Harry Lillis Crosby
(1903-1977) Singer/Actor - Films, Radio H arry Lillis Crosby is one of the most popular entertainers of the 20th Century. Born May 3, 1903 in Tacoma, Washington, Harry was the fourth of seven children. He recieved the nickname Bing from a friend, Valentine Hobart, because they were both interested in a comic strip, The Bingville Bugle. Bing's idol was Al Jolson, and he helped resurrect Al's career in the late '40s. After college, Bing was signed up by Paul Whiteman, and joined his band. Bing made his first record, "I've Got the Girl," in 1926. Two months later he cut a couple more records with Whiteman. Bing got started in films with the Whiteman band, in The King of Jazz . Bing was supposed to have a solo, but ended up in jail for drunken driving the night before, and so was not able to do the solo. Whiteman let go of Bing after the film was finished. Soon after, Mack Sennett, creator of the Keystone Kops, signed Bing. With Sennett he made six two-reelers. These were highly successful, and lead to Bing's first feature film, The Big Broadcast . By now Bing was an established network radio star.
Big Broadcast established Bing as a motion picture actor, and lead to more films, many of which featured lame plots, only needed to get Bing to sing. By the '40s, however, he began to get better films. By 1940, he and Bob Hope were engaged in a fictional radio feud. Paramount, which had contracts with both men, decided to team them up in

Bing Crosby
The incomparable Bing Crosby had perhaps the most successful career of any artist in the twentieth century. As both singer and actor he entertained the public for more than forty years and spent much of that time on top of the charts, both music and box office. His smooth, rich voice is instantly recognizable by all and capable of subtle emotions that few other singers could match. He was America's favorite crooner, recording everything from ballads to swing to blues, and his lovable personality shone through both over the airwaves and on the silver screen. Born in Tacoma, Washington, on May 3, 1903

    About
Bing Crosby was a revolutionary figure in music he adopted singing to the microphone, brought jazz into white pop, and was our first multimedia star (radio, records, movies, TV). He crooned it all from Hawaiian to Country but was at his best on easygoing, improv heavy rhythm tunes. Crosby always paid his respects to Louis Armstrong (and loved working with him) but much of his best jazz recordings are currently out of print. This is a shame because to paraphrase Tony Bennett, Crosby was the first cool white man in American music.

Cause of Death - Heart Attack on golf course. Harry Lillis "Bing" Crosby was an American singer and actor whose career lasted from 1926 until his death in 1977. He was one of the most successful performing artists of the 20th century.
Harry Lillis Crosby was born in Tacoma, Washington on May 3, 1903 in a house that his father built (1112 North J Street, Tacoma, Washington). His family later moved to Spokane, Washington in 1906 to find work. He was the fourth of seven children - five boys Larry (1895-1975), Everett (born 1896), Ted (born 1900) and Bob (1913-1993) and two girls Catherine (born 1905) and Mary Rose (born 1907) - born to English-American Harry Lowe Crosby (1871-1950), a bookkeeper and Irish-American Catherine Harrigan (1873-1964), (affectionately known as Kate), the daughter of a builder from County Mayo in Ireland. His paternal ancestors Thomas Prence and Patience Brewster were born in England and immigrated to the U.S. in the 17th century; Brewster's family came over on the Mayflower.
It should be noted that Bing Crosby had no birth certificate and that his birth date was shrouded in mystery until his childhood Roman Catholic church in Tacoma, Washington, released the baptismal records that revealed his date of birth. In 1910 Crosby was forever renamed. The six-year-old Harry Lillis discovered a full page feature in the Sunday edition of Spokesman-Review, "The Bingville Bugle." The "Bugle", written by humorist Newton Newkirk, was a parody of a hillbilly newsletter complete with gossipy tidbits, minstrel quips, creative spelling and mock ads. A neighbor, 15-year-old Valentine Hobart, shared Crosby's enthusiasm for the "bugle," and noting Crosby's laugh, took a likening to him and called him Bingo from Bingville. The last vowel was dropped and the name shortened to Bing, which stuck.

Bing had no birth certificate, and the actual date of his birth was shrouded in mystery until after his death. Even Bing's immediate family assigned at least 3 different years for his birth. During most of his lifetime Bing celebrated May 2, 1904 as his birthdate. After Bing's death in 1977, a Tacoma priest disclosed Roman Catholic Church baptismal records that revealed Bing's actual birthdate. Contemporary newspaper reports of Bing's birth also confirm the date as May 3, 1903. Bing had 4 brothers, Laurence Earl "Larry" (1895-1975), Everett Nathaniel (1896-1966), Edward John "Ted" (1900-1973), and George Robert "Bob" (1913-1993). Bing also had two sisters, Catherine Cordelia (1904-1972) and Mary Rose (1906-1990). Bing's family moved from Tacoma to Spokane, Wash., in 1906. They rented a house at 303 E. Sinto Ave. Young Harry "Bing" enrolled at Webster Grade School on East Sharp Ave. There Bing developed a friendship with neighbor, Valentine Hobart. The two boys shared an interest in a comic strip called the Bingville Bugle, whose leading character was named Bingo. Bingo had protruding ears like young Crosby, so Valentine began calling Harry "Bingo". This caught on amongst Crosby's other childhood friends. Eventually the name was shortened to "Bing." His mother continued to call him Harry until her death in 1964.

BING CROSBY Considerable confusion exists regarding Bing Crosby’s birth date; the singer himself, in his autobiography, Call Me Lucky , would state, "I’ve seen several dates listed for my birth in various publications, among them, 1901, 1903, and 1906. I’d like to take 1906, but 1904 is the one I was stuck with." Baptismal entries at St. Patrick’s Church, combined with sister Catherine’s Tacoma birth certificate (October 3, 1904) indicate that he was born Harry Lillis Crosby on May 2, 1903 at the family’s home on 1112 North J Street. He was fourth child of Harry Lowe and Catherine Helen Crosby (maiden name Harrigan). Besides Catherine and Bing, other offspring included Laurence Earl (Larry), January 3, 1895; Everett Nathaniel, April 5, 1896; Henry Edward (Ted), July 30, 1900; Mary Rose, May 3, 1906; and George Robert (Bob), August 25, 1913. The Harrigan family had Irish-Catholic roots; Catherine, known as Kate, was born February 7, 1873, in Stillwater, Minnesota. Her family would later migrate to Tacoma, where she met her future husband. The Crosby family appears to have been of Danish origin; their forebears were allegedly Vikings who settled the British Isles during the eighth through tenth centuries. Bing’s brother Larry found that the
