Despite his achievements in virtually all literary and artistic fields, Cocteau insisted that he was primarily a poet and that all his work was poetry. As a leading member of the surrealist movement, which emphasized the role of the unconscious in artistic creation ( see Surrealism ), he had great influence on the work of others. Cocteau was born at Maisons-Laffitte, near Paris. Overindulged by his mother (his father committed suicide in 1898), he was a poor student, and his lack of motivation overshadowed his intellect. He eventually dropped out of school. At the age of 16, Cocteau met actor Edouard de Max, who launched him as a poet. At de Max's invitation, a fashionable audience attended a reading of Cocteau's poems in April 1908. His first volume of verse

Preamble (A Rough Draft For An Ars Poetica)

Quotations "Mystery has its own mysteries, and there are gods above gods. We have ours, they have theirs. That is what's known as infinity."
Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), French author, filmmaker. repr. In Collected Works, vol. 5 (1948). Anubis, in The Infernal Machine, act 2 (1932). "What is line? It is life. A line must live at each point along its course in such a way that the artist's presence makes itself felt above that of the model.... With the writer, line takes precedence over form and content. It runs through the words he assembles. It strikes a continuous note unperceived by ear or eye. It is, in a way, the soul's style, and if the line ceases to have a life of its own, if it only describes an arabesque, the soul is missing and the writing dies."

Author, poet, painter, sculptor, playwright, film maker,
stage director, actor and choreagrapher Jean Cocteau was born in Maisons Lafitte, Paris, and died 74 years later in the town of Milly La Foret, Fontainbleau. During his life Cocteau managed to write novels, poetry, plays and journals. He painted, drew, choreographed, directed, wrote and produced films and became accomplished in all these areas. He also designed postage stamps for the French government, stained-glass windows for churches, and fashions for the house of Schiaparelli. He was "probably the most versatile artist of the 20th Century." He also made a great number of drawings with a gay subject. We have collected them in the following pages. (Born Jean Maurice Eug¨ne Cl©ment Cocteau) French playwright, poet, novelist, filmmaker, scriptwriter, critic, essayist, librettist, and autobiographer.
    INTRODUCTION
Among the most versatile, innovative, and prolific literary figures of the twentieth century, Cocteau is best known for his dramas and films in which he utilized myth and tragedy in modern contexts to shock and surprise his audiences. Identifying himself as a poet and referring to virtually all of his works as poetry, Cocteau rejected naturalism in favor of lyrical fantasy, through which he sought to create a “poetry of the theatre” consisting not of words but of such stage devices as ballet, music, and pantomime. The fantastic, or le merveilleux, is made manifest in Cocteau's plays through inanimate objects and symbolic characters, which embellish one's understanding of “reality” by making the impossible possible.

Part I: The Five By Corjan de Raaf Uomo Universalis France mourned when Jean Cocteau died on 11 October 1963. In one blow, the country lost a great and internationally acclaimed poet, novelist, dramatist, designer and film maker. His fame began in his twenties and lasted until today. Cocteau was a truely universal artist, who seemlessly combined forms of art during an enormously productive life. The great volume of works we can see today are of a consistent quality and coherence. It is no secret that Cocteau was more than moderately interested in things of an esoteric nature. It has often been suggested that there is more to see than you can see in some of his work. Others have gone even further. Pierre Plantard, in his ' Dossiers Secrets ' claimed Cocteau was a Grandmaster of the Priory of Sion, and thus protector of the ancient Merovingian Bloodline. The bubble of the ' Dossiers Secrets ' was burst in recent years but not the attention for the more enigmatice angle of Jean Cocteau's work.
