A Tribute to Apollo (Part 2)
This is a continuation of the original Tribute to Apollo site. The first site was starting to get very long and a bit unwieldy, so I have added a second section to the original blogsite.
As I said in the prior introduction, these sites allow me the ability to show and provide the story behind many of the artifacts that I have collected over the years.
I hope you enjoy the artifacts and the stories behind them.

Book review: The Unsung heroes get their due.
Posted in Apollo program Books Review with tags Bales Brown Griffin Hatleberg ... Underwood on January 7, 2008 by tellinghistory Watkins has done a great service to space history specifically, and this cultural experiment we call late 20th century America, by giving us fourteen glimpses into the lives of the unsung heroes behind the Apollo mission. One could only wish we had access to many more of the stories of people like Joseph Laitin, Joe Schmidt and Rodney Rose. Knowing what the average person does about the Apollo heroes (i.e., the astronauts) gives one a foundation to appreciate what the Apollo missions accomplished and what they meant to our country. But knowing the contributions of the behind-the-scenes support people, like the ones profiled in this book, will make your understanding and appreciation of the Apollo missions go from analog to high-def plasma in 186 short pages. Today in Space History gives it high marks and a must-read.

WASHINGTON, DC, October 24, 2005
The Combs Award grew out of a 2001 donation by Harry Combs to the National Aviation Hall of Fame (NAHF). As part of his generous $1.3 million gift to the NAHF for the creation of a Research Center, he stipulated that the Combs Award would support and encourage continuing aviation heritage research and preservation efforts.
Combs’ illustrious career includes accomplishments as an aircraft designer, fixed base operator, flight instructor, entrepreneur and author. A former aviation executive who helped devise the modern air traffic control system and pulled LearJet from the brink of bankruptcy in the 1970s, he also is the author of the acclaimed book Kill Devil Hill: Discovering the Secrets of the Wright Brothers . Previous Combs Award winners include photographer Dan Patterson and Wright State University Libraries, Special Collections and Archives 100th Anniversary of Flight Commemoration projects and events.

Gene was one of Roger’s closest friends. Both members of the third class of Astronauts, Gene and Roger were the elite of the elite. Like Roger, Gene was one of 14 Astronauts chosen from over 1800 initial pilot applicants. He also served his country as a Naval Aviator. While they were training in Houston the were next door neighbors.
A veteran of three space flights, Gene served as pilot with Tom Stafford on Gemini-IX and was the second American to walk in space, the first being Ed White.
On his second flight, Gene flew the first Lunar Module to travel to the moon. He and Mission Commander Tom Stafford, with Command Module Pilot John W. Young were only the second crew to actually travel to the moon. The first was Apollo 8. After reaching the moon, Gene and Tom undocked their Lunar Lander and travel to within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface without ever touching down. All in preparation for the next flight which would land Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrine on the surface. The work that Gene, Tom and John did made the famous Apollo 11 flight possible.
On his third and final spaceflight, Gene Commanded Apollo 17, which would be the last manned lunar mission. Shown here (seated), Gene poses with Command Module Pilot Ronald E. Evans (standing on right) and Lunar Module Pilot Jack H. Schmitt on a Lunar Roving Vehicle trainer in front of Apollo 17's Saturn V Rocket.

My Trip to the Maya Ruins of Mexico (Almost 200 photos, descriptions and travel tips)
I took a trip from September 9 to September 16, 2000 to visit the Maya ruins of southern Mexico. I visited (in order of my travels) Chichen Itza, Labna, Xlapak, Sayil, Kabah, Uxmal, Palenque, Xpujil and Becan.
I took both first class and second class busses. The differences in their prices have now grown to almost 50%, in most cases. But, they are both still very reasonably priced. The first class busses have on-board movies, reclinging seats, air conditioning and bathrooms. The second class busses are less well equipped and make many more stops. My overnight stays were in "bargain basement" establishments ranging from 90 NP (New Peso) to 180 NP. The entrance prices to most of the ruins was 22 NP to 30 NP. Uxmal was the highest at 80 NP. Entry is free on Sundays. Overall, I would estimate my travel, lodging and entry expenses to be approximately $200.

Bad Astronomy and Universe Today Forum Space and Astronomy Conspiracy Theories PDA View Full Version : Gene Cernan - Last Man on the Moon Moonman 12-May-2002, 07:59 PM Just read his book, great read!
He mentions that when he was in Apollo 10 and he came round the backside of the Moon in Snoppy separated from Charlie Brown, how Madrid tracked THE TWO space craft.
I'd like to know how the HB's think they faked that.
Also if Madrid tracked them, I'm sure the Soviets did as well.
If you haven't read the book, then do so. It's not very technical, just a good story.
jagster 12-May-2002, 08:52 PM I just finished "Failure is not an Option" by Gene Kranz. That was great. Even though I knew the outcome of most of the missions, I couldn't put it down. It was pretty exciting to hear how Missiom Control dealt with all of the problems that the world never really heard about.
Is Cernan's book about only his flights, or the whole time he spent as an astronaut? JayUtah 13-May-2002, 03:35 AM Cernan's book is much like the other memoirs from notable Apollo participants. It's an autobiography, but with greater detail on his flights. Despite some exaggerations, it's a fun read. I especially enjoyed his account of his Gemini spacewalk. pvtpylot 13-May-2002, 05:39 AM

http://www.xula.edu/xulanexus/issue3/Washington.html
Space Migration: A Fallible Consideration Amber Washington
Perhaps we have a gazed curiously into the velvet darkness as children and wondered what lied beyond those strange, luminous orbs. After hearing about space shuttle programs and humans being sent to travel into those mythical heavens, we may have wanted to be included with the astronauts. Of course, as we grew older, most of out curiosity became shrouded by our pursuit of new goals. It is sometimes difficult to relate back to our childhood thoughts when out knowledge of space exploration was so little. Now that we've heard numerous accounts of failed missions and fatal accidents associated with this attempt to animate human inquisition, most of us have probably decided that we'd rather not take part in the program after all. Though space exploration can widen the possibility of humans expanding their habits, a variety of negative aspects circulate this decision. The biggest disadvantage of space travel is the risk of losing innocent lives. For instance, the Challenger Space Shuttle exploded within mere seconds after takeoff in 1986, killing the seven passengers on board. Similarly, the recent Columbia Space Shuttle accident on February 1, 2003, killed all seven of the astronauts aboard, also. Is it really worth it for human lives to be sacrificed in the attempt to achieve this dream? Just like everyone else, those astronauts have family members that grieve over their unnecessary deaths. Even Gene Cernan (2001), the Apollo 17 astronaut who journeyed to the moon in 1972 commented, "The exploration of space, like the exploration of life, if you will, is a risk." To make matters worse, these incidents have not stopped plans for sending humans into space in the future. Preventable mishaps such as Challenger and Columbia have happened all too often as a consequence of excessive curiosity for territorial expansion.
