At the beginning of the twentieth century Filmmaking was in its infancy. There were photographic techniques that could create multiples of one person in a shot, but even the most creative photographers could not produce what we see on film today. Some look at the black and white scenes in the silent films of the 1910s and 1920s and decide they have no value. Few take the time to examine this early art. This is unfortunate, as it was the product of a time when true ability could not be faked. There were no computer graphics to stun the audiences. There was no dialogue, just the playing of an organ by an employee of the theater. The talent on the screen had to be real talent. Their body language had to be so good as to convey their message silently. A dramatic actor had to be truly dramatic and a comedian funny using only visual humor.
As far as we have come our view of what makes an artist a genius stays the same. He must be original, daring, willing to take chances, and have a knowledge of what the audience wants. The silent geniuses were all of those things. Chaplin was not only a great performer on screen, but he directed most of his films (only his earliest films were directed by others). He was a producer and writer. In the days of silent films he wrote the scene as the film was being made. In his later films the opening credits seem to say "...by Charles Chaplin" over and over.

    Chaplin, Charlie
Chaplin, Charlie (Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin), , English film actor, director, producer, writer, and composer, b. London. Chaplin began on the music-hall stage and then joined a pantomime troupe. While on tour in the United States, he was recruited by Mack Sennett . Chaplin merged physical grace, disrespect for authority, and sentimentality into a highly individual character he created for the Keystone Company. In appearance, his Little Tramp wore a gentlemen's derby, cane, and neatly kept moustache with baggy trousers and oversized shoes. He affected a unique, bow-legged dance-walk. Chaplin skipped from one studio to another in search of greater control over his work, finally cofounding United Artists in 1919 with D. W.

Charles Chaplin
As writer, director and principle actor, Charlie Chaplin demonstrated an unparalleled degree of cinematic control that allowed him to infuse his movies with inventive dramatic structure and inimitable comedic signature. Chaplin is without equal among other writer-director-actors in terms of longevity and success. As one of the movies' most richly talented filmmakers and creator of one of film's most indelible images, Chaplin is perhaps the most biographied figure in Hollywood history. Praise for his comic genius, however, obscures his cunning as film producer—the role which enabled him to sustain his versatile talents and cement the cultural endurance of his on-screen Tramp persona. Chaplin's influence as comedic force and cultural icon have overshadowed one of his most triumphant roles as independent filmmaker. Chalie Chaplin as " the Tramp" in 1922.

Charlie Chaplin was a superstar of silent comedies and one of the great icons of 20th-century film. Chaplin had a rotten childhood and an early start in the entertainment business, performing as a child on the vaudeville stage. He went to Hollywood in 1914 and began acting in silent comedies for Mack Sennett. By 1915 he controlled most aspects of his films, in which he usually appeared as a character called simply "The Little Tramp," a lovably shabby dreamer with a brushy mustache, bowler hat and cane. Chaplin was one of the founders of United Artists Studios (along with actors Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford and director D.W. Griffith ) and was one of the first movie makers to have complete control over his features. His best-known films include The Gold Rush City Lights (1931), and

Swiss police have arrested two men - a Pole aged 24 and a Bulgarian aged 38 - and say they have confessed to stealing the coffin and reburying it. Names of the accused have not been released, but police say they are both motor mechanics. They were traced after police kept a watch on 200 phone kiosks and tapped the Chaplins' phone after the family received ransom demands of £400,000 for return of the body after it went missing in March.

The Religious Affiliation of
Charlie Chaplin
influential director and actor
Charlie Chaplin was born to actor/musician parents. For most of his life he didn't really practice any religion aside from theater and film. Bowman records that Chaplin received his name "at the font", so he was apparently baptized into the Church of England as an infant. During some years while Chaplin was a child his mother brought him to weekly Anglican church services. As an adult, Chaplin's background was clearly Christian, but he was not actively religious in a traditional sense. Chaplin only saw his father twice until the age of seven. The man left him and his mother about a year after Charlie was born. During Chaplin's earliest years his mother was a singer and performer. Then her voice gave out, her stage career ended, and she began actively attending Church of England (Anglican) services. At the age of seven Chaplin's mother deemed insane, sent to Cane Hill lunatic asylum, and the court sent Charlie and his brother to live with his father, who had by then stopped all payments of child support. From: Charlie Chaplin, My Autobiography , Simon and Schuster: New York, NY (1964), page 22: When the fates deal in human destiny, they heed neither pity nor justice. Thus they dealt with Mother. She never regained her voice... our circumstances turned from bad to worse. Although Mother was careful and had saved a little money, that very soon vanished... from three comfortable rooms we moved to two, then into one, our belongings dwindling and the neighborhoods into which we moved growing progressively drabber.
