62. Charlie: The Life And Art Of Charles Chaplin - A Review
“charlie The Life and Art of Charles chaplin” attempts to present the man’s warts and errors, as well as the film and comic genius, in 131 minutes.
http://www.documentaryfilms.net/Reviews/Charlie/
A film reviewer for Time magazine since 1972, Richard Schickel has attained the stature of a dean of movie history and criticism. Rather than merely turn in his weekly copy, collect columns in occasional book form, and appear as a guest in other people’s documentaries, Schickel has quietly built a respectable body of studies on film about eminent directors (and more pointedly, writer-directors), as well as a few actors. Much of this work has been for TV: segments on Hitchcock, Cukor, Hawks, Vidor, Walsh, and Minnelli for the excellent 1973 “documentary miniseries” called “The Men Who Made the Movies,” and more recent projects on Eastwood, Cagney, and Harryhausen. Studies of Arthur Penn and Elia Kazan enjoyed limited release as features, and now Schickel has done one on Chaplin which also is playing in festivals and mainstream houses. “Charlie: The Life and Art of Charles Chaplin” attempts to present the man’s warts and errors, as well as the film and comic genius, in 131 minutes. Although one suspects it would be impossible to do this completely in anything less than six hours, “Charlie” does an excellent and absorbing job.

Charlie Chaplin
in Relationships
Secretive and inclined to brooding silences, it is difficult for others to really know his inner core, for Charlie Chaplin trusts and opens himself to very few. Allowing himself to be vulnerable and to relinquish control in relationships is not easy for Chaplin. Charlie has intense, passionate loves and hates and is a jealously loyal and protective friend - or a fearsome foe. Charlie Chaplin has a nasty habit of holding on to past hurts, resentments, and guilt - and to keep such feelings to himself. It is important for Charlie Chaplin to learn to forgive and let go, as well as to express his feelings openly and directly, rather than hiding or repressing them. He is not content with superficial appearances and is always probing beneath the surface of things for hidden motives. Charlie Chaplin has a great deal of emotional depth.

[He] thinks he is God’s gift to the world, although you must respect him for his work. It always struck me as a queer paradox that Chaplin, who should know more about humility, having invented the great feet-apart clown, should never have adopted the same humility in his private life.

Charlie Chaplin was the first international star of the modern era, especially beloved for his Little Tramp character. He was the first screen artist to write, direct and perform in his own films; in fact, in some cases, Charlie Chaplin even wrote the music for his movies. Finally, Charlie Chaplin was also the first artist to use his work to convey a message of equality and justice for all - but especially for the " little guy ". Charlie Chaplin's career and life made him the first global icon; his too-small derby hat, his too large shoes and his trademark moustache were instantly recognized by audiences from Chicago to China, from Iowa City to India. And they still are today. All of which makes Charlie Chaplin the first citizen of our global village.Take a tour and rediscover the humour and humanity of the man who touched the world. The following biography is from Wikipedia.org “The Free Encyclopedia.” Buy this Photo at AllPosters.com
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, (April 16, 1889 – December 25, 1977) was the most famous actor in early to mid Hollywood cinema, and later also a notable director. His principal character was "The Tramp": a vagrant with the refined manners and dignity of a gentleman who wears a tight coat, oversized pants and shoes, a derby or bowler hat, a bamboo cane, and his signature square mustache. Chaplin was one of the most creative personalities in the silent film era; he acted in, directed, scripted, produced, and eventually scored his own films.
Biography
He was born in Walworth, London, England to Charles, Sr. and Hannah Harriette Hill, both Music Hall entertainers. His parents separated soon after his birth, leaving him in the care of his increasingly unstable mother. In 1896, she was unable to find work; Charlie and his older half-brother Sydney had to be left in the workhouse at Lambeth, moving after several weeks to Hanwell School for Orphans and Destitute Children. His father died an alcoholic when Charlie was 12, and his mother suffered a mental breakdown, and was eventually admitted to the Cane Hill Asylum near Croydon. She died in 1928.

Help Search Chaplin, Charles (1889-1977) Actor, Director, Music Charles Chaplin was born in Walworth, London in 1889 to music hall parents, though his alcoholic father was soon to disappear and his mother would increasingly suffer from debilitating mental problems. At the age of five Chaplin took to the stage and within two years enjoyed sufficient success to catch the eye of comedy impresario Fred Karno While touring America for Karno in 1912, Chaplin was poached by Mack Sennett and began appearing in films. His apprenticeship with Sennett rapidly turned him into a major comic star and when he left in 1915 Chaplin was already well on the path to cinematic immortality. Chaplin 's impoverished Victorian working working-class roots colour all his Hollywood work and is are perfectly encapsulated in his comic persona of the little tramp, a true icon of world cinema. But by the 1950s, his resentment at the creeping hostility from his host nation over his perceived communist values began to distort his clarity of vision. With his first British feature A King In New York (1957) he turned ferociously on his tormentors, mocking their hypocritical views on freedom. Bitterness is to the fore and the crudeness of his argument is not leavened by enough comic moments. But at least Chaplin retains the balletic grace of the true slapstick clown which his directorial style - proscenium framing of complete routines to emphasise body movement - is designed to showcase.

One of the most popular and Charlie's own personal favorite. The Tramp in this one is a woeful prospector in the Klondike, beset by misfortune, and rejection. The film's themes of starvation, and cannibalism, could hardly have been more savage. They did however, propel Chaplin to new height of comic invention. The unforgettable spectacle of the endless line of prospectors making their way up the Chilkoot Pass during the 1898 Alaska gold rush is one of the most compelling adventure scenes of the silent era.
