Biography
At age 16, Jeanne Crain won a beauty contest as "Miss Long Beach" and became a model; the next year she was named "Camera Girl of 1942," leading to contacts in Hollywood. She debuted on screen in 1943 in The Gang's All Here , beginning a starring career that lasted through the '50s. She rose to prominence through her performance in Henry Hathaway's Home in Indiana (1944). Crain was frequently cast as the "girl next door," and was generally employed to be a "pretty face" in the midst of light films, but occasionally she got more serious roles, as in Pinky (1949) in which she played a black girl passing for white; for that performance she was nominated for a "Best Actress Oscar," repeating a nomination she got for her role in Margie (1946). Her career waned in the '60s, but she continued to appear in films through the '70s. ~ All Movie Guide

CONTACT US Newsreel In Remembrance Articles ... Editorials In Remembrance: Jeanne Crain Jeanne Crain, the actress best known for her Academy Award nominated performance in the controversial 1949 film Pinky has passed away on Monday, December 15, 2003. She was 78. Born May 25, 1925 in Barstow, California, Crain moved to Los Angeles with her family as a small child. As a teen she participated in many beauty pageants. After winning Camera Girl of 1942, she was approached by 20 th Century Fox with a standard studio contract. Craine’s first role was an uncredited part in the 1943 Busby Berkely musical The Gang’s All Here . However, after successfully landing leading roles in Home In Indiana In The Meantime, Darling and Winged Victory (all 1944) the studio renegotiated her contract for better terms making Craine one of the leading stars at the studio. Craine’s slender figure and lovely features also made her a leading pin-up girl among GI’s during World War II and the post-War years. Reportedly her fan mail was second only to that of pin-up queen Betty Grable. In 1949 director Elia Kazan cast her in Pinky , where she played a light-skinned southern black woman who passed herself off in society as white. It was a powerful performance in a powerful movie made at a time when Hollywood shied away from such progressive racial material. Ironically, although many black actresses campaigned for the role, including Lena Horne, studio head Darryl F. Zanuck demanded that a white actress play the part. The film was highly praised by critics but raised controversy in the South with its plotline of a white man wanting to marry Pinky despite knowing her race. The film was banned in Marshall, Texas, tough the town’s film censoring ordinance was later declared unconstitutional by the U. S. Supreme Court.

    JEANNE CRAIN
An Actress Who Was The Girl Next Door And So Much More!
Jeanne Crain was born in Barstow, California on May 25, 1925. The daughter of a high school English teacher and his wife, Jeanne was moved to Los Angeles not long after her birth after her father got another teaching position in that city. While in junior high school, Jeanne played the lead in a school production which set her on the path to acting. When she was in high school, Jeanne was asked to take a screen test to appear in a film by Orson Welles. Unfortunately, she didn't get the part, but it did set her sights on being a movie actress. The beautiful teenager then embarked to achieve her dream. Jeanne won several beauty contests with a win in the Miss California contest which sent her to the Miss America Pageant. Although she didn't win the main prize, she did place in the final five. After her high school career, Jeanne enrolled at UCLA to study drama. At the age of 18, Jeanne won a bit part in Fox Studio's film entitled THE GANG'S ALL HERE (1943) and a small contract. Her next film saw Jeanne elevated to a more substantial part in HOME IN INDIANA the following year, which was filmed in neighboring Kentucky. The movie was an unquestionable hit. On the strength of that box-office success, Jeanne was given a raise and star billing, as Maggie Preston, in the next film of 1944, IN THE MEANTIME, DARLING. Unfortunately, the critics not only roasted the film, but singled out Jeanne's performance in particular. She rebounded nicely in her last film of the year, WINGED VICTORY. The audiences loved it and the film was profitable.
