16th April 1889 - 25th December 1977
Famous actor and Film Maker. Famous for his character who wore a bowler hat and carried a walking stick. One of the founders of United Artists, opened his own studios "The Charlie Chaplin Studios" in Hollywood.
Corsier-Sur-Vevey Cemetery, Corsier-Sur-Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland. Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin . KBE, (April 16, 1889 – December 25, 1977), better known as Charlie Chaplin, was an English comedy actor, becoming the most famous actor in the early to mid Hollywood cinema era, and also a notable director.
Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential personalities in the silent film era: he acted in, directed, scripted, produced, and eventually even scored his own films. His working life in entertainment spanned over 70 years, from the British Victorian stage and music hall in England as a child performer, almost until his death at the age of 88. He led one of the most remarkable and colorful lives of the 20th century, from a Dickens-like London childhood to the pinnacle of world fame in the film industry and as a cultural icon.
His principal character was "The Tramp": a vagrant with the refined manners and dignity of a gentleman who wears a tight coat, oversized trousers and shoes, a bowler hat, a bamboo cane, and his signature toothbrush moustache. Chaplin's high-profile public and private life encompassed highs and lows of both adulation and controversy.

November 18, 2007 - December 19, 2007 Sunnyside , November 23
With this series of fine prints, most of them imported from Europe (amazingly, many are currently not distributed in the United States), we invite you to experience Chaplin’s films as they were meant to be seen: not at home, but on the big screen, in the community of an audience. This is the way really to know Chaplin, the extraordinary performer and complex artist, maker of films that were poignant, pointed, and, above all, funny.
Please see our Movie Matinees for All Ages series for additional Chaplin screenings: Modern Times on November 17

Claim: Charlie Chaplin once lost a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest.
Status: True.
As "Chaplinitis" swept across American around 1915, Charlie Chaplin look-alike contests became a popular form of entertainment. (Actually, the competitions were really contests to see who could imitate the "tramp" character popularized by Chaplin, as few people would have recognized Chaplin himself without his familiar costume, moustache, and makeup.) A rising young actor/comedian named Bob Hope took first prize in one such contest in Cleveland.
Legend has it that Chaplin himself once entered lost of these competitions. It is usually said the contest was held in Monte Carlo or Switzerland, and that he came in second or third. (Some versions claim that Chaplin's brother Syd was judged the winner.) Chaplin did indeed fare poorly in a Chaplin look-alike contest, but the competition took place in a San Francisco theater. His final standing is not recorded, although it was noted that he "failed even to make the finals." Chaplin told a reporter at this time that he was "tempted to give lessons in the Chaplin walk, out of pity as well as in the desire to see the thing done correctly."

The London Charlie Chaplin Festival 2005 is a celebration of the life and works of South London's favourite son, presenting 2 outdoor screenings in Southwark and Westminster, one indoors in Lambeth. The festival will also comprise 'Little Tramp' guided tours around Chaplin's childhood haunts by the acclaimed local dramatist John Constable, the Charles Chaplin Conference being held at the London College of Communication in association with the BFI and the University of Southampton and Chaplin-themed film workshops with local primary schools. This Festival is the first comprehensive celebration of Chaplin in and around the beloved streets of his childhood, of which he had fond memories despite the hardship he and his family endured. He revisited the area on several occasions throughout his life with a mixture of nostalgia and sadness and was heavily criticised for not relinquishing his English nationality whilst in the States. Whilst he disturbed the powers that be with his outspoken 'humanist' views on, most notably the Nazis and the shortcomings of capitalism, and they pilloried him for it, his bond with the general public remained strong as evidenced by the hordes of well-wishers that he attracted in his travels to all corners of the globe. This Festival revisits the genius of the 'struggling non-descript from Lambeth' and reaches out to a new audience of local youngsters, to inspire and amuse them with Chaplin's enduring wit, charm and idealism.

A Tribute to Charlie Chaplin
While many silent film stars have been forgotten by the general public, most of their work lost forever, "Charlie Chaplin" is still a household name in most of the world. This is partly due to the fact that Mr. Chaplin was an astute businessperson, retaining ownership of his films, carefully preserving them, and rereleasing them on a regular basis to new audiences. But it is also because Charlie Chaplin, The Little Tramp who was distinctly different from Charles Chaplin himself, despite Freud's opinion that Chaplin basically played himself as he was in his "dismal" youth was a universal character who appealed to every person who has ever been poor, downtrodden, or put-upon.
