magazine (they were rejected). But in his sketchbook, Crumb invented Mr. Natural, Angelfood McSpade, Whiteman, Honeybunch Kaminski, the Snoid, and other characters that were later to consolidate his reputation as the Though I've augmented the story with more detail, this account of cartoon genesis is one of the "confessions" the cartoonist tells in The Confessions of Robert Crumb , a 55 minute quasi-documentary made for the British Broadcasting Company's arts program Arena , and aired in 1987. Crumbologists, that corps of fanatical Crumb aficionados who must have copies of everything the artist has ever done (be it napkin sketches or wedding announcements for friends), have long known of this program. The film appeared on VHS recently, and now Home Vision Entertainment's DVD release gives the Crumb buffs something else to collect. Though most people have probably seen Terry Zwigoff's 1994 documentary

Via Spurge come some record-breaking auction results : Charles Schulz's original art for the Sunday, April 10, 1955 Peanuts strip recently sold for $113,525, and Robert Crumb's original cover of Mr. Natural #1 sold in the same auction for $101,575, the first time either artist has cleared 6 figures.
For about 0.025% of its sale price, that same Schulz strip can be had, along with 730 others, in The Complete Peanuts 1955-1956 . Just saying. Posted by Mike Baehr in Hermenautic Circle Peanuts Robert Crumb charles m. schulz

54. Who Is Robert Crumb?
Brief and Straightforward Guide Who is robert crumb?
Who is Robert Crumb?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Robert Crumb is world famous within the realm of art and illustration. Born in 1943 in Philadelphia, he is known for his subversive and counter culture comic books. His work takes a swipe at mainstream America by using satirical methods. His cartoon strips have become pop-culture icons since gaining worldwide recognition in the 1970s. Crumb began his career by designing greeting cards in Ohio. He became a friend of Mad Magazine creator Harvey Kurtzman. Through this friendship, he contributed many cartoons, including Fritz the Cat. Crumb became a staple feature of many underground magazines, and his cartoons were soon steadily gaining recognition. In 1967, Crumb moved to San Francisco, which at the time was the center of the underground and counter culture movement. He produced his own comic, Zap Comix, in 1968 to great success. From then, Crumb's work became synonymous with underground comics and subversive cartoons. The content of Crumb’s comics was seen by many as sexually and politically shocking. This type of content had never been seen before in a comic book setting. Zap soon began to draw other illustrators to its pages. Victor Moscoso, Robert Williams, Spain Rodriguez and numerous others were attracted to this new publishing phenomenon.

    Robert Crumb
By E.B. Keehn Illustration By R. Crumb A pen-and-ink libidinist. An underground newspaper pied piper to a ‘60s counterculture that never really understood the satire of his work. A nostalgist for early 20th-century jazz. A tireless public chronicler of his unsanitary obsessions and personal shortcomings. A promoter of his own peculiar brand of narcissistic ennui. A cringeinducing misogynist. And, in recent years, a highly collectable artist and contributor to The New Yorker. Robert Crumb is all this and more. The chronicling of one’s inner obsessions is just one of the many possible ways that the public and private, and the commercial and artistic, now intersect. There was a rich history of this in literature in the first half of the 20th century (Henry Miller and William Burroughs come to mind here), but the writers’ obsessions and sexuality remained safely locked away from the general public, entombed in the written word. It was material for students and intellectuals; normal Americans rarely bothered to tread there. Crumb changed all this in the 1960s, linking together the written word with rough-and-tumble, hand-drawn images that nonetheless showed artistic depth and great technical control. In doing this, he achieved something that Miller and Burroughs were never able to achieve: simplifying, popularizing, commercializing, and promoting his privately imagined acts of self-obsession. Whether it was depraved acts with a headless woman— calling attention to the self-serving dishonesty on the part of so-called hippies—or graphic depictions of male humiliation, Crumb’s work in highly disposable underground publications like Zap Comix, Snatch, Big Ass Comics, and The East Village Other has been there, done that—and with sardonic and surprising wit.
