If there is a filmmaker who has accurately captured the pathological undercurrents of late 20th Century terminal life: institutionalised disaster areas, deviant sexual impulses spinning out of control and the rise of a Dark Culture, it is truly Canadian David Cronenberg. Cronenberg established a strong following with his early theatrical films Shivers Rabid (1976) and The Brood (1979). Like Dario Argento, George A. Romero, John Carpenter and David Lynch, Cronenberg has used familiar 'visceral horror' film motifs like urban alienation and body mutation to reach art-house audiences. But he has never seen himself as a strictly horor director, and has viewed his films as highly personal meditations. Cronenberg's influence is often unacknowledged: for example, elements of his early films clearly inspired parts of Ridley Scott's Alien It was the pre-cog mutant hero of Scanners (1980) which really signalled that Cronenberg was daring to intelligently explore realms that others left unventured. Cronenberg used 1950s pulp SF themes in a thinly veiled allegory hinting at the Thalidomide tragedies and contemporary pharmaceutical experimentation.

Censors do what only psychotics do... they confuse reality with illusion. A friend of mine saw 'Videodrome', said he really liked it, and added, you know someday they're going to lock you up. [Suicide] ...it's probably the only way we can give our death a meaning, because otherwise it's completely arbitrary. I don't have a moral plan. I'm a Canadian." Cronenberg is a talented, and in my opinion underated Canadian director. Directing films such as Shivers, Rabid, Naked Lunch and Dead Ringers , we see Cronenberg's unimitable style. He gives us an insight into his world of the terrifying and truly surreal. Although many of Cronenberg's films have a slightly tacky and dated feel to them (mainly due to the virtually non-existant Canadian film industry) you cannot ignore his true talent and skill for grabbing the audience and involving then fully in the movie. David Cronenberg: Filmography This list includes his early short films, those he made in France in 1971, his TV work and his commercials.

Introduction
Max Renn runs Civic-TV, a cable softcore / hardcore channel. His satellite-pirate partner intercepts a coded transmission containing a snuff-show. Very simple, very cheap, very real. No story, just torture and murder. The trace of this transmission leads to a man called professor Brian O'Blivion (!). After this, Max begin to suffer from sporadic hallucinations. Soon he understands that the hallucinations are triggered by a tumor inside his head, which is caused by massive doses of coded signals, hidden in the Videodrome transmissions. It shows later, that the tumor is in fact another organ, controlled by a company called Spectacular Optical. "The television screen is the retina of the mind's eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears in the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality, and reality is less than television."

Eccentric film-maker DAVID CRONENBERG shocked his cast and crew on the set of new movie A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, by publicly performing sex scenes with his wife. The director hoped his explicit displays of affection with his wife would help stars VIGGO MORTENSEN and MARIA BELLO, who play man and wife in the film, feel more comfortable during their sex scenes together. But, instead, the Cronenbergs just left everyone on the set stunned. THE LORD OF THE RINGS star Mortensen says, "There's a couple of fairly racy sex scenes in the movie... between Maria Bello and myself. David, trying to be helpful, as usual, thought it might be a good idea to call up his wife and have her come down to the set. "The crew and Maria and I just sat and watched while he and his wife got into something comfortable - nothing - and they started to say, 'We want you to (do this).' Maria and I were both going, 'OK, we get it.'

David Cronenberg Biography
DAVID CRONENBERG Date of Birth: March 15, 1943
Born in Toronto, Ontario, David Cronenberg began writing gory short stories at an early age. He was fascinated by things like "watching praying mantises eating grasshoppers," and felt that his inclination towards gore set him apart from other youngsters. He studied science at the University of Toronto, switching later to literature. When a college friend made a short film, Cronenberg was "stunned, shocked and exhilarated" by the medium, and said to himself, "I’ve got to try this!" He made two short films, and in order to get funding from the Canada Council for a feature length film, pretended to be writing a novel. Money in hand, he made Stereo (1969), set at the fictitious Canadian Academy for Erotic Inquiry, followed by Crimes of the Future (1970), in which a dermatologist creates a condition that makes its victims indulge in bizarre fetishes and acts of homosexuality.
Cronenberg next moved to television, where he directed a number of documentaries, mostly featuring Toronto locales. The work earned him credibility as a director and put some money in his pockets. He went on to make another horror film, the gore-filled

