No Country For Old Men
Review
by Julie Rigg This movie I think has moved me above all others from this Boxing Day batch of fine films. It is bleak beyond bleak but I would also call it a masterpiece: a study of the changing moral compass in West Texas, which still in some ways today can call itself the American frontier. A study of an old style lawman, Ed Tom Bell, used to keeping the peace in a community which was rugged, but agreed on values, thrown into a case involving two million dollars, a car boot load of heroin, a former Vietnam vet, and a sociopathic drug baron who kills people using a compressed air cylinder and a cattle stun gun. It is Tommy Lee Jones's Sheriff, Ed Tom Bell, who articulates what now confronts a law keeper on a frontier where values were once understood. He tells a story, right at the prow of the film, about a young serial killer he sent to his death. Ed Tom is shrewd, and seasoned. He takes no foolish risks, he reads a situation pretty simply, and he actually wants to protect the folks in his care. But he no longer feels fast enough on his feet to deal with the new evil on the frontier. Not that the situation which confronts Ed Tom and, before him, Llewellyn Moss, is hard to read.

You know you're in the middle of a great suspense thriller when a perfectly judged edit instantly transforms you from observer to participant. In the blink of a frame you are suddenly inside the head of a character where you not only know what they are thinking, you can feel it. That happens a lot in No Country for Old Men , by far the best film the Coen brothers have made since Fargo Quirk-free, gag-free, mercifully irony-free and often word-free, the story unfolds in a style as cool as the Texas locale is dry, with the influence of Hitchcock shimmering through every meticulously crafted set-piece.

Nothing's certain but death and Texas in this violent crime thriller
    By John Beifuss Contact
Friday, November 23, 2007 One of the hazards of being a paid movie reviewer admittedly a small hazard compared to, say, the danger of electrocution faced by a telephone lineman is that you might want to change your mind about a movie after your review is on the record for all eternity, or at least until the Worldwide Internet Collapse of 2023. (Trust me: I had a dream.) This statement is intended simply to preface my admission that the jury of my mind is still out on "No Country for Old Men," the new feature from the Coen Brothers that, by and large, has been the most ecstatically received movie of 2007. People will be talking about Javier Bardem's portrayal of the otherworldly, "psychopathic killer" Anton Chigurh in "No Country for Old Men." Photos by Richard Foreman Miramax Films Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Bell in "No Country for Old Men."

You've gotta think he's got this in the bag... remember, though, that we said the same thing after Murphy ( Dreamgirls ) won this category last year, only to be upset at the Academy by the sentimental favorite, Arkin; Holbrook could be that guy this year. Best Supporting Actress

    RUBY DEE ( American Gangster
    THOUGHTS
I hate to say it... but I told ya so! (Kudos to Sasha Stone for calling this major upset, as well.) Nobody will argue that Dee gave a better best supporting performance than Blanchett or Ryan in American Gangster , but she has given a career of great performances, most at a time when people who looked like her could not get awards like this, so it's still a wonderful thing to see. (Genuine, but also tactically smart, invocation of her husband, the late, great Ossie Davis.)
