Apollo Lunar Surface Journal . Various books by and about the astronauts have also been published. The Wonder of it All In the Shadow of the Moon (see , The Space Review, September 24, 2007). It is worthwhile in this discussion, however, to draw a few distinctions between the two because they approach their subjects differently. A major thematic difference between Wonder and Shadow is that the former is more people-oriented, whereas the latter is more mission-oriented. A principal marketing difference is that Shadow already has a limited theatrical release. Wonder , which was also shot in high definition using a Sony camera that provided an HD, 1808i, 16:9 format, is still seeking distribution. Thus, the producers have several options available for circulation, including a theatrical release. It is currently being shown around the country at special presentations at science museums and similar venues, a few introduced by some of the Apollo astronauts. The film premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival last April, and was also selected for viewing at the Worldfest Houston, Rhode Island, Edmonton, and Bergen International Film Festivals. It has already received multiple honors, among them a Remi Award. Although at present available to limited audiences, a DVD release of the movie is being planned, and the author was fortunate to be sent an advanced copy for review. A major thematic difference between Wonder and Shadow is that the former is more people-oriented, whereas the latter is more mission-oriented.

Last Man on Moon Walks Through Olympic Village
    By Nick Greene , About.com
    Filed In:
Retired Astronaut Eugene Cernan Visits Torino Olympics Omega Corporation On December 11, 1972, the Apollo 17 crew were the last men to set foot on the moon. While Ronald Evans manned the command module in orbit around the moon, Commander Eugene Cernan and his crewmate, scientist Harrison Schmidt drobe the lunar buggy 21 miles over the lunar surface, gathering samples. As they departed, they left behind a plaque that reads: "Here Man completed his first exploration of the Moon, December 1972 A.D. May the spirit of peace in which we came be reflected in the lives of all mankind." The last to leave the surface to ascend into the lunar module was Eugene Cernan who stated, "America's challenge of today has forged man's destiny of tomorrow." Recently, Eugene Cernan, now retired from NASA, visited Torino, Italy as a guest of the Omega corporation, Official Timekeeper of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. Mr. Cernan called his adventures with NASA and Apollo 17 "my own Olympic Games." He compared similarities between the achievement of athletes who train for years and overcome enormous obstacles to reach the Olympic Games with Apollo 17. The similarity was also evident, he said, "in the athletes’ desire to share an exceptional achievement with their fans and fellow countrymen and with the team that made their performance possible."

Where on the Moon is Jack Schmitt's Hammer?
One of the last things that Harrison H. "Jack" Schmitt did while on the surface of the moon at the end of the last lunar EVA of the Apollo program was to throw their one and only Geology hammer off into the distance. Where did the only Geology Hammer ever to be carried on the moon by a professional Geologist actually end up? (Apologies in advance - most of these images are a bit on the large side and are slow loading over even faster modem lines.... Also, click on your browsers's "Back" button after viewing the images to return to this document.) Here is an image from the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal showing Jack Schmitt most likely right after throwing his hammer off in the general direction of the ALSEP site to the west of the LM. Luckily, this image is found just after the end of a sequence of images that tell us the story of the flight of his hammer. Here is an exerpt from the Apollo Lunar Surface Journal of the discussion surrounding the hammer throw: Schmitt: Let me have your camera (to put in the ETB). Go ahead (and talk). (Noticing that Gene is about to throw the hammer) Oh, the poor little...Let me throw the hammer.

"Some images are currently available only as low-resolution scans provided by NASA Johnson in the mid-1990s. The individual scans have TARGA filenames. Markus Mehring has compiled cross-references between those filenames and the NASA photo ID designations customarily used. Other images are available as higher resolution scans from prints and, unless otherwise credited, were provided by Kipp Teague. Beginning in 2004, NASA began to provide scans from original film and, as they become available to the ALSJ, we are using them to replace all prior versions. Near the beginning of their third and final excursion across the lunar surface , Schmitt took this picture of Cernan flanked by an American flag and their lunar rover's umbrella-shaped high-gain antenna. The prominent Sculptured Hills lie in the background while Schmitt's reflection can just be made out in Cernan's helmet. The Apollo 17 crew returned with 110 kilograms of rock and soil samples, more than from any of the other lunar landing sites . And after thirty years, Cernan and Schmitt are still the last to walk on the Moon.
