Stellar achievements land Eileen Collins leading mission role
By MARK CARREAU
If it was only a matter of time before a woman assumed command of an American space mission, then it was likely a foregone conclusion that the job would go to astronaut Eileen Collins. Driven by a lifelong love of flying, the 42-year-old Air Force colonel and test pilot spent the last 20 years overcoming a series of obstacles and professional challenges to position herself for a spot in aviation history. Monday, on the eve of the 30th anniversary of man's first walk on the moon, Collins will scramble aboard the space shuttle Columbia to set a milestone of her own and prepare her crew to blast off from the Kennedy Space Center with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. With the exception of Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova's 71-hour solo voyage in a small Vostok capsule in 1963, no woman has ever claimed dominion over a spacecraft. None has ever assumed command responsibility for the safety of an entire crew of space travelers, nor for the success of a mission as complex as Columbia's. Collins' crew will deploy the $1.55 billion Chandra X-ray Observatory, a large space telescope designed for the study of stellar explosions, galactic collisions and black holes. Together with its propulsion system, the Chandra observatory is the largest payload ever delivered to space by a shuttle.

Reading the short biographical piece on Col. Eileen Collins that NASA sent me, I was impressed. For one thing, she collects college degrees the way I collect CDs. And these degrees are in pretty challenging subjects: mathematics, science, economics, operations research, and space systems management. She’s a trained pilot and a pilot trainer, and she also was an associate professor of mathematics. Then there’s the small matter of being the first woman to pilot, and then command, a NASA Space Shuttle. Here’s what she had to say about her career as a Federal employee so far.

Open Letter to Commander Eileen Collins
Dear Commander Collins: Congratulations on a superb flight on STS-114. You are my newest hero and I just have to tell you all the reasons why in this letter. I hope you understand. First of all, you are the new meaning of "cool." You are only in space about 2 minutes and you start getting these off-putting messages. "Discovery, Houston (like who else would it be), we just looked at the video replay of the external tank during launch and something the size of a Denny's Grand Slam breakfast broke off and missed the orbiter's wing by about 12 nanometers." Your response: "Copy". My response would also have been a four letter word but not that one. Then they hit you with another one. "Discovery, Houston (bad news seems to arrive from the same place.) We just looked at the underside of the orbiter and it looks like my 6-year old nephew after eating a bag of Oreos." "Copy" was all you said. By now they could have stopped trying to faze you but that just wouldn't be in style. "Discovery, Houston, we noticed that the area underneath your window looks like an unmade bed. We've studied the situation and decided that it will probably be ripped to shreds during reentry and we think that's a good idea." My reply would have been "you wanna think that through one more time" but your reply was "Copy". The meeting with the Space Station crew must have been exciting but more so for them than for you. I think you look great anyways. What must you have looked like to two guys who have only seen each other for 4 months?

Meet Eileen Collins:
the First Female Shuttle Commander
UPDATE ON EILEEN!! In July 1999, U.S. Air Force Colonel Eileen Collins became the first woman to both command and land a space shuttle! The shuttle Columbia touched down with Eileen at the helm in a tricky nighttime landing at the Kennedy Space Center. It was only the 12th nighttime landing in shuttle history! The successful mission was short but the five-person crew released the powerful Chandra X-ray telescope into space in a high orbit. Now scientists will get a better view of the stars thanks to high-flying Colonel Collins who proves that, in space, as here on earth Girls Rule!!! Lynn b. At last! Space is now officially a gender-neutral place! On Thursday, March 5th, Air Force Lt. Col. Eileen Collins was named by First Lady, Hillary Rodham Clinton as the very first woman to command a U.S. space shuttle mission. Lt. Col. Collins will command the Columbia in December. Her mission? Lead the crew that will put a massive, X-Ray telescope into space.

A Great One Goes Away: Eileen Collins Bids NASA Adieu
CNN has been reporting, astronaut, pilot, scientist and adventurer Eileen Collins , 49, announced today she was resigning her position with NASA in order to spend more time with her family.
She can be commended for her loyalty to her family as she was loyal to this country, through its space program by being the first woman to pilot a shuttle , first pilot to link with Mir, first female commander in the 1999 Columbia mission to launch the Chandra X-Ray Telescope and for being( according to STS-93 Mission Specialist Michel Tognini and others ) a pretty nice person to hang around with.
Eileen Collins, we salute you! But, at least now there's room for the next record-breaking female astronaut...( Damaris , I'm looking at you...)

Deborah Dann still recalls the days when a space shuttle launch was a historic event that captured the imagination.
Provided
Space shuttle Commander Eileen Collins puts on a training version of the shuttle launch and entry suit in September before the start of a mission training session in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory near the Johnson Space Center. She is helped by United Space Alliance suit technician Mike Thompson. As launches became more routine over the years, public interest waned and complacency took over, Dann said. That all changed abruptly when the flagship of the shuttle fleet, Columbia, broke apart on re-entry more than two years ago, killing all seven astronauts aboard.
Dann will be among the legions of Americans who will watch more closely when the shuttle program finally resumes with the planned launch of Discovery in May.
And she will be watching with more than casual interest. Dann runs the Eileen Collins Observatory at Corning Community College. The observatory's namesake and the college's most well-known graduate will be in command when Discovery rockets into space May 15.

  • Autopen machines often vibrate when they are in use creating a very distinctive "shaky" signature. Click here to see Examples of shaky signatures that these machines often produce. Autopens come to an abrupt halt at the end of a letter and frequently leave a noticeable spot of ink at the ends of letters and words. Lines in the Autopen are of the same thickness. Autopens do not always create identical signatures, if the item being signed is moved accidentally (or deliberately) small differences will be noticeable in the final signature. Small variations from known Autopen patterns does not mean the signature is authentic, if - when you ignore the variation - other parts of the signature match the Autopen pattern exactly, then what you are looking at is an Autopen. One thing that must also be kept in mind is that the use of pens with thicker or narrower nibs will make them appear very different - until you examine them closely and compare them to known Autopen patterns.

Why Not Reach for the Stars
-by Julie The third time's a charm! July 23, 1999 marked a historic event. Thirty years after the Apollo 11 team first set foot on the moon, now, another first: When Columbia lifted off, it was under control of the first woman Space Shuttle Commander, Eileen Collins. This great event had been planned to take off on the very day of the anniversary of the first step on the moon. The crew was strapped in and ready to go. The final countdown ticked down the seconds: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6-"Cutoff!" And emergency halt was given as an indicator detected too much hydrogen at the base. The crew scrambled to shut off equipment and get out of the rocket filled with more than 500,000 gallons fuel. Then a few days later, weather halted the launch. They delays were a huge disappointment for all involved. But it does show that safety measures are in place. Then early Friday morning, the crew readied themselves for a third attempt. If this one failed, the mission would be delayed for at least another month. Excitement grew as the launch countdown passed the earlier stopping point, engines fired, and the heaviest payload in history lifted off toward space. Then a scary call - trouble! Collins indicated they had a fuel cell problem. Tense seconds passed as NASA examined the situation. Those that watched held their breath and tried not to remember events like the Challenger.
