Executive summary: Directed The Godfather Francis Ford Coppola had polio as a boy, leaving him bedridden for large periods of his childhood, and allowing him to indulge his imagination with homemade puppet theater productions. Using his father's 8mm movie camera, he began making movies when he was 10. While attending college, Coppola was hired by low-budget movie maestro Roger Corman , and his first assignment was to re-script, dub, and re-edit a Russian science fiction film Corman had purchased, to make it appropriate for drive-in audiences. The film, originally titled Nebo zovyot in Russian, was retitled Battle Beyond the Sun , and it was awful, but Coppola was delighted to be working in the movie business. On his own, Coppola wrote and directed a few porn films very mild by today's standards while earning Corman's trust. Coppola was the nominal director of

Wealth takes many forms, but this rune generally represents the value that is purely material or monetary in nature. Alternatively, this rune is deeply associated with Frey, and hence can be the harbinger of fertility and children. Birth Mates

Web Resources Most critiques of Francis Ford Coppola's career interweave film criticism with biography and produce an account of a wasted genius, a failed wunderkind, a director who had a few great years, produced some magnificent movies, but slid further and further downhill as time passed. With the publication of this article, I am pleased to report that any and all announcements of Coppola's artistic demise are not only premature, but flat-out wrong. What actually happened was that Francis Ford Coppola did what any great and original artist does: he went in directions unanticipated by his critics. For his transgressions Coppola was made to pay over and over again. But not here. I want to praise Coppola, not bury him, and while I can only touch on a portion of his genius, I hope I can inspire others to look carefully at a body of work that is one of the most significant of recent times. For me, Coppola is the most talented and interesting filmmaker to come to prominence in the 1970s. He began his career (as many filmmakers did) by working with Roger Corman. His first film

At a very young age he moved with his family to New York. As a child he was a mediocre student but was very much interested in technology and engineering; so much, in fact, that his friends nicknamed him “Science”. At the age of fifteen he earned a scholarship to the New York Military Academy based on his ability to play the tuba. He didn’t ever feel comfortable in the Academy and ran away after a year and a half to wander the streets of Manhattan for a few days. Coppola later earned another scholarship to Hofstra University at Hempstead, Long Island for his amazing ability to write plays. There he excelled in the drama department, writing various plays and musicals for the students to perform. In 1960 Coppola enrolled in the University of California at Los Angeles Film School. At UCLA, Coppola directed a short horror film called “The Two Christophers” inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s William Wilson . He also directed “Ayamonn the Terrible”, a film about a sculptor’s nightmares coming to life. But his first significant film experience came from an apprenticeship with “Z-movie” filmmaker, Roger Corman.

    A Biography by Jon Matthew
Francis Ford Coppola is a director, producer, composer, and writer who has had more failures (One From The Heart, The Cotton Club, Gardens of Stone, Finian's Rainbow, and Jack) than successes (Patton, The Godfather Trilogy, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now). He has survived because his successes, while few in number, have been profitable and have thus outweighed his failures at the box-office. In addition to money Patton, The Godfather Trilogy, The Conversation, and Apocalypse Now have earned fourteen Academy Award nominations and five Oscars for Coppola. Coppola also has three films on AFI's Top 100 Films with The Godfather: Part II at number 32, Apocalypse Now at 28, and The Godfather at 3.
After recovering, he enrolled and was accepted to the New York Military Academy at Cornwallon-Hudson based on his proficiency in playing the tuba. He detested the schools emphasis on sports and ran away to Manhattan after eighteen months. Returning to high school, he continued to play the tuba and commenced writing plays. His aptitude as a playwright gained him a scholarship to Hofstra University where his brother had studied. As one of the Hofsta's top students he earned a reputation as a loudmouth. He graduated from Hofstra with a BA in Theater Arts in 1959 but still had no desire to be a director. His attitude changed quickly when he saw Sergei Eisenstein's Ten Days That Shook The World (1927). He later said of the film, "On Monday I was in the theater, and on Tuesday I wanted to be a film-maker" (Bergan, Francis Ford Coppola p. 16).

    Coppola, Francis Ford
Movie director; born in Detroit, Mich. A disciple of RogerCorman, he began directing in 1961. The phenomenal success of The Godfather (1972) led him to set up his own production company and studios, but most of his subsequent movies fared poorly with either the critics or the public, and the colossal expense of his Vietnam War film, Apocalypse Now (1979), all but drove him into bankruptcy. He would recover to continue directing his own movies and supporting those by other young filmmakers but the baroque extravagance of movies such as Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) did little to advance his reputation. His Oscars include awards for Patton (1970, for screenwriting) and three for The Godfather Part II (1974, for direction, screenwriting, and best picture). BIOGRAPHY(r) Online Database Francis Ford Coppola is best known as a five-time Oscar-winning director, writer and producer. He won his first Oscar at age 31 for the screenplay Patton, which he co-wrote with Edmund H. North. His impressive body of work includes directorial credits for 19 films; epics such as the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, and most recently Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992, and Jack, starring Robin Williams and Bill Cosby, due for release in August 1996. Coppola, who won the Palm d'Or at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for The Conversation and Apocalypse Now, presided as president of the jury for the 1996 festival this May. His San Francisco-based film company, American Zoetrope, develops and produces television projects and films such as 1995's Don Juan DeMarco and My Family.
