A couple of the guys said, "Hey, let's go out and play golf this weekend." I joined them, having no idea what I was doing, but we had fun. I didn't take lessons until three years later. When She Plays: Between my husband, two children and my very intense job, I play golf six times a year at most, usually on vacation. Landing Point: I find similarities between the way I land a space shuttle and the way I hit a golf ball. I'm very careful about the way I'm holding the control stick and where my eyes are looking. In both, you have to pay attention to what you're doing with your hands.

NASA American astronaut, the first woman to pilot and, later, to command a U.S. space shuttle. Selected as an astronaut in 1990, Collins became the first woman pilot of a U.S. space shuttle in February 1995, serving on the orbiter Discovery for a rendezvous and docking mission to the Russian space station Mir. She piloted a second shuttle flight in May 1997, successfully docking the Atlantis with Mir to transfer personnel, equipment, and supplies. With hundreds of hours in space to her credit, Collins became the first woman to command a shuttle mission in July 1999, taking Columbia into Earth orbit to deploy the Chandra X-ray Observatory. After Columbia was destroyed on a subsequent flight in February 2003, the entire shuttle fleet was grounded until July 2005, when Collins commanded Discovery Discovery

    NASA Astronaut Eileen Collins retires
NASA Astronaut Eileen Collins, the first woman to command a space shuttle, has announced her retirement. Collins, the pilot of the shuttle Discovery's return to flight mission last year, plans to pursue private interests and spend more time with family.
"Eileen Collins is a living, breathing example of the best that our nation has to offer," said NASA Administrator Michael Griffin. "She is, of course, a brave, superb pilot and a magnificent crew commander. Beyond those qualities, she is both very bright and modestly self-effacing about that fact.
"And above all," added Griffin, "she is possessed of a quiet determination to attain the very highest levels of accomplishment. I am proud to know her and will greatly miss her at NASA."
A veteran of four space flights, Collins was selected as an astronaut in 1990 and went on to become the first woman selected as a pilot astronaut, the first woman to serve as a shuttle pilot and the first woman to command a U.S. spacecraft.

            What are these?
Thursday, 11 August 2005 Our most significant accomplishment is just getting the shuttle flying again. It's been two and a half years since Columbia, and we worked very hard to make sure that we didn't miss anything. We did miss some things, but we're learning and we're going to fix those things. When flying, I try to stay focused on the mission, but I did think about the Columbia mission. I wouldn't say that it was a distraction, I would say it was more of ... we're going to press on and get through this. I thought about them every day. I thought about what their experiences were - that we were having the same experience they had of just living in space.
