She was 82. Family members said Carter, who had battled Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses, was taken to the Holston Valley Medical Center on Tuesday. Her family said she appeared to be improving for a time, but died on Sunday. Carter was the daughter of A.P. and Sara Carter. Her parents and her father’s sister-in-law Maybelle Carter formed a singing trio discovered in 1927 when talent scout Ralph Peer came through the Tennessee-Virginia border town of Bristol to record mountain music. When her brother Joe died last March, Janette Carter became the last surviving child of the original group’s members. The First Family Of Country Music The Carter Family was a country music group that performed and recorded between 1927 and 1943. Their music had a profound impact on later bluegrass, country , pop and rock musicians, as well as on the U.S. folk revival of the 1960s. The original group consisted of Alvin Pleasant Delaney Carter (A.P.; 1891-1960), his wife, Sara Dougherty Carter (autoharp and guitar; 1898-1979), and Maybelle Addington Carter (guitar; 1909-1978). Maybelle was married to A.P.'s brother Ezra (Eck) Carter. All three were born and raised in southwestern Virginia where they were immersed in the tight harmonies of mountain gospel music and shape note singing. The down-home melodies and beautiful harmonies of these Appalachian musicians had wide appeal, and while they didn’t undertake huge national tours or make films like their contemporary Jimmie Rodgers, they did sell hundreds of thousands of records and made over 270 recordings between 1927 and 1941. Alvin Pleasant Delaney “Doc” Carter, born April 15, 1891 in Maces Spring, Virginia, was the oldest of Robert and Molly Carter’s eight children. Robert Carter had musical talent, but didn’t play because of religious beliefs. His wife Molly taught their children to sing ballads that had been handed down through generations. A.P.’s first job was on a railroad gang, and while he was away from home wrote songs about Clinch Mountain. He returned home in 1911 and became a fruit tree salesman, while continuing to write songs in his spare time. Sara Dougherty, born July 21, 1898 in Flat Woods, Virginia, learned to play the autoharp, guitar, and banjo as a young girl. She met A.P., while he was traveling around selling trees (the story goes that she was sitting on her front porch singing a tune and playing her autoharp), and they were married on June 18, 1915. With A.P. on fiddle and Sara on autoharp, the couple played music in people’s homes and in churches.

Seventeen acetates have fallen into Strachwitz's hands, and so were born three recently released Carter Family CDs titled On Border Radio . The sounds of On Border Radio are not what made the Carters million sellers. Rather, the family's voluminous popular recordings for Victor now being methodically reissued by Boston-based Rounder Records are the very fabric of country music history. But the radio transcriptions are an illuminating peek behind the scenes. The close harmonies of A.P. Carter, his wife, Sara, and her cousin Maybelle were discovered by a traveling talent scout in 1927, at the same audition where "Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers got his start. Cousin Maybelle has had the strongest effect on the evolution of country music, as her modified flat-picking including a bass-string rumble known to some as the "Carter lick" has influenced country pickers and piano players alike. Between 250 and 300 recordings, including such popular songs as "Keep on the Sunny Side" and an early recorded rendition of the standard "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," vaulted the trio to the status of country-music legends. Who’s the mother? Who started this whole big snowball rolling? At first, when contemplating this thought, I was tempted to say Captain John Smith. That’s right, the guy who helped found the colony of Virginia in 1607 and avoided having his head bashed in by the timely intervention of Pocahontas. Upon further reflection, I’d have to say it was those groups of nobles, royalty and investors in the late 16th and early 17th centuries who sponsored the explorations and colonization of the east coast of the North American continent, particularly the region from the lower Chesapeake Bay down to about present day Wilmington, NC. The reasons these expeditions were funded and undertaken were many: profit, expansion of religious tenets, glory for the English Crown, search for possible trade routes to Asia and circumnavigation, and for many, just the thirst for adventure and to get away from crowded and corrupt ol’ Europe. The region collectively known as Appalachia then as now, was a difficult place to get around in. Settlements and fledgling communities were isolated and self-sufficient. The people had to grow their own food, build their own dwellings, hunt their own meat and provide their own entertainment when a hard day’s work was done. Still, this pioneer stock was made of stern stuff, and, fueled by their religious faith and a strong work ethic, over the years, the area was settled and somewhat tamed, as it is today.

Carter's parents, A.P. and Sara Carter, founded the Carter Family as a trio in 1926, along with A.P.'s sister-in-law Maybelle. During the next 17 years they recorded some 300 old-time ballads, traditional tunes, country songs, and Gospel hymns, all representatives of America's southern folklore and heritage. They operated out of their homes in the Clinch Mountain area of Virginia until 1938. The next few years they toured Texas and the various southern neighbors until they disbanded in 1943. Maybelle Carter, who has been called the "Queen of Country Music," continued the tradition and her career with her three daughters, Anita, Helen, and June who is married to Johnny Cash. Enough of their recordings remained in the vaults to keep the group current through the '40s. Their influence was evident through further generations of musicians, in all forms of popular music, until the end of the century.
