A Tribute To Frank Capra
Very few directors have had words coined from their names to describe their style. "Hitchcockian" comes to mind. And, of course, "Capra-esque." Frank Capra's was a style and an approach to filmmaking that no others have consistently been able to emulate. Many of his stories, in other hands, would have been slapstick or maudlin or both. Attempts have certainly been made, about which the less said, the better. Born in Italy on May 18, 1897, he came to America at the age of six, in steerage, the son of a fruit picker. After graduating from college with an engineering degree and serving in the military, he began his Hollywood career as a gag writer for Hal Roach and Mack Sennett, then became a writer and director for comedian Harry Langdon. Eventually he landed at Columbia Studios, and there began the work that would eventually land him among the greatest directors of all time.

What emerges from these interviews and film clips is an illuminating, if mostly uncritical, portrait of a tragically conflicted personality whose work, more than that of many directors, is barely veiled autobiography. The Capra seen here joins his fictional counterparts — Mr. Deeds, Mr. Smith, and John Doe — as an Everyman whose sudden wealth and fame, those driving myths of the "American Dream" that was Capra’s eternal subject, nearly destroy him. Capra never quite believed in his own accomplishments, and in his Catholic way seemed to suffer most when he was most praised. After a record critical and commercial success with

He sold newspapers, graduated from Manual Arts High School, worked his way through college and graduated 1918 with a degree in chemical engineering. He joined the Army in World War I and taught math to artillery officers. His first big film success was The Strong Man starring Harry Langdon in 1926. He signed a contract with the small "Poverty Row" studio Columbia Pictures led by Harry Cohn and Sam Briskin, and made That Certain Thing and Columbia's first sound picture The Submarine in 1928: "Everybody in Hollywood was scared to death of sound but I knew all about sound waves from freshman physics." He married Lucille Reyburn in 1932 and made American Madness with script by Robert Riskin about a banker played by Walter Huston who made loans based on people's character but who is ruined by the Depression until the people rally behind him to save the bank (the same plot as the 1946 film It's a Wonderful Life Capra joined the Academy and sought to make an "arty" film that would earn him an Academy award, made the

Introduction Next JMMH O n January 9, 1999, during the annual American Historical Association (AHA) meeting in Washington DC, The Popular Culture Association, , and the AHA co-sponsored a conference session on the films and legacy of Frank Capra. The session was titled "Frank Capra's Populism: Timebound or Timeless?" Capra's films have made an indelible impact on 20th-century America, serving as both commentaries on and artifacts of American culture. Few historians are more able and competent to analyze them than Robert Brent Toplin, Lawrence Levine, and Dan T. Carter. We obtained permission from all three to tape their presentations and to utilize their talks in The JMMH this was the one we wanted to showcase. Those who later heard our recordings heartily agreed with us. W e are especially proud of this piece, not only because of the high quality of the talks, but because re -presenting the Capra joint session in an enhanced multimedia format, including film excerpts, demonstrates clearly the unique opportunities hypermedia provides for the scholarly analysis and review of non-textual material. P lease note that we have transcribed the presentations as they were delivered have added, wherever possible and with the presenters' cooperation, brief reference notes placed
