Several Accidentals went together to see her in the play, and were knocked out by her performance. But don't take our word for it. Listen to reviewer Clive Barnes, in the New York Post, Feb. 18, 2003: "As the new Roxie Hart, Belle Calaway is outrageously confident, tough but also pixie-cute, resembing that wondrous and very first Roxie, Gwen Verdon." Another reviewer, Steve Callahan, wrote, "Belle Calaway plays Roxie, and she delivers the goods. Cute, sexy, energetic, she's perfect for the role." Belle Calaway

First, the not-so-good news. Musical Theatre West's production of Anything Goes has an orchestra that is too small for the space (I counted only eight musicians), and it suffers from the usual amplification problems that seem to plague the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. This is not the first time the audience has had to listen to a buzzing amplified silence between the actors' lines, and the lack of subtlety in the amplification makes everything sound more like a recording than live theatre. The better news is that these problems don't really matter. Once you get past the somewhat thin-sounding overture and adjust yourself to the audible distance between yourself and the performers, you're in for a fun time. Heading the production are Belle Calaway as nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and Kevin Earley as her pal Billy Crocker. In their first scene together, Reno complains that Billy has never made a pass at her, but Calaway plays it for fun - it's clear that this Reno has absolutely no romantic interest in this Billy, she's just joshin' around with her good friend. Having established their playful relationship from the start, Calaway and Earley are adorable as they flirt their way through "You're the Top." Calaway's voice is not delicate or elegant; she's an old-school belter and the power is there when she needs it. Character-wise, Reno's friendship and general amiability come through no matter who she is singing with, and Calaway also has a surprising vulnerability which is apparent as soon as she crosses paths with her real love interest in the piece.

'Chicago' dances into Detroit with luscious ladies and all that jazz
    By Bryan Lark
Daily Arts Writer "C'mon babe, why don't we paint the town ... and all that jazz," croons a luscious lady in black as nearly a dozen equally sexy dancers in black writhe and gyrate their way through a jaw-dropping, toe-tapping, hip-shaking opening number. This, boys and girls, is not your parents' Broadway musical. Actually, "Chicago," now painting the town black, white and blood red at Detroit's Fisher Theater, is your parents' Broadway musical. Originally produced in the late '60s, John Kander and Fred Ebb's masterpiece of murder, malice, mayhem and music is currently enjoying a full-scale revival that began on Broadway in 1996 and has spread its merry mayhem around the country in a slow, slinky fashion worthy of Bob Fosse's sensual choreography. Music and fashion are the passion of the new "Chicago," presented in a no-frills style that puts all the characters in revealing black attire, puts the orchestra on the stage, puts no props in people's hands (save a few bar chairs and several newspapers) and puts the audience in a beautiful, corrupt, hilarious world of jazz and liquor, blood and guts and fame and fortune. In this world of the late '20s' Windy City, we meet Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, played by Belle Calaway and Stephanie Pope respectively, two lovely, fun-lovin' women who have dreams of careers in vaudeville and all-around celebrity - attainable dreams if only they can beat their pesky murder raps.

Meredith Patterson; still in her 20s, was plucked from the chorus to be Peggy Sawyer, the starry-eyed ingenue, after Kate Levering left 42nd Street. And Calaway, at 52, was temporarily promoted from standing by for the role of Roxie Hart to playing it when Chicago found itself between stars.

Underclassmen take a trip to the Big Apple to see "Chicago" starring Melanie Griffith
    By Ashley Pavlic
    Princetonian Arts Writer
For most Princeton students, coming to New York to see a show on Broadway is a special treat. Of course, one's excitement on the bus ride there is usually tempered by onerous physics or math books resting on the student's lap, but upon arrival, all of that is left on the bus.
A busload from Mathey and Rocky Colleges disembarked in front of the Ambassador Theatre at around 7:15 p.m., giving the students 45 minutes to relax before the show started. Some walked the few blocks to Times Square, where they spent the next 20 minutes in a trance-like state of raised eyes and open mouths.
"We are such tourists," they laughed as they returned to the theater.
In the "Chicago" playbill, there were several inserts alerting patrons that different cast members would be playing several of the leading roles. "Great," some students thought, "We must have gotten the understudy performance. Well, for the $20 it cost to come . . ." But all were in for a pleasant surprise.
