21. It's A Wonderful Life: Frank Capra's Dark Side - Interesting Ideas
Looked at in context, frank capra s It s A Wonderful Life is not the feelgood movie it s made out to be.
http://www.interestingideas.com/ii/capra.htm
It's a pretty grim life, actually
All is not so rosey in It's A Wonderful Life
When Frank Capra died, it was inevitable that It's a Wonderful Life would be trotted out to demonstrate his life-affirming, joyous love of people. The film is It's a Wonderful Life would not have been in the public domain for so many years and thus would not have become, during the '80s, as omnipresent as Christmas carols and shopping days til Xmas. Granted, it might have joined Miracle on 34th St. and Christmas Carol as beloved, but once a year, holiday movie traditions. But because TV stations were able for so long to repeat it at no cost, it became a Christmas classic ad nauseum Yet reading It's a Wonderful Life as wholesomely heart-warming takes uncritically the notion that it celebrates the triumph of small-town sweetness over impersonal modernity. Far from being the feel-good movie of 1947, It's a Wonderful Life is in fact one of Capra's most relentlessly depressing works. The film's framing story indeed draws on the backward-looking myth of the small town favored by Hollywood's not-notably rural filmmakers. But as with the Wizard of Oz This picture of the corruption and the death of small-town society is equaled in film only by Orson Welles' Magnificent Ambersons , a movie given big head start by novelist Booth Tarkington, who specialized in chronicling the corrosive effects of modernization.

EUE/Screen Gems Studios-North Carolina In 1983, while on a location shoot, Frank Capra, Jr. fell in love. He fell in love with Wilmington, N.C. Its comfortable weather, beautiful countryside and warm people were more than enough to entice him to stay. The result was the creation of what is today the largest motion picture studio east of Hollywood. As President of EUE/Screen Gems Studios North Carolina, Frank takes an active role in every project including becoming an active member of the thriving film community he helped to establish. He started a Film Studies program and teaches classes at the University of N.C.-Wilmington. He has also opened the studios to the public by offering tours. He sits on numerous boards, including the Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, the National Board of the Directors Guild of America and the North Carolina Governor's Film Council. True, he's the son of one of Hollywood's best known movie directors, but Frank has placed his own mark on the world as well. His love for his chosen career spans more than four decades, and his accomplishment stretch as far back as 1956 when he served as the second Assistant Director on Dennis the Menace. His work spans television, TV movies and feature film including wide screen and IMAX formats. A short list of major projects include: Gunsmoke, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Escape from New York, Firestarter, and Executive Producer of Death Before Dishonor.

Meet John Doe (1941) is Frank Capra's wonderful, message-laden populist melodramatic tale about the common man. The sentimental, hard-hitting film is often grouped into a populist trilogy of Capra films about American individualism - associated with Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939) , although it is generally considered the weakest of the three. The socially-conscious film was Capra's first independent film production - and a departure from his traditional, twelve year association with Columbia Studios and tyrannical studio head Harry Cohn during the 30s. It was much more serious than his previous 'Capra-corn' comedic efforts, such as It Happened One Night (1934) and You Can't Take It With You (1938) The screenplay, written by screenwriter Robert Riskin, was derived from a 1939 film treatment, titled

CONTACT PUBLISHER: Another Frank Capra offers a new interpretation of the great hollywood director beyond the patriotic sentimentalist or the cynical opportunist that he has been taken for. Often cast as a cinematic simpleton or primitive, Capra's exploitation of the stylistic and narrative resources of cinema was, in fact, extremely self-conscious and adventurous in ways typical of artistic modernism. His modernism is also evident in his repeated and strong identification with female characters. Informed by recent work in genre theory and feminist psychology, Another Frank Capra shows Capra to be a "proto-feminist" director whose feminism has been entirely neglected by previous critics. Why It Hurts to Watch Frank Capra's It's a Wonderful Life
    By Vince Nobile
Mr. Nobile is Professor of History, Chaffey College. In a matter of weeks, Americans will engage in the Christmas ritual of visiting Bedford Falls, U.S.A., home to George and Mary Bailey, Uncle Billy, Bert and Ernie, Violet Bicks, and mean Henry Potter. It's the time of year for everyone's favorite holiday rerun, Frank Capra's 1946 classic, It's a Wonderful Life . Americans have been watching this film for more than half a century, but have long ago abandoned its message. In his time, Frank Capra was a persistent advocate for core cultural values. Today, conservatives and new Democrats alike bemoan the absence of core values, though I doubt they want to adopt those of Bedford Falls. It’s A Wonderful Life George Bailey is Capra's consummate peoples' hero using his money and his business only as a way of helping family, friends, and community. Herein lie the essence of Capra's Americanism and his model for generating a wonderful lifea people's capitalism. Such a capitalism exists when one's commitment to giving takes priority over self; when the well being of the self is rooted in the well being of the community, and when the profit motive is employed to meet societal needs, rather than stock dividends. Like many Depression era Americans, Capra had little faith left in the promises of laissez-faire (i.e., the pursuit of self-interest as parent to the common good). What is good for Potter is emphatically not good for Bedford Falls.

