He also received an Honorary Award from the Academy in 1961. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Cooper among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time, ranking at No. 11.
Early Days
He was born Frank James Cooper in Helena, Montana in 1901, but as a child lived in Dunstable, England, with his mother Alice, and elder brother Arthur Le Roy (1895 - 1982). The two boys attended the prestigeous Dunstable School between 1910 and 1913.
The Winning of Barbara Worth
When he was thirteen years old he was injured in an automobile accident, and had to move to his father's cattle ranch in Montana to recuperate. It was here where he learned his considerable riding skills.
After high school Cooper attendedn Helena, Montana and Iowa College, Grinnell, Iowa. His first stage experience was during high school and college. Afterwards, he worked as an extra for one year before getting a part in a two reeler by Hans Tissler. Eileen Sedgwick was his first leading lady. He changed his name to Gary in 1925, following the advice of his agent, who felt it evoked the "rough, tough" nature of Gary, Indiana.

born May 7, 1901, Helena, Mont., U.S. died May 13, 1961, Los Angeles The son of a Montana Supreme Court justice, Cooper left Grinnell College, Iowa, in 1924 and went to Hollywood, where he earned a living as a cowboy extra and stunt rider. His agent changed his name, and he advanced to leading parts in modestly budgeted westerns that were often box-office hits. A major stroke of luck was his being cast in The Winning of Barbara Worth (1926). He rose to stardom in The Virginian Morocco A Farewell to Arms Design for Living The Lives of a Bengal Lancer Desire The Plainsman Beau Geste (1939), and The Westerner Cooper often played a brave, laconic, and somewhat reticent man whose upright character compels him to perform heroic actions that he does not purposely seek. He typified the role of the unsophisticated man fighting for what he thought was right in two films directed by Frank Capra, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town

THE PRIDE OF THE YANKEES Once a guide in Yellowstone National Park and an aspiring cartoonist, Gary Cooper began his movie career as an extra in many-a low-budget western and later went on to play starring roles in a variety of film genres, becoming one of Hollywood's most popular leading men for almost thirty years. By 1929, Cooper had graduated from bit parts to leading roles but was still playing primarily in westerns, among them Victor Fleming's THE VIRGINIAN (1929), an adaptation of Owen Wister's novel co-starring Walter Huston and Richard Arlen. As the title character and foreman of Box H Ranch, Cooper spars with his best friend Arlen for the affections of Mary Brian not complex, but classic. Gradually easing off his horse, Cooper was cast as a foreign legionnaire opposite cabaret singer Marlene Dietrich in her first Hollywood picture, MOROCCO (1930). Also starring Adolphe Menjou , the film received four Academy Award nominations.

After Cooper was already a major film star he became he became a convert to Catholicism. His daughter recalls that their family attended Catholic mass regularly prior to the time her father converted. From: Maria Cooper Janis, Gary Cooper Off Camera: A Daughter Remembers , Harry N. Abrams, Inc.: New York, NY (1999), page 64: We were often spoken of as "The Coopers" by our friends in Hollywood. Ours was a unique family togetherness that was obvious and operative. So many of the daily-life things we did were just like any other family's activities. But for us there was a plethora of extraordinary situations as well. Meeting with the pope, being introduced to the royal family in England, a wild late-night ride in Paris with the shah of Iranit was as glamorous as it sounds even today, but always tempered by the down-to-earth values of my parents. We had a number of family traditions, one of them being a Sunday swim in the ocean after Mass. My mother and I would wear our bathing suits under our clothes, then after church we'd zip up the street to our house in Brentwood, get Poppa, who had been studying or working in his gun room or catching forty more winks, pile the dogs in the car, and take off for Santa Monica.
