ROBERT CRUMB Crumb's art is born of the tradition of social commentators like George Grosz, Otto Dix and Max Beckman, and of the English caricaturists, George Cruikshank and James Gillray. Looking at his drawings , one immediately recognizes his awesome technical skill, a facility that New Yorker art critic Adam Gopnik describes as "virtuosic, the evolution of an out-of-date grotesque style into a realist style that registers the banal, the ordinary, the unconsciously humorous day to day stuff that fills our lives." Crumb's published output since 1967 has been voluminous and the circulation of that work continues to grow. There are estimated to be over two million copies of Zap Comix alone, in print. The breadth of his work encompasses the familiar coterie of characters from Mr. Natural to Mode O'Day, but he has also toured 17th Century London in Boswell's London Journal based on James Boswell's classic literary work; done a scholarly exposition on sexual deviance in Psychopathia Sexualis, and debated the Buddhist philosophy of detachment in Those Cute, Adorable Little Bearzy Wearzys. Still insecure about a technical style that is universally praised by critics, Crumb remarks: "I go through long periods of agonizing over what I'm doing. I've never been a facile draftsman I always have to struggle to figure out how to draw things."

Everything begun with Zap!Comix , and by everything I refer to Snoid Mr. Natural Shuman the human Angelfood McSpade and many other, spawned on the wedding of crazy sixties and Crumb 's bizarre mind. More know due to the cover of Janis Joplin 's Lp Cheap Thrills nd by the bumper sticker " Keep on trucking Crumb was what usetd to be called contestatory. He meant to comics what Jimi Hendrix meant to music, he even did a comic version of one Hendrix song, Purple Haze
After the initial works, Crumb did some stories with his wife he did the male characters; her, the female ones, and left behind the themes he were working at so far, dedicating to blues and comic book versions of literary works. Today, he is one of the most complete north american artists, a chronist of his time, a re-creator of the comics medium and a major influence on the work of Peter Bagge Daniel Clowes Dave Sim and Eddie Campbell

Name at birth: Robert Crumb Robert Crumb is a leading figure in the history of American underground comics. As a child he spent hours creating elaborate storybooks with his brothers (a group effort reminiscent of the childhood creations of and her sisters). In 1968 he began publishing Zap Comics, the series often credited with spurring the underground comics movement in America. Crumb's cartoon "Keep on Truckin'" an image of big-footed hipsters in a cheerful strut became a popular counter-culture symbol, popping up on posters and T-shirts (most produced without Crumb's consent). He also drew a famous album cover for the band Big Brother and the Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin ). Other Crumb characters include Flakey Foont, Angelfood McSpade, Devil Girl, and the irascible, bearded Mr. Natural. Fritz the Cat, Crumb's comically randy feline, was the star of an X-rated 1972 movie by animator Ralph Bakshi. Crumb , a 1995 documentary by Crumb's friend Terry Zwigoff, brought the cartoonist renewed notoriety and made him a mainstream figure.

    "R. Crumb and his Cheap Suit Serenaders" (CSS) are a loosely organized string band playing songs from the 1920s and (occasionally) modern songs styled after the songs of the 20s. They recorded three albums in the 70s and occasionally are active today, though usually without Mr. Crumb who lives in France.

    November 13, 2007 ROBERT Crumb , famed for such raunchy, X-rated comics as "Fritz the Cat" and "Mr. Natural," says women despise his art - and he doesn't blame them. In "R. Crumb's Sex Obssessions" (Taschen), he writes: "I love drawing pictures of big, well-built ladies getting theirs. I get deeply involved in it, lost in it, I thrill myself . . . I know it's often offensive. It sends most women fleeing in the opposite direction, disgusted, angry, indignant. I have very few female fans. I can't hold it against women for being repelled by my crazy sex drawings." next item adsonar_placementId=1317425;adsonar_pid=871771;adsonar_ps=-1;adsonar_zw=400;adsonar_zh=250;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com';

    Executive summary: Weirdo Zap Comix It was his oldest brother Charles Crumb, more than Robert, who loved comics as a kid, and forced his little brother to start drawing comics at age 3. Robert grew up liking Pogo and Donald Duck , and loving Harvey Kurtzman 's Mad Magazine . At 19, Crumb got a job as a profession illustrator at American Greetings card company, where he worked for Tom Wilson, who went on to draw Ziggy . For greetings cards, though, they wanted Crumb to draw "cute", so he submitted his grotesque stuff to magazines, and Kurtzman, then at Help! , bought one, and evolved into a mentor and friend. Crumb made his fame underground in the 1960s, with "Fritz the Cat" and, inspired by LSD, "Mr. Natural". He moved to San Francisco in 1967, and became a recognized celebrity in hippie-occupied sections of the city. He says he never much liked hippies, though. Zap Comix pictured a strutting goofball with big feet and the caption "Keep on truckin'". It became a worldwide catchphrase, ubiquitous on T-shirts and bumper stickers, yet a judge later ruled that since Crumb hadn't filed the right paperwork, nobody owed him any royalties for "Keep on truckin'".
