George Eliot [pseudonym of Mary Anne or Marian Evans] (1819-1880) , English author wrote The Mill on the Floss "How can you talk so, Mr. Tulliver? She's too big a gellgone nine, and tall of her ageto have her hair cut short; an' there's her cousin Lucy's got a row o' curls round her head, an' not a hair out o' place. It seems hard as my sister Deane should have that pretty child; I'm sure Lucy takes more after me nor my own child does. Maggie, Maggie," continued the mother, in a tone of half-coaxing fretfulness, as this small mistake of nature entered the room, "where's the use o' my telling you to keep away from the water? You'll tumble in and be drownded some day, an' then you'll be sorry you didn't do as mother told you." Maggie's hair, as she threw off her bonnet, painfully confirmed her mother's accusation. Mrs. Tulliver, desiring her daughter to have a curled crop, "like other folks's children," had had it cut too short in front to be pushed behind the ears; and as it was usually straight an hour after it had been taken out of paper, Maggie was incessantly tossing her head to keep the dark, heavy locks out of her gleaming black eyes,an action which gave her very much the air of a small Shetland pony.—Book 1, ch. 2

Major Labels Allow P2P Music Sharing on Qtrax
By Eliot Van Buskirk Categories: Digital Music News Events Getting Artists Paid Music Software and Sites ... Social Media After years of fighting peer-to-peer file-sharing companies, the major record labels have decided that if they can't beat them, they might as well join them in one case, anyway. At the Midem conference in Cannes, France, Qtrax announced deals with all the major music labels and publishers to offer the first free and legal ad-supported P2P service to include major label music. "You can't change the attitudes and habits of what is now probably amounting to two generations who believe that music ought to be free on the internet," said Qtrax CEO Allan Klepfisz. "Those people are not going to be discouraged by Supreme Court decisions, they're not going to be discouraged by technological interference. Ultimately, what will discourage them is a demonstratively better service." Klepfisz pegs the service's catalog at more than 25 million songs, which would dwarf those of iTunes and other online music stores. The songs will be wrapped in Microsoft's Windows Media subscription DRM. This means that unlike the free, ad-supported services offered by imeem and

The Casuistry of George Eliot
This paper explores the contributions of three philosophers to Eliot's work: Auguste Comte, Ludwig Feuerbach, and Benedictus Spinoza. The first half of the paper is as thorough a summary as possible of the philosophies of each thinker. The second half attempts to discover some of these philosophical ideas embedded within certain themes in Eliot's fiction in three rough, and necessarily overlapping, areas: Eliot's vision of society and how it develops, her ideas regarding the nature of the interaction between society and the individual, and her views relating to ethical behavior, i.e., the moral responsibility of the individual and his relative potentials for spiritual freedom and growth. George Eliot came into intimate contact with the theories of these three philosophers, through study and translation, before she began writing fiction in 1856. Eliot's translation of Strauss' Life of Jesus was published in 1846, and her translation of Feuerbach's Essence of Christianity was published in 1854. Willey asserts that in the eight years between these translations of two of the "Higher Critics", the first solidifying her rejection of Christianity and the second providing a humanistic substitute, George Eliot was first exposed to Comte's writings; his Positive Philosophy appeared in 1853 while she was working on Feuerbach (228). I agree with Willey that the similarity of the two philosopher's views must have struck Eliot strongly. Though Eliot had also worked on translating Spinoza as early as 1843, she worked on the translation of Spinoza's

The recent decisions in Los Angeles, with the firing of head coach Andy Murray , and in Boston, with the dismissal of GM Mike O'Connell , underscore hope for change, yet in different contexts. Murray's ouster is an in-the-moment shock-the-system move that reeks of desperation. O'Connell's pink slip was an organization 'fessing up and finally waving the white flag for its previous errant decisions. Kings GM Dave Taylor decided to make a move he'd been mulling over for some time because he saw disturbing trends emerging that harkened back to the previous two seasons under Murray in which the team failed to make the playoffs. In 2003-04, the Kings endured a plummet of precipitous proportions, losing their final 11 games. The previous campaign, the team needed a late-season surge and instead went 3-6-2 over its final 11 matches. Calamities of that magnitude stay top-of-mind. Back in late January, Murray made the comment to me that when you lose, you never know when you'll win again.
