23. WebMuseum: Chase, William Merritt
Brief biographical note and artwork images for the American painter.
http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/chase/
Chase, William Merritt
Chase, William Merritt (1849-1916). American painter. He settled in New York in 1878 after five years studying in Munich and became the most important American teacher of his generation. He taught at the Art Students' League of New York and then at his own Chase School of Art, founded in 1896. The vigorous handling and fresh color characteristic of much of the best American painting of the early 20th century owes a good deal to his example. His pupils (whom he encouraged to paint in the open air) included Demuth, O'Keefe, and Sheeler. Chase was a highly prolific artist (his output of more than 2000 paintings included still lifes, portraits, interiors, and landscapes), and his work is represented in many American museums.

Brooklyn Museum of Art Brooklyn, NY http://www.brooklynart.org William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes, 1886-1890 "W illiam Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes, 1886-1890" explores for the first time a group of Brooklyn and Manhattan outdoor scenes by one of the most important American artists of the nineteenth century. New research into Chase's personal life and the locations of his urban landscapes has revealed the significance of these paintings. The exhibition will be on view at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from May 26 through August 13, 2000. it will travel to The Art Institute of Chicago (September 7-November 26, 2000) and to The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (December 13, 2000-March 11, 2001). (left: In the Studio , BMA) The thirty-five paintings and pastels in the exhibition mark a pivotal period in Chase's career and in American art history. The works are the first significant studies of American landscape executed in the Impressionist technique. These landscapes led Chase to a breakthrough in his painting career and the renewed acclaim of American art critics. The works feature scenes of Brooklyn's Prospect and Tompkins Parks, Central Park, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Gowanus Bay, Bath Beach, and the painter's family backyard in Brooklyn. The Philbrick family of Hampton, New Hampshire, traces its origins to Bures, Suffolk Co., England, where it is noted that Thomas, son of Thomas Filbrigg, was baptized 13 September 1584. We know this is the same individual who appears in Hampton, as his wife and children re-appear in New England. The parent to the elder Thomas cannot be determined with any degree of certainty due to a lack of wills. It has been suggested that it was either Robert Felbrigge who was born about 1505 of Earle, Colone, Suffolk England and was buried 28 June 1571, or Edward Filbrick, buried 23 Nov. 1593.(1 ) Since there is no certainty at the present time, the family must begin with Thomas Felbrigge.
THOMAS FELBRIGGE
Thomas Felbrigge, of Bures, Suffolk County, may have been a fuller.(2) He was born about 1545-1550 and died after 1621. He married Elizabeth, last name unknown, about 1574. She was buried at Bures in 24 Apr. 1619.(3 ) Their children, all baptized at Bures, Suffolk, England, were(4): 1) John, baptized 9 Jan. 1575/76. 2) Priscilla, baptized 2 Feb. 1578/79. 3) Margaret, baptized 5 Nov. 1581. 4) *Thomas, baptized 13 Sept. 1584. 5) Robert, baptized 5 Nov. 1584. 6) Alice, baptized 25 May 1590. 7) Edward, baptized 18 June 1592. 8) William, baptized 28 Apr. 1594. 9) Elizabeth, baptized 28 Nov. 1596; died young. 10) Elizabeth, baptized 27 Aug. 1598.
