William H. Cosby Jr.
During his 35-year career, Bill Cosby has taken him from nightclub comic to international personality and America's most beloved humorist. William H. Cosby Jr. was born in 1937 to William and Anna Cosby in Philadelphia's Germantown Hospital. In school, he met the classmates who would one day people his comedy routines as Fat Albert, Old Weird Harold, Dumb Donald and many others. Although he developed a deep appreciation for education as an adult, Cosby left high school and joined the U.S. Navy. Four years later, he entered Temple University on an athletic scholarship. It was while he was working in nightclubs during college that his natural sense of humor prompted friends to suggest that he create a comedy routine. Bolstered by an enthusiastic response, by 1962 he was performing at New York's Gaslight Cafe in Greenwich Village. The next year, he was invited to perform on "The Tonight Show." Cosby has become a television staple ever since. His breakout role came on "I Spy" with Robert Culp in 1965-68. Cosby won two of his five Emmys portraying an undercover CIA agent. He also became the first African-American actor to star in a weekly television dramatic series. A string of hit comedy albums, television shows and books followed, including "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids," which ran for 12 years. The animated series showed kids from a poor neighborhood who dealt with problems that all children face, from bullies to the arrival of a new sibling. Cosby appeared at the beginning and end of each show to reinforce the positive messages, encouraging children to talk about their problems with friends and family.

64. Biography - William Henry "Bill" Cosby, Jr.

William Henry " Bill" Cosby, Jr.
Superstar, comedian, athlete, and jazz musician William Henry Cosby, Jr., served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1961, trained as a hospital corpsman and worked mostly with veterans of the Korean War. He also ran track on the Navy's team, as well as played basketball and football, and completed his high-school diploma. It was in the Navy that he came to accept the fact of his above-average intelligence and concluded that not to do something with it would be a "mental sin." On the strength of his naval experience, in 1961 Cosby won a scholarship to Temple University, Philadelphia. However, it was also during his Navy years that Cosby experienced for the first time the insult of being refused in a restaurant along with the rest of the guys. His travels with the U.S. Navy track team took him into the Deep South, where he was forced to enter restaurants through the back door and eat in the kitchen. This outrageous practice persisted in the South at least through the 1960s, and even though the kitchen offered better service, better food, and more of it, for a man born and raised in the North, it was particularly appalling. Fortunately, he never had to ride a bus and face the insolence of being told to sit at the back of it. Sailor Bill Cosby played basketball for the Navy.

Inequality at the Starting Gate A S What to Expect: The Toddler Years at their baby showers. But these explanations shy away from the one reason that renders others moot: poor parents raise their kids differently, because they see being parents differently. They are not simply middle-class parents Social scientists have long been aware of an immense gap in the way poor parents and middle-class parents, whatever their color, treat their children, including during the earliest years of life. On the most obvious level, middle-class parents read more to their kids, and they use a larger vocabulary, than poor parents do. They have more books and educational materials in the house; according to Inequality at the Starting Gate , the average white child entering kindergarten in 1998 had 93 books, while the average black child had fewer than half that number. All of that seems like what you would expect given that the poor have less money and lower levels of education.

Looking to see what was funny, I saw that the butt of his joke was me. "Excuse me?" I replied "Why you acting like an herb?" Personally, I got enough life experiences to tell you that racism is still a problem in America. Two things that have happened in the past several years detail the madness that can happen when we turn our heads away from the destruction we do to each other. The first was an epidemic of shootings of students of majority-black colleges by thugs, solely for the fact that they went to school, and the general apathy by black leadership on the issue. The sad thing that you can deduce from those incidents is that those thugs were smart enough not to shoot white students or black students in majority-white schools, because they knew that that few things encourage less emotion from Americans that black people killing other black people in black neighborhoods. If even one black person was shot at by a white thug, it would be the nexus on a national moratorium on race relations, with Jesse and Al leading the charge. But because there are no evil white people to rage against, nothing is said or mentioned.

The new media.
By Matt Rosenberg T he philosophical conundrum is a familiar one: If a tree falls in the forest, but no one is there to see or hear it, did it really happen? Now let's put a modern and slightly nuanced twist on the question. Suppose that at an NAACP gala to celebrate the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education school-desegregation case, Bill Cosby lambastes some lower-income black parents for irresponsibility , and the Washington Post reports on it.
Post columnist Richard Leiby issued his two-days-later scoop on Wednesday, May 19 Instead, there was a bit of a curious silence from most print-media outlets. It was mainly talk radio and a host of bloggers, including the widely read education writer and former newspaper columnist Joanne Jacobs , who ran with the story. In a follow-up column drawn from a tape recording of the speech, the Post 's Leiby published even more pungent remarks by Cosby. Coz took aim at babies making babies, promiscuity, street fashion, and what he described as phony pride in African roots. (Here's one of my blog

Activists Say "Black Man" Portrayals Ignore a Crisis
Bill Cosby , the star speaker on a panel of experts, lambasted the Washington Post Tuesday for its continuing "Being a Black Man" series as painting too upbeat a picture. Kaiser forum came complete with logo. "I'm not interested in hearing that things aren't as bad as they seem. They're horrible," Cosby said at "Paths to Success: A Forum on Young African-American Men," sponsored by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the Post and Harvard University. The three groups jointly conducted a survey that, in June, began the Post series. Among other findings, eight in 10 black men said they were satisfied with their lives, and six in 10 reported that it was a "good time" to be a black man in the United States. "The Washington Post ran a clip and then they edited it and they had in what they wanted us to see these men saying," he said. "Unless I missed it, I heard not one black man say anything about being a father. I heard not one black man say, 'my responsibility,' not one. The edited version of these people with a camera on a drive-by – I'm looking to media. I don't like people who see and can't tell the truth. . . . A man tells me, 'It's not as bad as it seems.' I don't want to hear that shit."

The 67-year-old comedian—who became America's Dad in the 1980s and America's Granddad more recently—has launched a series of surprising assaults on the pathologies of low-income blacks. "They think they're hip. They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere," he said in Chicago at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition and Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference on July 1. This followed an attack launched at the NAACP's Brown v. Board of Education

Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living.
People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around. The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what? And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics.
I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was 2? Where were you when he was 12? Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn't know that he had a pistol? And where is the father? Or who is his father?
