What is the Carter Family Fold?
About three miles down a narrow country road from tiny Hiltons, Va , you'll find what appears at first glance to be a large wooden shed built on the side of a steep hill. But make no mistake about it - this is no shed. This is the Carter Family Fold
The Carter Family Fold - Hiltons, Va What is the Carter Fold you ask? Before I can properly answer that question we need to look at a bit of history - an amazing musical family and an historic event that quite literally changed the world of music forever in 1927.
The Carter Family
Early in the 20th century, Alvin Pleasant (A.P.) Carter, his wife Sara and her cousin Maybelle lived in the area known as Poor Valley at the foot of fabled Clinch Mountain. This trio was the original Carter Family.
The A.P. Carter Homeplace Cabin after being moved to the Carter Fold grounds
A.P., Sara and Maybelle performed in a unique style that became known as "Carter Picking". Their pure, simple harmony set a musical standard that is still aspired to even today. "Mother Maybelle's" guitar work on the beautiful "Wildwood Flower" is emulated by guitar pickers the world over.
In 1927, Ralph Peer came to nearby Bristol, Tennessee representing the

Can The Circle Be Unbroken: Country Music's First Family
The second half of the Carter Family s recorded output largely rests with the contents of this CD. It's their output for Columbia s OKeh and Conqueror labels, 17 of the 20 recorded over five days in May 1935 and the final three from an October 1940 session. In typical Carter Family fashion, the material is wide ranging and eclectic, running from British folk music ("Black Jack David," "Sinking in the Lonesome Sea" to gospel ("On the Rock Where Moses Stood," "River of Jordan" to blues ("Worried Man Blues" and beyond. Along the way we're treated to re-cuts of notable Carter "hits" like "Can the Circle Be Unbroken," "Wildwood Flower," and "Keep on the Sunny Side." After you collect all of their Victor recordings from the 1920s, here's your next stop, an indispensable addition to any basic country collection. ~ Cub Koda, All Music Guide

HISTORICAL NOTE
A. P. Carter, his wife Sara, and his sister-in-law Maybelle first recorded as the Carter Family in pioneering recording sessions at Bristol, Va., in 1927. They continued to perform and record together until 1941, establishing themselves as one of the most influential groups in the country music industry. They recorded a wide range of song types from blues, ballads, and gospel to traditional folk songs and original compositions. Carter family members recorded in various combinations in later years, with A. P., Sara, and their children Janette and Joe recording together and sometimes known as the Carter Family. Maybelle later performed and recorded with her daughters, June Helen, and Anita. In 1970, the original Carter Family was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Thursday May 17th, 2001 Mother Maybelle's L-5 moves into a 'mansion' Led by Othar Turner's Fife and Drum Band this morning, a limousine procession of Country Music Hall of Fame members carried the last artifact to go into the new Country Music Hall of Fame museum Mother Maybelle Carter 's Gibson L-5 guitar . They traveled only ten blocks from the original Music Row location to the grand new facility at 5th Avenue South and Demonbreun Street in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. In ceremonies at the new museum, country star and master instrumentalist Marty Stuart held Mother Maybelle's Gibson aloft and said, "This guitar is the heart of country music. Inside this guitar lives country music." Stuart, playing Mother Maybelle's Gibson, then ended the inaugural ceremonies with a song first recorded and popularized by the Carter Family, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." The history of that guitar and country music began on another short trip July 31, 1927. A.P. "Doc" Carter drove his model A Ford loaded with his wife Sara, his sister-in-law Maybelle (who was seven months pregnant at the time), and Sara's two children and various musical instruments 30 miles from mountainous Maces Spring, Virginia, to Bristol, Tennessee. They were to record for Victor talent scout Ralph Peer, who was conducting a 10-day session in a leased store front on State Street. The Carter session had been pre-arranged between A.P. and Peer through the assistance of the local Victrola merchant. The Carter Family cut six sides on August 1-2, including "The Storms are on the Ocean" and "Single Girl, Married Girl", an event often marked as the beginning of country music as a popular, commercial musical style.

Sunny Side The Carter Family: Will the Circle Be Unbroken plays like PBS version of VH1's Behind the Music . A.P. Carter brought us the first commercial country music, captured in the famous 1927 Bristol Sessions. His ambition allowed him to achieve fame and glory but left him alone, a broken man. The irony of the Carter Family trio (made up of A.P. Carter, his wife Sara, and her cousin Maybelle) is that the "family" was actually estranged for much of their career. The documentary means to fill us in on the story behind America's First Family of Country Music. That effort is important, and Circle is a vital contribution to music history. But insofar as it focuses so much of its attention on Carter's failed marriage and personal demons, it feels too much like soap opera, too little like cultural commentary on the trio and its music. The failed love story is a poignant one, and it does inform their music. Driven and moody, A.P. focused on his musical ambitions, which drove Sara away. When he pushed the group to record for Victor Records and Ralph Peer, they earned a living and fame as a result. While Sara loved music, she didn't feel the need to perform. And she hated celebrity. Alienated from A.P., she fell in love with his cousin, Coy Bays, but their families kept them apart (Coy's family moved to California). Sara then left A.P. and their kids in 1933 and went over the mountain to live with her family. In 1936, they divorced but kept recording and performing together, maintaining a carefully managed public image until 1943. Our documentary voiceover (Robert Duvall) tells us that the Carter Family became "America's symbol of family and domesticity" and that they were even set to appear on the cover of
