The Carter Family made their first recordings for Ralph Peer on the Victor label in 1927, in Bristol, Tennessee. During the next 17 years they recorded some 300 old-time ballads, traditional tunes, country songs, and Gospel hymns, all representative of America's southeastern folklore and heritage. The original Family consisted of Mother Maybelle Addington Carter (1909-1979), who played guitar and sang harmony; Sara Dougherty (1898-1979), who played autoharp and sang alto lead; and Sara’s husband, Alvin Pleasant (A.P.) Carter (d.1960), who played fiddle and sang bass. - Arnold Shaw - American Dictionary of Pop/Rock Brief biography of the Carter Family with some song clips. Video clip from the 1950's of Maybelle's daughters June, Helen, and Anita who carried on the legacy for more than two decades after the original Carter's left the studio. One of the most influential groups in country music was The carter family (A.P., Sara, cousin Maybelle, and others). The carters first recorded for Ralph
    http://www.roughstock.com/history/begin.html
Although musicians had been recording fiddle tunes (known as Old Time Music at that time) in the southern Appalachians for several years, It wasn't until August 1, 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee, that Country Music really began. There, on that day, Ralph Peer signed Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family to recording contracts for Victor Records.
These two recording acts set the tone for those to follow - Rodgers with his unique singing style and the Carters with their extensive recordings of old-time music.
Known as the "Father of Country Music," James Charles Rodgers was born in Meridian, Mississippi on September 8, 1897. Always in ill health, he became a railroad hand, until ill health caught up with him and he was forced to seek a less strenuous occupation. An amateur entertainer for many years, he became a serious performer in 1925, appearing in Johnson City, Tennessee and other places. In 1926, Rodgers and Carrie, his wife of 6 years, moved to Asheville, North Carolina, and organized the Jimmie Rodgers' Entertainers, a hillbilly band comprising Jack Pierce (guitar), Jack Grant (mandolin/banjo), Claude Grant (banjo), and Rodgers himself (banjo).
Upon hearing that Ralph Peer of Victor Records was setting up a portable recording studio in Bristol, on the Virginia-Tennessee border, the Entertainers headed in that direction. But due to a dispute within their ranks, Rodgers eventually recorded as a solo artist, selecting a sentimental ballad, "The Soldier's Sweetheart," and a lullaby, "Sleep, Baby, Sleep," as his first offerings. The record met with instant acclaim, thus causing Victor to record further Rodgers' sides throughout 1927, including the first in a set of 13, Blue Yodel # 1 (T for Texas)

Their music had a profound impact on bluegrass country southern gospel pop and rock musicians , as well as on the U.S. folk revival of the 1960s. They were the first vocal group to become country music stars. Such songs as "Wabash Cannonball," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," "Wildwood Flower" and "Keep On the Sunny Side" became country standards. The original group consisted of Alvin Pleasant "A.P." Delaney Carter , his wife Sara Dougherty Carter , and his sister-in-law Maybelle Addington Carter . Maybelle was married to A.P.'s brother Ezra (Eck) Carter, and was also Sara's first cousin. All three were born and raised in southwestern Virginia where they were immersed in the tight harmonies of mountain gospel music and shape note singing. Maybelle's distinctive and innovative guitar playing style became a hallmark of the group.

Dr. Brinkley had built the most powerful radio station in the world, 500,000 watt XERA, and blanketed North America with sales pitches for snake oils and his quack remedies. A Chicago company, Consolidated Royal Chemical, also used XERA airwaves to sell patent medicines, and featured the best in country music entertainment Anita's mother, Maybelle, her uncle, A. P., and her aunt, Sara: the Carter Family. One day, Maybelle told little Anita to sing her favorite song into the microphone, the one about the "purty liddle kitty kat" that wore "a great big cowboy hat." The show's producers were ecstatic! That cute little girl had the Carter gift, they said. Were there any more at home like her? Why, yes, Maybelle said. There were her two daughters, Helen and June, and there was A. P. and Sara's daughter, Janette. For the next three years, two generations of Carters sang to an audience spanning the continent, and a generation of budding country stars got a musical education that shaped them forever.

The Carter family: pioneer country music singers
When the Carter Family made their first country music recordings for Victor Records, in 1927, they created a musical style that persists to this day.
Nestled in the shadow of Clinch Mountain, in the crossroads hamlet of Maces Spring, Virginia, sits one of the most rustic concert theaters in the world. It is made of rough-cut lumber with sides that swing open on hinges to admit summer breezes. In winter, the entire building is heated by wood and coal-fed iron stoves. The seating is a medley of old chairs taken from abandoned theaters, and discarded church pews. Carpeting consists of remnants and sample squares, in an infinite variety of colors and designs. It looks like the entire building was thrown together from a jumble of second thoughts. Beside the theater is a tiny white clapboard building surrounded by spreading trees. Inside are stacks of ancient 78 rpm phonograph records, thousands of faded pictures and dozens of dogeared scrapbooks. Clothing is sealed behind glass wall cases the expensive dress worn by June Carter Cash on a visit to Jimmy Carter’s White House and a dress suit worn by her husband, Johnny, on the same night. In stark contrast is a pair of ragged britches with broken suspenders that are attached to the waistband with a rusty nail. The little museum was once a general store and it’s proprietor was one of the true legends of country music A.P. Carter. He opened his business in the 1940s simply because he wanted something to do. A.P. was also the threadbare owner of the pants with the broken suspenders.

The 1st Annual Ola Belle Reed Homecoming Festival is an opportunity to celebrate the life and music of this remarkable woman in the locale where her life's journey began, the small community of Lansing in the mountains of North Carolina. August 18 -20, 2006 For more information contact: olabellefest@gmail.com The information gathered on this website will not be used to send unsolicited email and will not be sold to a 3rd party. The Rest of the Story: Country Music Roots Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? is the first major biography of the Carter Family, the musical pioneers who almost single-handedly created the sounds and traditions that grew into modern folk, country, and bluegrass music. Meticulously researched and lovingly written, it is a look at a world and a culture that, rather than passing, has continued to exist in the music that is the legacy of the Carters songs that have shaped and influenced generations of artists who have followed them. Brilliant in insight and execution, Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone? is also an in-depth study of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle Carter, and their bittersweet story of love and fulfillment, sadness and loss. The result is more than just a biography of a family; it is also a journey into another time, almost another world, and theirs is a story that resonates today and lives on in the timeless music they created.

A.P. Carter is born in Poor Valley (known now as Maces Springs), Virginia, the first of eight children of Robert and Mollie Bays Carter. Nearly struck by lightning during her pregnancy, Mollie forever after will ascribe A.P.'s tremor, and the quaver for which his singing will become known, to that near miss. Ralph Peer is born in Independence, Missouri, the son of a furniture retailer. After serving in the navy in World War I , Peer goes to work first for the General Phonograph Company and later for the Victor Company, in whose service he eventually discovers the Carter family. July 21: Sara Dougherty is born in Wise County, Virginia, to Sevier and Elizabeth Kilgore Dougherty. Sara's mother will die when Sara is three years old, and her father leads a nomadic existence, traveling around staying with relatives. Sara will be left with her uncle and aunt, Milburn and Melinda Nickels, in Copper Creek, Virginia, over the mountain from the Carters' ancestral home in Poor Valley.
