Andre Gide (a founding editor). Privately and
publicly they were friends and enemies, yet their
common interests nourished a friendship that endured
for forty years. However strong the sentiments that
caused sporadic quarrels between them, they were
constantly present in each other's lives from the
first time they met, in 1912.
The first excerpt is taken from Cocteau's book Souvenir Portraits (Paragon House, 1990) The second excerpt is taken from Truman Capote's book The Dogs Bark (New American Library, a Plume book: 1977 ) I had just published, in 1926, Le Cog et l'Arlequin . Gide took offense. He was afraid the young would turn away from his program and that he would lose electors. He called me up before him as a schoolmaster would call a recalcitrant pupil and read me an open letter addressed to me. I have received quite a few open letters. In Gide's I was described as a squirrel and Gide as a bear at the foot of the tree. I jumped over steps, and from branch to branch. In short, I was being reprimanded, and publicly. I told him I intended answering the open letter. He snorted, agreed, told me that nothing was richer or more instructive than such exchanges. It goes without saying that Jacques Riviere refused to publish my answer in the Nouvelle Revue Francaise , where Gide had published his letter. I confess mine was severe. Gide had no profit to draw from my answer except to answer it, which he did. He loved notes and counternotes, answers to answers. He replied to mine in

QTVR panorama: Chapel of Jean Cocteau
Posted by Xeni Jardin, July 3, 2003 7:41 AM permalink QTVR evangelist Hans Nyberg describes this full-screen panorama by photographer Antonio Moya "Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) is one of the most famous French artists from the last century. If he had lived today he would probably been called a multimedia artist. This brilliant artist was a poet, novelist, he wrote plays, articles, ballet, opera. He also made thousands of drawings, paintings, modelled clay, was a sculptor, and designed costumes. Most of us know him for the famous 1946 movie Beauty and the Beast La Belle et la Bete ). By many considered one of the best 10 movies ever made. He decorated many Chapelles in France and the Chapel Notre-Dame-de-Jerusalem also called Chapelle Cocteau was the last. He never got it finished and it was his friend and spiritual son, Edouard Dermi who finished his work. The floor is by the ceramist Roger Pelissier. It is located in the South of France at the village of Frejus." link to chapel QTVR Discuss

Jean Cocteau: The actual tragedies of life... The actual tragedies of life bear no relation to one's preconceived ideas. In the event, one is always bewildered by their simplicity, their grandeur of design, and by that element of the bizzare which seems inherent in them. Jean Cocteau

JEAN COCTEAU'S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST AND ORPHEUS
Madman Entertainment / available to buy seperately Often considered something of a poseur by his surrealist contemporaries in the 1920's Cocteau's legacy has managed to outlast them all; His film making was wildly eclectic, everything from features to documentaries, from directing to writing scripts to acting Cocteau liked to try it all; Away from the cameras there was an equal amount of eclecticism, novelist, poet, graphic artist and at one time manager of boxing legend Al Brown. Cocteau's reputation as a film maker of legend rests on just a few films, two of which Le Belle et La Bete (Beauty and the Beast) and Orpheus are just released by Madman. Beauty and the Beast was made in 1946 just after the close of world war II, Cocteau had remained in Paris throughout the German occupation (showcasing his forbidden play Les Parents Terribles whenever he got the opportunity) and Beast can be seen as a kind of release into fantasy after the privations of the war. Visually stunning and definitely not a child like version of a tale we are probably most familair with these days via Disney. Cocteau takes the storyt back to its origins, that of the tale told by Madame La Prince de Beaumont, its heavy on symbolism, Jean Marais for example plays both the beast and Belle's lover; Given the fairytale setting the movie feels curiously real, sets lit to look like a Vermeer painting and a solid looking Beasts castle. An amazing movie.

What do Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, and Edith Piaf all have in common? They played a part in the fantasy and reality of theatre's incorrigible child Jean Cocteau.
To understand Cocteau, Number Two in Les Fab Five series, one must delve into all aspects of his inexhaustible creativity. Jean Cocteau was the supreme multi-tasker avec panache mastering every arts discipline - painter, poet, novelist, and musician, set designer, actor, director, publisher, avant garde film pioneer, and noted playwright. Chigago's Journeymen Theatre Company's La Livre Blanc or The White Book and Broadway's 1995 revival Indiscretions are glowing tributes to Cocteau's work while New York's Jean Cocteau Repertory Theatre speaks for itself.