(Photo: Peter Mountain/Focus Features) V iggo Mortensen thinks David Cronenberg was robbed. In 2005, A History of Violence received the best reviews of the year—“top tens, all that sort of thing”—and then it got passed over at the Oscars. “Now, when people see it on DVD, they get it,” Mortensen says. “They say, ‘Why didn’t that guy get Best Director?’” His totally unconcealed hope is that “maybe because [ Violence ] got him a wider audience, people will be ready to give him more credit for this one.” This one is Eastern Promises

His latest film, A History Of Violence, is an adaptation of a graphic novel. But whereas Sin City had little to say about the world we live in, Cronenberg's film intelligently explores, among other things, the effects of violence in our media saturated culture. Below, he talks about violence, the media and why A History Of Violence is not anti-American. Is A History Of Violence specifically about America?

The great David Cronenberg, director of the current "Eastern Promises" as well as classics like "Shivers," "The Brood," and "Naked Lunch" discusses his take on in-home movie viewing (and more) with MSN'S Sean Axmaker
David Cronenberg is not only one of the most interesting and intense filmmakers working today, he's also one of the most thoughtful and articulate directors to ever record a DVD commentary track. His commentaries on "A History of Violence," "Dead Ringers," "Videodrome," "The Fly," and even his early feature "Rabid" are observant, introspective and instructive, and he returns to the commentary booth for the DVD release of his latest film, "Eastern Promises," a dark crime thriller set in the London underworld of Russian gangsters and human trafficking. I spent so much time in our brief interview session discussing DVDs that I was cut off before even getting to the film, let alone the question that was really plaguing: Does Cronenberg use a DVD player, or can he simply insert discs directly into his body like James Woods in "Videodrome"? The answer to that will have to wait for another interview.

It’s kind of flattering and it’s OK.” The engaging Toronto director took some time recently at the Ritz-Carlton to debate the reasons why he took on his latest project, Eastern Promises , discuss the dangers of directing opera, and speculate on the Slavic looks of "No Ego Viggo" Mortensen. Music Viewings Books ... Viewings Eastern Promises (dir. David Cronenberg) Eastern Promises (dir. David Cronenberg) By Balaji Srinivasan Sunday, 02 December 2007 Goodness and dignity are virtues that are better not spoken of in the same breath as the mafia. At the very outset, David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises establishes this world as one of mobsters, henchmen and cold blooded murderers. A barber has his russian client's throat slashed and a woman who's been severely abused dies giving birth to a child, both being acts of the russian underworld operating in London. The russian is coldly dispatched into the waters by the mafioso while the child is taken into custody by the midwife, determined to protect it. Neither killing is justified, moreso because both are brought about by ridiculously silly acts completely unbecoming of the sort of cold calculating mafia that we believe operates and this is precisely why the redemptive forces at work by the end of the film seem baffling.
One of the mafioso is Kirill (Vincent Cassell), son of the mafia boss Semyon (Armin Muellher Stahl) who's operating under the guise of a restaurateur. He is accompanied by Nikolay (Viggo Mortenson), his fiercely loyal accomplice, who's cool headed and whom the boss respects for his wisdom a lot more than his son. The midwife is Anna (Naomi Watts), a second generation russian immigrant living with her uncle Stepan, an ex KGB veteran with strong views on race and heritage. Anna discovers the dead woman's diary and in an attempt to get it translated, finds her way to Semyon through one of her business cards. The diary contains damning evidence against Semyon and his son and the boss tries to eliminate all traces of it.
