Lon Chaney
Chaney displaying his famous makeup kit One of the greatest actors of the silent film era, Lon Chaney was notorious for his gift at transforming himself into whatever a specific role called for. Dubbed "the Man of a Thousand Faces," Chaney was truly the king of make-up, which he did on his own. The son of deaf-mute parents, Chaney prided himself on outdoing his make-up with each movie. He is best known for his roles in the two horror movies he starred in, The Hunchback of Notre Dame in 1923 and The Phantom of the Opera in 1925. Both of these films contain scenes which are still widely known today, even if the movies themselves go generally unviewed. L.C. [Davis, 7th floor stacks: PN2287.C48 A8] Comprised of excellent pictures of the late actor, this is the biography to consult for a photograhic biography of Lon Chaney. The illustrations that this book contains are extremely plentiful, and many of them do not appear in other sources. The biography itself is good, but not great, so if it is a full description of the life of Lon Chaney you want, I would highly recommend the book by Michael F. Blake. This book also contains a short filmography which lists some, but not all, of Chaney’s movies. Blake, Michael F.

biography
Famed horror great Lon Chaney Jr. was born Creighton Chaney in February 1906 in Oklahoma. At that time his father, future silent screen star Lon Chaney, was a poor vaudevillian who had taken his family on the road. By the time young Creighton was ten years old, his parents' marriage had dissolved, but Lon Chaney's film career had begun, and the family's fortune took a turn for the better. Discouraged by his father in looking to acting as a profession, Creighton Chaney took on a succession of menial jobs until his marriage to wife Dorothy in 1926; the couple eventually had two sons, born in 1928 and 1930. With a family to support, Creighton Chaney went to work for his father-in-law's company. It wasn't until after his father's death in 1930 that Creighton Chaney considered taking up acting. His father's name helped him get his foot in the door, and in the early 1930s he was given small roles in films. An early starring role for Chaney came in the 1932 RKO serial The Last Frontier , but his career lacked real momentum until he agreed to change his name to Lon Chaney Jr. in the mid 1930s. (Later in his career, he dropped the "Junior" designation and was billed as "Lon Chaney.") After ten years, his marriage to Dorothy fell apart, and Chaney married second wife Patsy in 1937.

All too often "life imitates art". This couldn't be truer than in the case of cinematic legend Lon Chaney, Jr. The character that Lon Chaney, Jr. made his own (Larry Talbot/Wolf Man) was also the character that he most identified with. The tragedy of a man who wanted to make it on his own and not live off the reputation of his legendary father. A man who had tremendous acting ability and range, but was rarely give the opportunity to show it. It was these personal demons that haunted Lon throughout his life, keeping him one step away from grabbing the golden ring of super stardom. My first and strongest impression of Lon was not unlike many others....in Universal's " The Wolf Man ." But where others would call it a good movies, I saw a masterpiece and an actor who firmly touched my heart. Lon Chaney's portrayal of Larry Talbot and the Wolf Man helped to draw me into horror, starting the fire that burns so bright today. Until recently, my only exposure to Lon's work was that in the horror genre. I loved him in "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man", "House of Frankenstein", "Ghost of Frankenstein", "The Mummy's Tomb", and "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein". People don't realize that Lon was the only actor ever to play all four Universal monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and the Wolf Man). I spent many a Saturday afternoons during my youth glued to the TV watching all these movies over and over again.

Chaney became known as “the man of a thousand faces” because of his versatility as a character actor and expertise with make-up, which enabled him to portray a variety of gruesome and grotesque characters warped by psychological or physical deformities. Chaney was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His parents were deaf-mutes, and the pantomimic skill Chaney learned as a child in order to communicate with his parents served him well in his acting career. He first performed in vaudeville and in 1912 appeared in his first film. He played the title roles in
