Of Italian, Welsh and Irish ancentry, even as a child she possessed a beauty that often required a double-take. As a teenager, Gia worked in her father, Joe's, sandwich shop, Hoagie City. She had a bit of a wild streak; often frequenting popular dance clubs while still underage, and experimenting with drugs and relationships. But by the age of 18, Gia was in New York City, gracing the covers of the worlds top fashion magazines. In a world of aspiring models and infinite beauty - Gia was different. "There's only been maybe three girls in my whole career that have walked into my studio and I went, "Wow!" Gia was the last who came in here and I said "Wow!"" This from world renowned fashion photographer, Francesco Scavullo. And Gia continued to WOW the masses! By the end of 1978 she had taken the fashion world by storm. Gia made the rounds with other model friends, including supermodel Janice Dickinson, to the big city hot spots - Studio 54, The Mudd Club. "We loved it!" Janice Dickinson recalled. "It was a place for us. A place where we could be with the beautiful, do drugs, be out of our minds and it all seemed normal." But what was normal to Gia? Or to any other model of the day? Kelly LeBrock remembers, "Gia, when I was working with her, was still sort of in the beginning, still very fresh and lovely, I think drowning a little bit in her own success, but not anymore screwed up than anybody else was in the set."
