bing crosby was the founding president of the Del Mar Turf Club. Dorothy Lamour visited bing crosby s track at Del Mar July 29, 1938
"Where the Turf Meets the Surf" In 1936 the 22nd Agricultural District purchased 320 acres on the San Dieguito River as a permanent home for the county fair. Bing Crosby, a horse enthusiast, was approached about organizing a meet at Del Mar. He convinced his Hollywood friends to raise the money to build the track and they signed a 10-year lease. On July 3, 1937 the Del Mar Turf Club opened to the public. Crosby himself welcomed the first guests through the turnstiles. The first race was off at 2:24 p.m. and was auspiciously (or suspiciously!) won by Crosby's own horse, High Strike. During the late 1930s and early 1940s, Del Mar was known for its relaxed atmosphere and celebrity visitors. Crosby and his partner Pat O'Brien, were visited by their buddies Jimmy Durante, Douglas Fairbanks, Mickey Rooney, W.C. Fields, Dorothy Lamour, and Ann Miller who came to Del Mar to play. Crosby immortalized Del Mar in song with his lyrics of "where the turf meets the surf." Search Site Site Outline

Crosby was an underrated actor. He was pitch-perfect as the drunk, passive-aggressive, fading star in "The Country Girl" with Grace Kelly and William Holden. For Christmas cheer, "Holiday Inn" is fun, as long as you can get around the scene where he sings in blackface. December 23, 2007 10:40 PM

He is sort of forgotten now. Weird how someone who was number one would now be forgotten. I have a Life magazine which has a graph of who were the top actors during Life's initial ascent. Bing is in the top five for at least five years in a row, if not number one. He is smooth as silk. Yes his son told another story... E December 24, 2007 8:36 AM

    Bing Crosby and David Bowie
This evening my husband bought the CD Now That's What I Call Xmas . It's a compilation of Christmas songs that are popular in Britain. It includes one of our long time favorites Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth
One of the more unusual moments in pop music history took place Sept. 11, 1977, when the leading American singer of the first half of the Twentieth Century met and performed with one of the more innovative musicians of the last half of the Century. Bing Crosby was in London on a concert tour and to tape his yearly TV Christmas special. It was Bing's idea that he should have a young star as a guest on his TV show. Someone suggested David Bowie.
The idea was that he and Bowie would perform "The Little Drummer Boy" as a duet. Bowie felt the song did not showcase his voice very well, so the writers added "Peace on Earth," which suited Bowie's voice quite well. The two met for the first time on the morning of the taping, rehearsed for an hour and finished their duet in only three takes.
Bing died a month later. The public did not see their performance until after his death.

A sideby-side numerical comparison of their accomplishments.
THE ELVIS PRESLEY - BING CROSBY COMPARISON PAGE Because Elvis Presley dominated the entertainment world in the second half of the 20th century to the same degree Bing Crosby did in the first half it is inevitable that comparisons between these two giants be made. This page is intended to provide data about both performers to make such comparisons easy, specifically regarding their relative popularities during their careers. No conclusions are made as to which was the greatest, most influential, most popular, or most successful personality. Those are left to the reader. I am not trying to imply with these lists that Bing Crosby is as popular as Elvis. He isn't even close. All this list is trying to do is provide a sense of how popular each performer was in his own era. Musically, for the purposes of this page, in his own era is defined to mean the years over which the artist had new songs appearing in the top 30 popular music hits as listed in Billboard's charts: 1931-1957 for Crosby, 1956-1977 for Elvis. For movie data it goes to their last live-starring theatrical release. Most of the information on this page comes from The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits, 8th Edition (2004)
