Adele Mailer Interview:
Glimpses of Monty Adele Morales Mailer was born in New York City. A striking beauty of Peruvian descent, she grew up in Brooklyn and studied art at the New School for Social Research. The late 1940s and early 1950s were an exciting time for the artsas young poets, writers, and actors came to the city from around the country to live andat least sometimeswork. Adele had a brief romance with an aspiring novelist named Jack Kerouac whom she remembers as "movie star handsome and totally self-absorbed." She also recalls double dating with his "crazy friend Neal" who would steal a new car for each such occasion. Later, Adele married Norman Mailer whose first novel, The Naked and the Dead , had skyrocketed him to fame in 1948.Their stormy marriage was partly fictionalized in The Deer Park , Mailer's 1955 novel which he later adapted as a play. During the marriage, Adele and Norman met and entertained many of the writers and actors who were part of the intellectual life of the city. Adele deals with some of these friendships in her own memoir of that period, The Last Party . Here, in an exclusive interview with American Legends, conducted via telephone from her home in New York, Adele Mailer recalls a glimpse of a friend named Montgomery Clift.

I don’t remember when it happened or how it is I came to see A Place in the Sun for the first time. I do remember how thoroughly I was hypnotized by the film and its lead Montgomery Clift . It was the first time I'd ever seen him. I’ve long been of the mind that a movie lovers relationships to the most memorable of screen actors (everyone from Streep to Brando to Davis to Taylor etc...) is largely defined by their first encounter or two. Feelings about various character actors can mutate and evolve. Leading actors who are not, in the end, altogether peppered with stardust can fluctuate in their connective power with an audience, too: they surprise on occasion and extend their run of fame but just as often they falter and fade quickly in the public consciousness. But with the true Movie Stars, the select few who stay larger than life and heavily mythologized… well, the first potent encounter sticks.
How else to explain that Montgomery Clift will always signify A Place in the Sun to me even though I’ve seen several of his other films? I've found many of his other performances just as or more impressive

Montgomery Clift A debt of gratitude goes to Patricia Bosworth, who wrote one of the best biographies ever written, "Montgomery Clift, a Biography." (I hope she doesn't have a fit about me mooching information.) By May 12th of 1956 - Monty was already filming Raintree County with Liz Taylor. Monty was very close to Liz Taylor and her husband at the time, Michael Wilding. According to Bosworth, both Wilding and Liz were bugging anyone who had a moment to spare with their marital problems, and Monty wanted time away from them. On this particular night he planned a quiet evening in, and gave his driver the night off. Liz called and invited Monty over for dinner. Monty said no, Liz. Liz kept calling back, Monty kept saying NO, Liz. Monty finally gives in to Liz (probably just to get her to shut up.), and drives over (in a car he hadn't driven in months) to her house. Rock Hudson is there (Liz is such a fag hag) as is Phyllis Gates (the poor broad that married Rock), Wilding and Liz, and Kevin McCarthy. Supposedly, Monty only had one glass of wine (rigggghhhht.). After the dull party broke up, Kevin offered to guide Monty's car down the steep hill to Sunset because Monty was apprehensive about driving. While Monty followed Kevin down the hill , he lost control of his car, and slammed into a phone pole . His face was practically torn off. I blame Liz for this. McCarthy drives back to the house and tells them to call an ambulance. Liz ignores this request and runs down the mountain screaming, "No! no! I'm going to Monty!" (drama queen.) This is the good part, taken from Bosworth's book:

Edward Montgomery Clift was born on October 17th, 1920 in Omaha, Nebraska. Although his father was a successful banker, he struggled during the Depression, and young Monty turned to acting to escape financial problems. He made his Broadway debut at age 13, and stayed there for more than 10 years, until he made his silver screen debut. His first movie was 1948's "Red River", which also starred John Wayne. His next movie was one of my favorites: "The Heiress". This great filmed based on the Henry James novel "Washington Square" also starred Olivia De Havilland, Ralph Richardson, and Miriam Hopkins. Clift played Morris Townsend, the handsome gigolo who charms plain but very wealthy Catherine Sloper (De Havilland). The film was a success, and it won Olivia a Best Actress Oscar. Montgomery Clift and Olivia De Havilland in "The Heiress" In 1951, Montgomery made the George Stevens classic, "A Place in the Sun", which also stars Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters, Raymond Burr, and Anne Revere. Clift is brilliant as George Eastman, the man torn between the girl he got pregnant and the girl he really loves. To rid himself of this problem, he takes drastic measures. Clift won an Academy Award nomination for this movie, but 1951 was a very challenging year. Humphrey Bogart won for "The African Queen", but also nominated was the man who would go on to become Monty's competiton: Marlon Brando. Both were up and coming sex symbols, and incredible actors.

Biography from Baseline's Encyclopedia of Film Born in Omaha, Nebraska. Moody, boyishly handsome and elegantly charming (on and off screen) romantic lead. Along with Marlon Brando, Clift was the first of America's new breed of brooding, non-conformist young stars of the late 1940s and 50s whose naturalistic acting style and independence from Hollywood studio-stardom shaped the next crop of actors including James Dean. Clift began acting at the age of 12, first in amateur and stock productions and by 14 was a promising young Broadway talent, appearing in 13 productions during the 1940s including There Shall Be No Night opposite Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, The Skin of Our Teeth with Tallulah Bankhead, the 1944 revival of Our Town and Tennessee Williams' You Touched Me Courted by Hollywood because of his growing theatrical reputation and matinee-idol good looks, he shot his first film, Howard Hawks's western, RED RIVER opposite John Wayne in 1946. Due to a law suit by Howard Hughes which delayed release, however, his debut film became Fred Zinnemann's THE SEARCH (1948). With his expressive, pale grey eyes (in an otherwise deadpan but classically beautiful face) and his air of vulnerability and sexual ambivalence, Clift excelled at playing sensitive loners and idealists and gave his characters a jittery, contemporary psychological edge rarely seen in Hollywood. He embarked on an impressive career of 17 films and four Academy Award nominations over the next 18 years before his death.