Encyclopedia of World Biography on Frank Capra Filmmaker Frank Capra (1897-1991) was 1930s Hollywood's top director, creating several immensely popular movies that captured the mood of the Depression-era United States and earning more Academy Award nominations than any of his contemporaries. "Capracorn" is the term some use to describe Frank Capra's style of movie-making, but even if his films feel too sentimental to many critics and moviegoers, there is no denying the mastery he had of the film medium or that he developed a style uniquely his own. In the 1930s, he was the top director in Hollywood, turning out a series of films that touched the hopes and fears of the nation as it struggled through the Great Depression and, in the process, Capra garnered more Oscar nominations for himself and his pictures than any other filmmaker of the decade.

Instead of being flown to Shanghai, the DC 2 continues east into the mountains beyond Tibet where it runs out of fuel and crashes in the snowy mountain coll of an unknown Himalayan range. The mysterious hijacker dies in the cockpit, the passengers survive... but what could their fate be other than a frozen, anonymous death? Out of the dead light of the endless snow a party of rescuers materialize, led by the enigmatic Chang, who, it appears, has been expecting them. Explanations are left for another time. The five passengers are roped together like slaves and led across the treacherous mountain precipices to a cave, which opens like a dream onto the verdant valley country of Shangri-La. In fact, as the five are led to the "Lamasery" a chic modernist villa straight off the drawing board of a Frank Lloyd Wright, situated high in the mountains above the Valley of the Blue Moon and the reason for their kidnapping is slowly revealed, one might be excused for thinking that these characters were actually killed in the plane crash and that Shangri-La is to be their version of heaven. The idealism of James Hilton's story is yet another in the tradition of closed utopian societies, although the underlying despair of its bourgeois Buddhism is very much a symptom of the 1930s. World economic Depression, the rise of Fascism, technological warfare, ethnic persecution, the rejection of "benign" colonialism and the Christian ethic, were reasons for anxiety among liberals in the western democracies... an anxiety that

Capra was born in Bisacquino, Sicily, on May 18, 1897, and immigrated to the United States when he was five. He earned an engineering degree at the California Instuitute of Techology in 1918 (then known as Throop College of Technology) and then began a long and successful film career . Frank Capra—Independent Profile
The Rise of the Producer-Directors in Classic Hollywood Excerpt from Hollywood Renegades by J. A. Aberdeen Perhaps the most significant challenge to the studio system was the rise of the producer-director. In contrast to the considerable authority of the pre-Hollywood era film directors like D. W. Griffith and Thomas Ince, most of the directors at the major studios in the 1920s and 1930s were reduced to hired-hands. The studio system by its very nature had compartmentalized and restricted the role of the director, and concentrated the creative power in the hands of the film executives who oversaw production from script to editing. As the studio system itself was strained by the economic chaos of the early 1930s, some directors demanded, and received, greater creative freedom at the studios. Directors who had a strong artistic vision, but who also were commercially reliable, worked their way out of mere contract-director status, to head their own semi-autonomous units at the major studios—Frank Capra, John Ford Howard Hawks , Gregory La Cava, Ernst Lubitsch, Leo McCarey , Mervyn Le Roy, Tay Garnett, William Wellman, and Cecil B. DeMille. As producer-directors, their work seemed to show a continuity of style, and allowed their films to transcend the studio assembly-line.
