The Story of Montgomery Clift
By Linda Nicolosi
Montgomery Clift Montgomery (Monty) Clift was a broodingly handsome, classical actor who is considered to be one of the greatest screen stars of the Golden Age of film. He led a tormented life, dying prematurely after many years of self-destruction through drinking, drugs and a long string of affairs with men (as well as a few women). An enormously attractive screen presence, Monty had large, expressive dark eyes, and portrayed a haunting vulnerability and sensitivity that was as much "who he was" onscreen as offscreen. His life story makes fascinating reading. In Montgomery Clift: A Biography, author Patricia Bosworth describes Monty's father Bill as passive, good-natured, and absolutely adoring of his wife, Sunny. A very successful man in the business world, Bill nevertheless deferred in every way to this strong-willed, opinionated woman at home. "My father would do anything in the world to please Mother," Monty's sister Ethel said (p. 23). "She made everyoneincluding her husbandfeel that no one with any brains could possibly disagree with her and still be a person of consequence" (p. 31). Indeed, Sunny was known as a vibrantly attractive and intelligent woman. She was "energetic, sometimes venomous, always triumphant in any situation" (p. 284).

If Montgomery Clift Were Alive Today...
(click image to enlarge) I'm participating in The Montgomery Clift Blog-a-thon over at Film Experience today. To honor what would have been Monty's 87th birthday, several bloggers are posting various perspectives on this legendary, yet tragic actor. Montgomery Clift was nominated for 4 Academy Awards and was considered a screen idol of his time. He was also a closeted homosexual. At first, he kept his lifestyle discreet. He knew if the studios and the public knew the truth, his leading-man image would be forever tarnished. I wondered how Montgomery Clift's homosexuality would be handled in today's celeb-obsessed world. Even if he had chosen to remain "in the closet", would Perez Hilton out him on his blog? Would

On the Manliness of Montgomery Clift
This post is part of the Montgomery Clift Blogathon , organized by Nathaniel R who writes the fine film blog The Film Experience . On this, what would have been Clift's 87th birthday, please follow the link to Nathaniel's place and read the other entries inspired by this great actor.
The true originator of the rebellious twentieth-century antihero was Montgomery Clift...not Marlon Brando or James Dean...the restrained performer with the inner tension and those ancient, melancholy eyes...his presence so unobtrusively strong that it lingered even when he was off-camera.
Marcello Mastroianni, quoted in Movie Talk
The Siren chose that epigraph because it perfectly summarizes her feelings about Montgomery Clift. He was a supremely talented and dedicated actor. Like many others in the American film pantheon, the sad, sordid facts of his alcoholism and unhappy life tend to dominate discussions of him, but in Clift's case there is another twist. He was gay, primarily attracted to men despite strong and lasting attachments to women such as Elizabeth Taylor and Libby Holman. Even in our more enlightened times, that colors discussion of Clift in ways that usually work to his detriment. The Siren would like to see that change.
Even before Clift's personal life was widely publicized or discussed there was a certain tone to colleagues' talk of him. He was fragile, "the most sensitive man I ever knew. If somebody kicked a dog a mile away he'd feel it," said Edward Dmytryk, director of the ill-fated

Actor
Montgomery Clift was a leading man of stage and screen, most widely known for his Oscar-nominated performance as Pvt. Prewitt in the movie From Here to Eternity (1953, with Frank Sinatra and Burt Lancaster ). Clift grew up in the midwest and on the east coast, and started acting on Broadway as a teenager; by age 18 he was playing leading roles and was an early member of the prestigious Actor's Studio. He eventually moved on to Hollywood, where his brooding, reluctant-hero presence was a novelty and made him a popular leading man of the post-war era. His most notable roles for which he was also Oscar-nominated were in the films The Search A Place In the Sun (1951), and The Misfits Marilyn Monroe 's last film). Clift is also known for the turmoil in his private life. His sexual preference was the subject of much speculation and he sometimes drank heavily, especially after a 1957 car crash that broke his jaw and nose and damaged his face badly. Clift and Elizabeth Taylor had a famous friendship and co-starred in the films A Place in the Sun Raintree Country (1957, with

Montgomery Clift: Cinema's Forgotten Rebel
Clift was There Before Brando and Dean
Before Brando there was Montgomery Clift. Before Dean there was Montgomery Clift. At his peak he was offered roles before just about every other actor in Hollywood. In the early 50s if your script was to feature a young rebel type, the actor you wanted most in the world was named Montgomery Clift. Unfortunately, the name is mostly forgotten now, but his legacy can be felt in the performance of every actor from DeNiro to Depp.
Clift literally grew up on the stage, beginning his acting career when he was twelve. Before he was twenty he had already performed on Broadway with some of the biggest stars in New York. It was only a matter of time before the strikingly handsome young man would be lured to Hollywood.
He had already appeared in two movies and been nominated for an Oscar before Brando even made his first movie and several years before Dean would come along. His was a new style of acting, understated and subtle. In fact, he was so good at playing a solder in The Search that many asked director Fred Zinneman where he found a soldier who could act. Monty had never been a soldier, but he had a talent to make you believe he could be anything.
When he met Elizabeth Taylor as they were beginning to film A Place in the Sun, he didn't realize it but he was not only meeting one of the best
